1071: The Battle of Cassel was fought between Robert I of Flanders (or Robert the Frisian) and his nephew, Arnulf III (son of Baldwin VI of Flanders). The battle was a victory for Robert I of Flanders, Arnulf III was killed in the battle.
Robert became count of Flanders and ruled until 1093. He gained the friendship of King Philip I of France, by offering him the hand in marriage of his stepdaughter, Bertha of Holland.

To catch us up where we should be: 1059 - Pope Nicholas II, with the agreement of the Lateran Council, issues the papal bull In nomine Domini making the College of Cardinals the sole voters in the papal conclave for the election of popes. 1058 - Antipope Benedict X is crowned pope, but later deposed. 1057 - King Macbeth of Scotland is killed in battle against Malcolm III of Scotland.
