Yeah, I know she was a princess and stuff, but she was the princess on a medieval world!
From what I recall seeing of Orando, it doesn't exactly look like it was a major economic powerhouse in the U.P., so why would its royal family be wealthy?

Well, we can guess it wasn't from Hagga's line of beauty cream...

It's a valid & interesting question.
I figure there must be some kind of CRAZY currency exchange rates in the Legion's time.

It was all an illusion.
No kidding, look at how the European aristocracy was at the turn of the century. Lots of titles, big houses, antiques ... and no cash but always maintaining the appearance of big bucks. So they sponged off wealthy friends or married rich Americans who were thrilled to get the title.
Of course, when Val died, didn't he leave a lot of money which came from the marriage? So there really was something oofy there.
Another possibility is that what wealth Orando had was concentrated in the royal family and the upper reaches of the aristocracy.
Also, King Pharoxx could have been one wicked negotiator over UP access to the planets resources - or he was selling off the jewels and paintings, accumulated over centuries, to U.P. collectors.

Black gold. Texas tea. Or the 30th-31st Century equivalent thereof.

It does present a somewhat different picture of Orando's monarcy when it is supposed to be the case that the planet chooses to remain at the lower level of development while meanwhile its princess lives in luxury, with all the modern conveniences, as soon as she leaves the planet...

Very good question. A medieval society doesn't need too much natural resources, I think. So Orando can sell most of its precious stuff, as long as the U.P. can use it without ruining the environment, and the royalty gets quite some money. It explains why Orando is still medieval: should it grow, it couldn't sell enough to the U.P.
