Hi Legion Lovers,

Here is a list of artists that should have drawn the Legion but didnt:

Pablo Marcos (if paired with Phil Jiminez, if would almost be as if George Perez was back at DC)
John Byrne (if paired with his old X-Men collaberater Terry Austin, who knows what improvements could have been made if given the chance?)
June Brigman (okay, she drew 1 issue, but her renditions of the Adult Legion were superb)
Christopher Taylor (another Perez clone who should have broken out with extra Legion duties)
Howard Bender (who with inker Dave Hunt managed to channel Curt Swan effectively in LSH 295)
Joe Giella (just one inking job on the Earthwar Saga and he managed to enhance Staton's cartoonish style)
Brian Telford (modesty forbids me from expanding further on this mystery designer)LOL
Romeo Tanghal (this man does wonders with someone else's pencils - Perez, Chuck Patton)
Chuck Patton - whatever happened to this dude?
Dusty Abell (take a look at his gallery of Emerald Eye Legionnairesses in LSH 100)
Rick Hoberg (excellent artist who made cartoons exciting in the 80's to 90's)
Rich Buckler (give him the inker with the calibre of Jerry Ordway)
Jerry Ordway (why did this man never ask for a Legion assignment - his work on CRISIS and ALL-STAR SQUADRON was superb - bar none)
Joe Rubinstein (worked well with several artists but relegated only to the Murder Most Foul tale which was excellent!!!)
Jim Starlin (who also worked on MMF, and who did marvellously on the Mad Brainy sequel where the 2968-2979 headquarters blew up). I know, he did do some art, but i would have liked to have seen more from this sci-fi wizard

Tough job thinking up who could do as good a job as Barry Kitson...oh, wait! I forgot to add Brian Bolland and Dave Gibbons to my wish list.

Look forward to other bits of Legion feedback

Dusty Abell did the entirety of LSH # 25 from the TMK era, featuring a buttload of naked SW6 Legionaires!

My own wish list includes Mike Allred and Jae Lee.

Jim Cheung of YOUNG AVENGERS fame would draw a great Legion, I think.

Maybe Paul Pelletier?

John Byrne - a target for the hate-list?

Would it be....because by revamping Superman, he erased all mention of his having a Superboy career and so never was inspiration for the Legion (in this timeline, at least?)

Or something even more deeper...or sinister

Rome Is Byrning

Why should I ever buy another superhero comic by Byrne?

There are a few more less-Byrne centered topics in the comic forum, but that should give you an idea.

Personally, I don't like creator-bashing going on here, but John's big mouth makes that a virtual impossibility.

*Sigh* Some people just don't understand the appeal of ten page threads on characters who only appeared for one panel...

As for the subject of this topic, George Perez is the artist that I'd love to see draw the team who hasn't had much of a chance yet.

I was amazed over the last month or so to see there was actually hope for John Byrne.

On Superman, he was teamed with GAIL SIMONE (who must be 10 times the writer he is) and NELSON (who must be 20 times the inker he is). Because he didn't even PLOT the story (you could tell the difference), even the page layouts were better. BEST damn Byrne work in... oh, 15-20 years???

I think i was able to think up a few more:

Robin Riggs
Doug Hazlewood (i think he did an Annual once, didnt he, involving Phantom Girl's supposed death?)
Neal Adams (did plenty of covers, but not interiors)
Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez
Irv Novick
Frank McLaughlin (altho he was inker over Dick Dillin's take on the Legion/JL/JSA team-up
Don Heck
Kurt Schaffenberger (did Superboy segment in LSH 300, but no more will we see from this talented bloke)
Bob Oksner

Most of these names would have younger fans scratching their heads, but these gentlemen were at the forefront of DC's Silver Age. Whether they will be again is debatable.

Maybe Dan Jurgens, too? His legionairres looked pretty good in Booster Gold.

Oh, yeah, and Mike McKone did a great job on L.E.G.I.O.N. , so why not the LSH (in fact, he'd be a great sub for Barry because their art styles are highly comparable, in my opinion). smile

Doh! And I forgot Adam Hughes! How could I forget Hughes?! His Legionairres one-shot was great--both in terms of story and art!

Actually, Dan Jurgens drew the Legion for a short period of time back in the late 80s. It was the Tales of the Legion series (which ran new stories for the first year and then reprinted the Baxter series).

And didn't Adam Hughes contribute artwork on several issues of Legionnaires? I believe he drew the entire Atlantis issue, and then shared art duties on at least 2 r 3 other issues.

I think Gene Ha from Top 10 or Bryan Hitch/Paul Neery (currently drawing Marvel's The Ultimates 2) would do well. Phil Jimenez would be cool. Get Mike Grell back on board.

Rags: Loved his stint on Hawkman, both his characters and his mood. Can't see it as more than a one-shot, given the time needed to draw Legion.

Kollin: I might want who also did the coloring for his stint on Flash. I just think this style would particularly emphasize the future, a bright future.

Noooo! Don't run down Mr. Giffen! laugh

Seriously, though, while I really like his art--especially in his earlier years--I can understand how its not everyone's cup of tea. In fact, to be honest, his one-shot in the last series of LSH was terrible.

Despite this, however, I'll always have a fondness for him because of the wonderful art he did during the Great Darkness era. At times, it was almost photo-realistic (in particular, some of his drawings of Timber Wolf come to mind).

...which raises the question: WHAT's Larry Mahlstedt up to these days??? (NOBODY made Giffen look like THAT but Larry. Though that ONE cover of ZORRO inked by Joe Sinnott just had me staring at it for hours on end... wow... sooooooo good... if only... IF only...!!)

George Perez! even though he drew the Legion in Crisis and the cover of the Legion of Super Heroes....he said that he realized that he have not drawn the Legion in his 25 years plus yet and he would like to draw the Legion before officially retired. It's mentioned in Pacesetter newsletter.
