Comics Continuum is showing that Foundations is scheduled for release on Aug. 4th and reprints 25-30 and part of the 2003 Legion Secret Files. 176 pages in all at a $20 price tag.

I'm torn between my love (and support) for all things Legion and my disdain for bad stories. If this would have even been a marginal story I'd probably get it, but I'm really having a tough time deciding to pick it up since I...

A. already have the individual issues.

and

B. even at 176 pages, it would only take about ten minutes to read the entire book with comprehension in mind.

I just don't know... maybe it's a good birthday list item?

I'm not buying the TPB because of your point "A". When I already have the individual issues, I won't buy the TPB, unless the TPB or hardcover has dramatically better paper quality than the issues I own (i.e. Legion Archives).

Once again: A.

I have the issues. I didn't much like them the first time 'round. Why would having them in another format change that?

Clever fellow that I am, I didn't buy all of the individual issues! So I am definately considering the possibility of maybe picking this up, if only for the pretty artwork.

It was barely good enough to buy individually. I see no reason to buy the trade.

I'd much rather see a new archive edition come out. I never read the death of Chemical King issue.
Also, wouldn't the LightningLad/SaturnGirl Digest and the 1st apperance of Dawnstar be in vol.13?

People here have been screaming for a trade paperback for years, and now no one's going to buy it?

Isn't the fact that DC is finally going to put out a trade a good sign that the LSH is still going to be in publication? I mean, why bother collecting a canceled series?

Well, for me the answer is money is tight so i won't be getting them, i already have them, and an additional one or five typewritten pages, if included, isn't enough to get me to buy.

And honestly, i only have one tpb so far, Crisis on Multiple Earths II. I plan to get one and three when i can.

It's Legion, therefore I'm buying it!

Hmm, something to consider, though, poor sales of the Trade may indicate to the higher-ups that nobody wanted to buy/read Legion anymore. (Not saying it's the truth, just that it may tend to indicate that attitude to the suits...)

Sure we wanted a trade paperback: of a better story. It's just too bad that DC never collected any of DnA's better work. Foundations was far from their best effort, in my opinion.

I won't buy a TPB just because it's from a series I collect.

You should buy it for it's magnificent coloring;) And I need to buy it because I never got a copy of #27, even though I worked on the damn thing. Can't find a copy at any of my local stores either; that Superboy cover must have been a big seller or something. wink

Ronda, e-mail or PM and I'll be glad to send you a copy. I always have at least one extra. I usually buy two or three copies so I can send one to a friend in Peru. I know I have an extra of #27 and I'll gladly mail it to you.

(You're the man, LL.)

To answer the question, no. For reason A. Plus the small fact that I didn't think the story was particularly good.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't buy any Legion trades of anything recent. When I bought the Great Darkness trade and Beginning of Tomorrow, it was purely to get a friend up to speed on the Legion for a Mutants and Masterminds campaign (which never ended up running, alas). I own Legion issues in a continuous run from the present back to Superboy #200 from the early '70s. I don't even want to spend the money on archives past volume 9.

That said, The last five years of the book have obviously been written with later compilation in mind. Most stories have been four to six issues long. And I think that trades are a great way to get people into a book. From a sheer sales perspective, they're a good tool for introducing new readers. My local comic shop has hooked me into at least half a dozen series in the last couple of years using that strategy. If DC really wants to up the numbers on Legion, print some trades of some good lead-in material. Not many existing Legion fans will buy them, but you'll be creating new ones for the monthly.

We've already seen such behavior regarding things Legion. When the beautifully sculpted but abysmally articulated "action" figures of the founders were released, they sold, well... abysmally. smile Instead of realizing THEY made a mistake in reading what their buyers actually want, DC Corporate decided Legion figures won't sell. The resulting continuing figures are just different head sculpts on cookie-cutter bodies, the main reason we haven't seen the girls come out yet... They're trying to exhaust the male roster with the molds they have.

So yes, low sales on the Foundations TPB would just confirm what DC already "knows"... Legion won't sell. Freaking Catch-22 for us, and STOOpid on DC's part. frown

As much as I loved the art, not only do I already have the issues, but money is tight and I'm not gonna spend what little I have on something I don't particularly like, much less need.

I rarely buy TPBs, unless they are of a mini series such as Proposition Player, as I find the fact that they are part of a larger story frustrating. I read a JSA story recently (thanks to my local library) which left me thinking Eh what happened, where are they going with that?

But by the same token, Far, I wish I HAD waited for the trade of David Mack's recent Daredevil run. I don't read DD regularly any longer, what with Bendis' interminable run-on story-arcs... but I ended up buying 51 thru 55 and reading them all in one sitting. Exactly what TPB's are good for! shake Silly Pov... wink

I prefer to have TPB, they are easier to store and read. I'm not much for collecting, just reading the tales. EDE, I can send you my copies of the individual issues if ya want 'em.

Just spouting off.

I'll have to second Arachne. Just how many of you will break down when you see it in the store? (If you see it, as a lot of these books are apparently printed to conform to advance orders.)

You'll keep saying that "Foundations" was a weak story, not DnA's best, blah blah, and then you'll suddenly turn around and emote with delight, once you can hold one in your hand, "A Legion trade! Don'tcaregottahavethis" in your best XS imitative manner.

Come on. Aaaaaaaaadmit it.

Me? I want to get that discount copy of the Ross art book "Mythology" that Scott is picking up. So I'm immune wink

I didn't want a Foundtions TPB. I'll buy it if they include something that wasn't in the individual issues--like a formal apology for Jarth.
