I get a snicker outta the title of this thread. A week or two ago I was leafing through some old issues of LSH from the end of V2 start of V3. One of the letters contained almost this exact same line about Levitz' legion now beloved by so many of the posters here.
Being new to Legion fandom with this reboot. I'll summarize what this all means.
Legion Fans never change, only the Legion does.

Moopsball, Royal perogatives, military tours of duty, corporate intrigue, children, politics and lots and lots of barely comprehensible sub plots. I thought it was a wonderful ride all the way up to Zero Hour.
I loved seeing "My" Legion grow up and take on the next level of life while nurturing yet another "generation" of young Legionnaires. I'd still be buying THAT book if I only could. Ditto to the MAX! The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

Not critical, simply amazed. I have a request, amigo, that this could be explored and discussed in depth on a new thread by itself.

[/b]I'm amazed that you're amazed! Discussing character essence and proto-characterization might be fun, but I'll leave it up to you to start a thread or not. The cartoon characters are the same people, too.

Just to chime in, I think the size of the team is never an issue and one of the strengths of the Legion. As are the history and continuity.
I tend to agree with Tromium...I think the less the Legion is tied to the DCU, the less interested some people are going to be. Personally, I wouldn't mind either way, although I prefer a connection to Superboy, Superman and the Super-supporting cast.

I always want a Superboy connection and not too much of a connection otherwise with the 21st century.

I'd like to have Superboy as well. A genuine "Superman when he was a boy" character. But I don't see why that Superboy has to be a younger version of the Superman who is hanging out in twenty titles every month. Have a Superboy title, have a Legion title, and set them in their own continuity.

I also would like Superman when he was a boy.

Me too, just a Kon-El Superman as a boy. :-)
