Personally, I don't have much attachment to the postboot Legion at all except for a few characters who didn't exist preboot. They never felt like the Legion to me.

That said, relurking is not allowed (as was already told to you). There just aren't enough Durlans around here - as far as we know, anyway.

Having read the 7-page preview, and just reread Adventure 359/360 The Outlawed Legionnaires & The Legion Chain Gang, I'm struck by the similar feel of the two stories . . . with the Legion standing up to the authorities, in '67 under the influence of Universo, and in the preview rebelling against the Utopian aura, which seems hides a darker core. I like to think nu-Lyle may develop into the kind of legionnaire who could lead the Legion through the crisis the '67 Legion faced ... should make interesting reading.

Cham55, that's a great observation! There are lots of similarities between what we've seen of the new series and that Adventure two-parter. Interestingly, Lyle's parents appear in both as staunch supporters of the "system". In the Adventure tale, they even go so far as to bug his communications!

As you say, that was one of the best stories of the Adventure era and one of my favorites. IF Mark & Barry have used that as inspiration for the upcoming series, they couldn't have picked a better paltform to launch from.

And now that I think of it, that sinister looking sentinent with the monocle on the cover of issue #2 could easily be a "reimaged" Universo. laugh

Cham55,

I join the chorus in applauding your delurking (I delurked myself a few months ago).

The Outlawed Legionnaires/Legion Chain-Gang is probably my favorite story from the Adventure era. It had a real sense of danger, of the world gone crazy, it had a James Bond-like chase/climax, it had youth rebellion, it utilized a majority (plurality?) of Legionnaires and showcased each one's powers and personality, it highlighted the Legionnaires as kids dealing with intergenerational conflict, mirroring the conflict between Universo and Rond Vidar.

I agree that this story seems to have a strong influence on the new book.

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I've always loved the Outlaw Legion stories, up to and including the "Universo Project".

I've never read the Outlaw Legion, but everything I've heard about it is good.

In a wave of nostalgia I decided to revisit the Adventure era. It seems Invisible Kid may have indeed been a bit of a rebel even then. He even cheeked Nardo when caught trying to escape ... kids today, what can you do with them?

If I have one regret about the adventure era, it is that stories were rarely followed through. Consequences of Legion actions were distinct to each episode ... that is one of the improvements later incarnations achieved ... cause and effect were reflected in later issues.

The latest Legion seems full of promise. I like the apparent age difference (whether in real years or achieved maturity) within the group. It allows for conflict, but also opens up the possibility of a familial feeling within the Legion, replacing lost family ties, when rebeling against "grounding" (btw ... been there done that got the grumpy teenage son to prove it!).

The Utopian universe reminds me of 19th Century Britain (I'm not that old ... I studied history) on the surface it was an age of wealth, contentment and confidence. Under the surface, there was poverty, depression, exploitation etc etc ... there was something there to be rebeled against.

That age also spawned great social change and immmense reformers, whose work impacts on society today ... in UK terms, penal reform, universal sufferage, civil rights .... the Legion could be crusaders for civil rights in the 31st Century.

Sidebar: I can only speak for UK ... Rest of the World needs to find a similar time in own development.

I've read some despondency among fans of the reboot era saying the new Legion won't be "their Legion". No argument. It's true. But with 13months to go to my half century, I've seen change aplenty (and in other groups, too) and I always find something I can identify with, a kernal which I carry from one incarnation to the next. For me Lyle is already showing the promise of that link ... I await December with baited breath (and a great desire to see the extended edition of Return of the King to keep me busy till then).

Long Live Your Legion ... its only a thought away!!!

Good thoughts about the Outlaw Legion - that was a powerful story! It would be interesting to learn if Waid was consciously following that and, if so, for what reasons - good story, homage to his favourite Adventure-era tale? - perhaps once the new issue comes out, we can get an answer to that question.

Just thought I would weigh in here. Thanks Barry for the great artwork. The girls/women look beautiful and gosh does Lightning Lad look hot! I don't like Element Lad's costume or look but I am so glad he's alive I will take anything.

I am a big fan of the 70s and 80s Legions stories and this shout out to their costumes is appreciated. I am intrigued with the premise here and am anxiously awaiting the first issue.

Things are about to get very interesting...

I agree with you that LL looks awesome. As for E-Lad's costume, there are certain, er, elements to it that make sense given the bits in Barry's sketches about him. I'm not overly fond of capes in general but I think I'll adjust.

And in case you wonder why Barry doesn't respond, I'll say that he's in Dallas at the WizardWorld convention.

I love the look of most of the new costumes except....Triplicate Girl's! All of the other women seem to have much more provocative (read: shows some skin) outfits. With peek-a-boo shoulders or mid-driffs. Lu is covered from head to toe - and is wearing gloves and a cape on top of it!! Lu is a nice girl - but she's not a prude. Maybe when she tripicates, one gets the cape, one gets the top and one gets the bottoms.

Saturn Girl's costume is the same as always. Maybe it would've been nice if she wore the bikini (which is my favorite). I think Lu's cape looks a bit large, but less so in some of Barry's sketches.

Hi Guys
Thanks as always for the kind words!

Hopefully the costumes you have doubts about will grow on you (keeping my fingers crossed) when you've had a little more chance to see them 'in action'.

smile

Cheers

I just want to go on record saying that I think that the mystery boots belong to none other than...

NEMESIS KID!

Remember, you heard it here first! (Or did you? I haven't read many of the back pages...)

I hope those feet belong to a girl, a supergirl misplaced in time and space. Kara Zorel. Leave Power Girl in the 21st and Kara in the 31st to have a relationship with Brainy. scott
