Great to see a cover that tells a story, rather than just being a pin-up! Love it!

And LOVE the fact that it spotlights Gim. It does raise a question though...

Why does every Legion continuity have to have its 'Colossal Boy attacks teammates' cover? The Adventures era had that cover with him about to crush big robot boxes containing Lightning Lad and Sun Boy (was it?), the reboot had him battling Cosmic Boy to the misfortune of Legion HQ, and now we have the re-imaginings Gim vs Jo cover. (I'm sure I've probably forgotten a few too.) But no wonder the guy never seemed to have many friends!

Can't wait for this issue!

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #8
Written by Mark Waid
Art by Barry Kitson & Art Thibert

The war that will transform the galaxy begins — inside Legion headquarters! When one Legionnaire quits the team, it strips away the last bit of civility between Cosmic Boy and
Brainiac 5, violently splitting the team in two!

Who's the likely quitter?

Why does that person's decision to split expose the Cos/Brainy rift?

Two teams? At war?

Can there be any winners in this war?

If the cover is any indication it's either Colossal Boy or Ultra Boy. My bet is Colossal Boy.

My guess is it's Ultra Boy. He's never struck me as having the moral compass to choose a side, which is why in the Cosmic Boy-Brainiac 5 philosophical split it would seem to me that he'd be scratching his head as the others choose sides. He's also fairly powerful, and with a war loonming in the horizon he'd be the more crucial one rather than Microlossal Ladboy (he'd be such a big target too).

So it would seem like the team'll wind up having a split, perhaps on how to deal with the war. Anyone care to wager on who takes what side?

COSMIC BOY
- Triplicate Girl: she *is* spying for him
- Saturn Girl: big guess, but she founded the LSH with Cos
- Lightning Lad: ditto Saturn Girl
- Sun Boy: he'll rally behind Cos for sure
- Colossal Boy: Brainy's move stops being "fun/happy" for him

BRAINIAC 5
- Invisible Kid: he got in care of Brainy
- Element Lad: he sees Brainy as being a rawer catalyst of change
- Shadow Lass: she strikes me as being in favor of radical change
- Projectra: we haven't seen her, but she strikes me as being haughty enough to want something like this; plus if the covers are a reasonable basis, then she'd be with Brainy
- Karate Kid: the boy does like getting his hands dirty

Undecided: Ultra Boy

From the latest issue, it seems that the quitter might be Sunboy. As seen in #1, perhaps Dirk was able to bring Cos more towards the middle of the road closer to Brainy's agenda and with him gone, Brainy will be forced to take more direct means of enforcing his direction for the team (?)

Looks cool. I hope these two actually fight...and I hope Ultra Boy doesn't beat him to bad.

I think it's Sun Boy who quits. If you notice he's right up there with Cos and Brainy as someone the other may look up to. He's like in the middle of Cos and Brainy...the balance is thrown.

Sun Boy would seem to be the logical choice as the one who quits BUT the solicit for issue #7 referred to the possible removal of a key Legionnaire because of a secret involving the United Planets. The same Legionnaire, or not?

The cover implies that Colossal Boy and Ultra Boy are in opposite camps, but it's hard for me to imagine either aligning himself with Brainy. Was "gullible" CB gulled by Brainy? CB's grievance against UB might in fact be personal.

It's another wonderful piece of art from Barry, but I'm disappointed that it features characters who've dominated the seven previous covers. And I ask again, where are the other founders in this mess? I don't accept the premise that Cos and Brainy are the only two Legionnaires capable of leading the team. They may, however, be the only two idiots who WANT to lead the team.

At this juncture, I wouldn't mind if someone dropped a bomb on Legion HQ and put them all out of their misery.

Assuming the Legionnaires on this cover even appear in the story, I'm thinking maybe Ultra Boy is the quitter. Is not RIMbor a Rimworld? Maybe he's going home to deal with problems there.

Hmmm .... two teams? Sounds like the perfect opportunity to add a second book. Can Legionnaires be far behind?

Funny you should mention the Adventure era. This cover has a very Curt Swan flavor, particularly the background figures. Cosmic Boy even has the 2nd & 3rd fingers pressed together on one hand, which I always associate with Swan.

Could this be the first cover which directly relates to the interior action? Interesting.

I keep having this theory of several of the members going off to form a Legion of Super Villains, simply because heroes need bad guys, and inner betrayals are a big part of comics. It kinda fits with the SCA/Playing at heroics type mentality they're sometimes shown as having.

As for the cover, a brief caption. "Damnit, get a different face, Ultra Boy! People can't tell us apart!!"

Poking fun at early images of the two of them. wink

Y'know, I've been meaning to say that something about Kitson's art reminds me of Kurt Swan's style. I think it has something to do with the male characters' facial expressions and body language. Anybody else agree?
