This is a thread for those Legion stories that don't seem to fit into any of the standard Legion "archetypes". While certain types of stories tend to be done over and over again, there are those oddball tales that really just don't seem to fit in a category with anything else. There are plenty of variations on the "Invasion" angle. There's only one "Dr. Mayavale"!

So what your favorite unique Legion story?

I really liked the Anti-Lad story back in the old Superboy and the LSH run. It was interesting seeing the legion from the perspective of someone even further in the future than them as well as seeing the classic adventure era legion georgously drawn by Mike Grell.

Anti-Lad? I don't seem to remember him for some strange reason... wink

One story that ranks among my favorites was one of the election issues -- while it was also a Starboy origin tale, the whole thing was Thom just talking to Drake about him and Dream Girl while they watched the election results come in. One of the best "quiet" issues in the series.

The "Dinner with Mordru" issue was also unique with its use of prose panels and the fact that the big confrontation with Mordru was over a dinner of elvabird breast.

I gotta go with LSH # 92 & Legionnaires # 54, which were Time Trapper alternate universe adventures, with Legionnaires as 1950's highschoolers and 1940's golden age heroes respectively.

They were just fun reads especially the goofy conventions of the golden age story. Free Elseworlds without the $6 price!

However the recent Universo fantasies were not to my liking as they really had nothing to do with the story and seemed padding. The Universo Project never wasted issues with sidetracked fantasies.

The Tenzil issue in the TMK series stood out as a joke issue - an intentional joke. It worked for me because it didn't try to be too funny, just wacky. I can't think of any other "comedy" issues.

Don't think you could pull this sort of stunt too often, though. One issue was funny - two would have been tiresome. Tenzil continued to play the clown throughout that series, but only a couple panels at a time.

Hmm, so are you referring to the "Tenzil for the Defense" issue or the one about him and Evillo's daughters? Are you sure two would have been too much? (were those even two separate issues? Suddenly I'm unsure)

You're right, it did go for two issues. I was thinking about Tenzil for the Defense. More gags than the Evillo story, in my opinion, but the Evillo bit was pretty good.

I didn't include the wedding story since it was mixed up with a lot of serious stuff.

Furthermore, I don't think that sort of issue would work in the current series. THe TMK run was already a break from tradition, the comedy fit in. If we had a joke issue now, it would be like going from 120 to 0 in 10 seconds (as in head-on collision. Ouch!).

Of course, and X-Statix/Legion crossover might be worse yet....

The Legion of Substitute Heroes Special was a hoot and a half. Even though it downgraded second-string but entirely capable heroes who didn't deserve it. Let's call it a guilty parody pleasure.

What'd you think of the Brin/Cub issue? It got more serious towards the end, but it was kinda slapstick for the first half. It didn't work for me -- maybe if it had more traditional art it wouldn't have seemed like such a break from the norm.

The all-comedy LSH issues during TMK actually numbered three and a half. Issues 11, 14, 49 and half of 50 were pure Tenzilriffic! And they are my absolute favorites of that run.

Can't say I liked that one so much. The Bonny Baby Adventure ... this is pretty traditional in light literature (I don't think Dostoevsky used it much) and movies, lots of sight gags, baby making a fool of the big tough guy. There were moments... I liked Bard Brunel. The art, I thought, went with the story - it was more cartoony, like the story. Very hard to write humor for everybody, I should think.

I thought the Brin/Cub issue to be one of the weakest of the series, thus far, though I don't believe the idea of inserting humorous issues in the current series is implausible.

I would have to say the "medieval" Legion in vol.4 #4...

I loved that story...

The art was beautiful, the story complex and different. I thought it was a very interesting way to reboot.

And now we can add LEGION # 31 to the list of all-comedy issues, although without the zaniness of Tom & Mary it is less successful than the TMK comedy issues.
