Well, I voted and looked at the results. The only thing I feel confident of in this poll is that most everyone who has voted so far has a different favorite Legionnaire, which is GREAT. That;s what the Legion is all about, as others have said on this thread.. I don't think 3 votes for one character versus one vote for another character is particularly stastically significant. The way this poll is shaping up, I certainly don't think a case can be made that the winner is the most popular Legionnaire, unless the current character in first place gets quite a few more votes. Still, it was fun, and I think the fact that this poll is saying that there is lots of diversity in everyone's favorites is important.

What Sonnie Boy and Rokk Steady said. Polls are fun. I'm a sucker for polls. I was planning on just being a lurker on these boards until I saw all the polls. Then I HAD to join.

Thanks, SLK. It was always a big part of my intent when I started doing all these Polls a month ago to entice lurkers into becoming members so they could vote in the Polls.

It doesn't seem now, however, that lurkers need any further encouragement to join up. Nor am I any longer the member primarily doing the Polls.
Times change quick!

So far, two of the characters picked for "5 Must Die" have garnered two votes each -- it appears they generate strong feelings in both directions.

It'll be interesting to see who ends up receiving the fewest (or maybe zero) votes.

Quite a few votes at this point and still no one has established a significant lead. Votes are VERY evenly distributed.

Hey Reep,
"I think when push comes to shove in picking one TOP favorite Legionnaire of all time, it's going to cause some "serious" evaluations..." No kidding! I was going to vote for Timber Wolf - my favorite for almost 23years -, but then I hesitated. I don't care much for any of the "Timber Wolf" Versions other than that great Character, which was reintroduced by Cockrum in an old "Superboy"-- with that GREAT costume of his; the same costume, which basically DEFINED the "Timber Wolf" concept-- at least, until Giffen and Lewitz decided 1982, to trash the "old" version of Brin, and redefine him as faithles lover/ Jerk/ "Legion Brute/ and "funny guy" of the Legion. No WONDER Light Lass left him!
But, back to topic, my point is this: You did'nt differentiate in the least between different VERSIONS of a character! If Superboy wins this vote, for instance-- fans would never know if the Kryptonian won, or the clone. So I choosed Saturn Girl instead, who is second- or third-favorite in ANY incarnation anyway. But, still... You differentiated between Sensor and Projektra, even though in a Legion Comic they meet, and were confirmed as different variations of the same heroine. Why did'nt You do the same for the other Legionnaires? (Other than that, of course, Your new poll is great.)

Beyonder, I agreed with Eryk Davis Ester, whose list I utilized in creating my list, that Sensor and Projectra are significantly distinct characters even though they have a few connections. This has been the strong majority view among fans for a long time - when people have put forth that they are the same character, the outrage and keyboards could be heard globally.

I'm guessing that EDE had the same reasoning as myself in not separating pre & post-boot versions, or different character versions within each era (i.e. Lightning/Light Lass) - the list would be too massive and unwieldy (perhaps 70-80+? characters) and would probably wind up being only single votes throughout the Poll. Which neutralizes the point for having the Poll in the first place - finding out which characters are the most popular.

A big part of creating Polls is devising the best list of choices, not to small or large, with no inappropriately combined or separated choices. No list is perfect, but they can be optimal for the focus of the Poll.

Hello Reep,
You know, so far as Projektra and Sensor are concerned, I actually share Your opinion: "...that Sensor and Projectra are significantly distinct characters even though they have a few connections. This has been the strong majority view among fans for a long time - when people have put forth that they are the same character, the outrage and keyboards could be heard globally."
I mean, Princes P. was never one of my favorite Legionnaires, but she WAS important enough for me to get "a little angry", when Roger Stern&Co reintroduced her not as a human Princes, but as a serpent. You know the saying: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." And that from one who, during his childhood during the early 80s, thought Projectra somewhat "boring". And now imagine all those poor fans, who have chossen Projectra as their favorite Legionnaire, or WORSE, as their alltime favorite superhero AT ALL! I only used that as an argument, as an excuse to whine, okay? I WAS a little put down becouse of the Timber Wolf Situation: many of us fans love very distinct versions of a specific legion member, and not at all like any other variants of that hero (i. e. Dave Cockrum's Timber Wolf versus all other versions of Brin, or the original version of Wildfire over those ghastly later versions). So I couldn't vote for my REAL favorite member, because HIS place in the chain depends so much on the version of the Legion he's part of. and so I was forced to vote for Saturn Girl, who, in ANY of the Legion's many incarnations, ALLWAYS is near the head of the chain.
My point is, those are VERY DIFFERENT HEROES. The difference may not be so great as between, say, Superman and Spider-Man, but it is greater than the difference of, say, Golden Age Batman and Golden Age Green Arrow. How can we say, for exampel, "Lightning Lad/ Live Wire is the winner of this poll, so he's the most popular Legionnaire!"? How could we DO that, if we never knew if the voters meant Lightning Lad or Live Wire? (And, by the way, WHICH Live Wire? Batch SW7 or Reboot version?) See what I mean? They are certainly not the same. It would be similar if there were a poll: "Favorite Superhero", and I (or You) would enter: "Fantastic Four". WHICH ONE?
We are never to sure which Legionnaire actualy WON the crown. SaturnGirl

Well, not really. All the members of the Fantastic Four aren't named Johnny Storm.

Most versions of Legionnaires have the same civilian name. And they are just that: different versions of the same character. Members of the Fantastic Four are different and separate characters.

I wouldn't recommend letting that one Time Trapper story you mention create your perspective and understanding of the Legion. It's a one-time story situation, showing brief appearances of different possible multiple-realities versions of the characters. It's an quasi-Hypertime exception, not the general longtime understanding among most fans that, basically, most are the same characters (with maybe different costumes and powers,) regardless of the era.

Perhaps this is the first Poll you've seen like this, but there have been many over the years that combined different era Legionnaires and asked voters to pick their favorites. It's not something I invented.

But if you wish to do a Poll with all the many versions of the Legionnaires listed separately, you are welcome to it.

Your'e probably right. But I STILL think that just as there is a big difference between the Supermen of Earth -2, -1, and -0 (the "current DCU"), there is a big difference between, say, Sun Boy and the Batch W6-Inferno-- even if they're both are Dirk Morgna.
Ah, well-- say, who of the Legionnayres do You think will be the winner after this poll is over? SaturnGirl
