CALLING THE ROLL is a character-by-character look at the latest issue of the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES.

Let the roll be called!

CosmicBoy3 COSMIC BOY : I'm guessing Rokk spent his vacation on Braal. Wonder how his dad is?

127,000 members... open election... I think we all know where this is going. No matter who gets elected, I think Cosmic Boy will be to this legion as he was to the previous one (perhaps not the ones before that)- the Leader behind/over/through the elected leader. We haven't seen enough of him leading the *team* as he does in this issue. Makes it a lot easier to respect him.

Since the 'revelation' in last issue's letter column sequence, I can't help wondering about how Cos is reacting to everyone he appears with in a panel.

ColossalBoy3 COLOSSAL BOY : I particularly like the Cos/Gim sequence. Good to see the big boy's got a brain-- or at least some cunning. His advice to Cos made sense to me.

I was worried there for a minute when Gim took on the Dominator thingie head on-- only to have his flight ring go on the blink. Whew- there he is rubbing his aching head while Cos welcomes Supergirl.

KARATE KID : "Who was the first to test that theory?" K-Kid hasn't been in *space* yet???!!! I find that hard to swallow. Invisible Kid, I would've bought.

Aren't the Legionnaires getting any sort of training at all?

ELEMENT LAD: He's not touching that hull he's turning to whatever gas he's turning it into. Later, he *is* touching Gim's flight ring as he tries to 'fix it' (how, exactly?), only to discover that it's "too complex an alloy". Too bad Brainy wasn't around to whisper into his ear, like on Naltor.

Supergirl3 SUPERGIRL : Looks great, but it's way to early to tell much about her. The 'dream' comment is quite a hook for next issue, but it, too, doesn't tell us enough for us to judge much about what she actually is saying. Won't stop us, though.

Hmmm. Since Phantom Girl's the history maven, shouldn't she have been the one to first speak to Supergirl? Or at least been beside Cos to advise him?

Hmmmm. Hmmmmm. Just how did the Legionnaires get into space to await the Dominator thing? Did they fly up? Transmat?

Hmmm. Hmmmm. Hmmmm. Was that a new style Dominator with a yellowish dot on his forehead in the Cos/Gim scene?

At heart, the peoples lives are dull and boring and while the guy was harrassed, he stood up for himself and established that it was right to FIGHT BACK against what he felt was wrong. In the end, the Legions WERE acting like punks and they got what they deserved.

Making the man a hero for his fellows.

ULTRA BOY : I agree with others who've thought Jo is the SP plant. He's getting a little over-the-top in his role-playing, if so. The SP HQ scene doesn't make much sense, otherwise. Unless it served only to ignite Cham's mystery-solving instincts.

I went back to check the original solicitation text, which reads "which of the Legionnaires has a secret identity - as a Science Police officer?" So, the possibilities include not only an SP plant in the Legion, but a Legion plant in the SP. If the latter scenario plays out, and Cham's going undercover to suss out why the SP harbor known criminals in their ranks, it sounds like a very promising storyline for him. Jo could still be involved, though.

LIGHTNING LAD and SATURN GIRL : If I were Garth or Imra, I'd be pretty chilled by the words, "You're a resource."

I've had a bad feeling about the Snow Queen all along. Then the other day, I was flipping throught the preview story and lo and behold was reminded of the poster in Lyle's apartment depicting an ugly blonde woman with pointy ears and a jewel on her forehead doing a hocus-pocus thingie, like Universo in drag. The caption read "New Order".

A joke perhaps. If not, there's a threat at least to Garth and Imra personally and maybe something much worse if the Legion's "adoption" was a calculated move rather than a reward.

COLOSSAL BOY : I particularly like the Cos/Gim sequence. Good to see the big boy's got a brain-- or at least some cunning. His advice to Cos made sense to me.

I'm happy that Gim (yes, he's Gim!) isn't being played as a stereotypical big lunkhead. I especially like how he supported Cos while at the same time deftly defending Garth's actions. But Gim was wrong about one thing. People *were* clamoring for a new leader - about half the core team as I recall - and apparently the readers are as well.

ELEMENT LAD: Later, he *is* touching Gim's flight ring as he tries to 'fix it' (how, exactly?), only to discover that it's "too complex an alloy". Too bad Brainy wasn't around to whisper into his ear, like on Naltor.

I figure his failure to save Gim is a pivotal moment that will spur him to "practice" even harder than before. There could be a breakthrough soon.

SUPERGIRL : Looks great, but it's way to early to tell much about her. The 'dream' comment is quite a hook for next issue, but it, too, doesn't tell us enough for us to judge much about what she actually is saying. Won't stop us, though.

It all strikes as very Jungian in its implications of a Multi-Universal collective unconscious expressed in dreams. As for Kara, the panel where she's talking to Cos, looking so iconic (or as Carl Jung would say, archetypical) with her long hair and cape blowing in the wind, made me realize how much I missed her. Welcome back, Supergirl.

We should've seen UB whenever it was he "tore his muscles". All he'd *been* doing was beaming his flash vision at the Dominator thingie.

Did he tear his eye muscles?
He was hanging on to the weapon in that panel. Looks like he tried to physically tear it apart or slow it down after Gim took the hit.

I wonder if it means anything that Brainy's outfit is a palette-swapped SP uniform?

Isn't the weapon Supergirl destroyed the Anti-matter tower that is being used to bring back the multiverse in Infinite Crisis?

It looks just like it. And it would kind of make sense that somehow the climactic battle of IC is what launched her into the future...Maybe her OYL title picks up after spending a year in the 31st century...

Or...

The dream thing...what if DreamBoy is a character who can dream characters into existence? Or from the past into the future? What if he dreamed Kara into the 31st century while she is asleep in the 21st and that's why she thinks she is dreaming? Something else else to think about.

One thing is strange...she seemed to have heard of the Legion, almost like she definitely knew it wasn't supposed to exist...Perhaps this has to do with the ramifications of IC.

I have noticed from looking at the previews that it looks like the post IC universe will remember the Golden Age Batman and Superman(based on up coming JSA covers and History of the DC UNI previews). Perhaps they'll remember the Silver Age as well....and just maybe she knows that the events that were supposed to lead to the formation of the Legion didn't occur...If she is Kara Zor-El with her memory restored than she would know what was supposed to happen...but then again, she probably wouldn't have had to ask where she was or who Cosmic Boy was...
