WELL SAID, blockade boy!! the covers made me more excited and hopeful for each issue. infact, 47 was one of my FAVORITE covers. i think every time the cover was way more exciting than what actually happened inside.

Manapul did a good job, but not the kinda job that's going to pull in a big audience. I agree that he'll be great some day, but I'm tired of DC putting people on the Legion that aren't already great. Legion isn't a place where newbie artists get a chance to develop their skills -- then leave for another book (or company) when they blossom. [/b]I have to disagree with this. The Legion has had a few hot new artists make their name with the team and then move on to other successful projects. It's something of a Legion tradition. Cockrum, Grell, Giffen, Lightle, Coipel come to mind. I always enjoy the team most when presented by a talented newbie.

Francis' covers are the some of the most dynamic I've seen, especially on a Legion comic.
I don't want to bash Jim Shooter, but having a 16 (or 18) issue arc featuring a drawn out war with name-less, face-less enemies and the betrayal of a trusted member in a series that was suffering from too many of this exact same story-line over and over in the last several years was hardly ground-breaking or original. I'd have preferred (and maybe the other fans as well) a done-in-one-or-two issue adventure featuring a different handful of Legionnaires each time, which is what Shooter was known for before.
And is it just me or is Shooter channeling Claremont this entire run? Over-wordy characters doing anything and everything out of character with Meander-ing (Pun intended) stories.
Francis art rocked each and every issue and I've become a life-long fan and supporter. Jim was lucky to get such a creative collaborator.

In fact, I'll even go further and say the book is often at its best and most groundbreaking when a hungry young artist is on it. All the names above qualify. Cockrum came out of nowhere and revitalized the look of the team, moving them out of the '50s into the '70s. Grell finished what Cockrum started. Giffen was on his second chance when he came to the book and updated it from the '70s all the way to the 2980s. Lightle put a polish on Giffen's work. And Coipel kept the book moving even further into the future (I wasn't a big fan of Olivier's at the time, but I've since reassessed; what I really didn't like was Lanning's inks). There's something about an artist with something to prove that just works on the Legion and Francis , who's good enough that he shouldn't have to prove anything to anyone, fits nicely into the Legion mold.

It was the art that was making the series worthwhile.

To all the Shooter fans, I'm not going to make you happy.
I have to agree with many of you here who say this is just a bad story. I guess I've grown up with so many Legion couples that have been ingrained in us, that the ones being foisted upon us now just make me squirm uncomfortably in my seat. I realize Shooter was trying something new, but it just didn't work for me. For example:
Couple we are used to: Star Boy Thom and Dream Girl. These guys have always been together it seems. Even when he was wearing the bight purple, yellow and white costume with the cape, he just seemed meant for her. She was the damsel, and he was the strong man.
Not used to: Brainy and Dream Girl. How is it that he talks down to LL and berates him for his stupidity when Nura in this issue essentially becomes fascinated with a snow globe? As a character, Brainiac 5 has always looked down upon the less intelligent, i.e. everyone else. Here, he is no better that the schoolboy having wet dreams about the unattainable stereotypical cheerleader. It seems forced and unnatural.
I have to say that my favorite Threeboot character (ok, one of the few I can stand) is Phantom Girl. She is smart, a comic collector, caring, and FJM draws her hot!
Page 8. This...uggh...artist... draws her face differently in every panel. Panel 2: Asian. Panel 3-almost like Don Heck. Panel 8-Yuck. And what kind of artist can't draw breasts on a character whose costume is one big peek? I mean, panels 4 and 8. Dude, have you ever seen breasts??? CLEAVAGE.
Same page, panels 1 and 5. Vi's and CB's faces. WHAT EFFORT! They look like Bratz dolls!
The story was weird and forced, the art---well, the art was crap. Sorry.
Long Live all them Legions!

I read this last night, quickly, and it was good for Hallowe'en. Madame Meander was a captivating character and I'm sorry she (probably) won't have a future with DC.
To echo Brainy's own advice, Dream Girl should move on to a further realm. I didn't like what happened to her, but it was sort of a Greek myth kind of thing, and interesting in that respect. But the woman/spirit had no purpose other than to be an accessory of Brainiac 5 and occasionally warn him of trouble. Ghosts usually hang around because of unfinished business - she seems more like a captive. Although she claims that it's her desire to stay with him, I get the impression that he's hanging on to her. (I still have trouble grasping that that's really Nura in his mind and not entirely his own construct.)
Evil Princess Projectra is not what I would have chosen for the character, but it's not at all unbelievable. Projectra in past versions was a hero, not particularly haughty or royal, more like Princess Diana than Catherine the Great. This Projectra certainly fits the type of royalty that has led to revolutions. It's not clear to what extent she's being controlled by the other Orandoans.
Phantom Girl is one of the stars of this series, IMO. She is really competent and caring, taking care of all sorts of details, on top of things. Perhaps her character benefits by not being aligned with Ultra Boy. If the Legion were continuing, I'd vote for her for leader.
I didn't find the art objectionable at all. It was a different style which I rather liked and I'd be interested to see what Leonardi does in the future.

The platinum blondes are cursed in all legion series.
Projectra, in the original series... Her platet was almost destroy por the LSV and her love (Val) died. Shes has a brillant moment like Sensor Girl, but in the 5YG, I'm only see a week queen in a medieval planet.(Only saved for Mordru Arises) More the SW Projectra died only for the stupid diversity in the Legionnaires. In the reeboot....All the snackie fiasco. And now, Orando no more, and a great character destroy for a pair of writers.
Dream Girl, always almost a second class character, but in the Great Darkness Saga she grow up. And again in the 5YG she's a fat nynphomanicac white a little exposure. The SW Dream Girl only have a few chapters and died in the infamous Zero Hour. The reeboot Nura, a silly narcoleptic for only shine (after khund training) in the end of Legion series. Now, a great vision of Nura..for what? Died in the 11 and we have a ghost inside Brainiac 5 mind. A very sad destiny for two of my favorites legionaires.
The episode 47 is horrible! The only good thing is Phantom Girl.
From UK with glamour.

I'm hoping it will be revealed that Projectra was brainwashed by the potion the baron gave her and is being manipulated by her countrymen.
I think it's good that the old classic Legion couples have been broken up and mixed and matched. Almost every single original girl Legionnaire was assigned a boyfriend way back in the 60s and for 40+ years we've seen little or no deviation from that. I think pairing Dream Girl and Brainy is a breath of fresh air, though I'm not crazy about the method used to draw them together: killing her and planting her "ghost" in his mind. And I agree that her personality seemed off this issue compared to what Waid originally presented it as in this boot.
I'm surprised at how polarized people are becoming over Shooter and Manapul. I like Manapul's art okay, but it's hardly as stellar as everyone is trying to make it sound in defending him against Shooter's criticisms and in comparing him to other great artists like Cockrum, Lightle and early Giffen. I also don't think Shooter is the anti-Christ that some are trying to paint him as.

The "Dream Girl" in Brainy's head is his own redemption of her too-soon demise. The one that appeared to Dream Boy (those pants were a bad idea) is the real Nura and she only made herself visible briefly to forwarn him about some great new threat on the horizon ... LO3W? The real undead Dream Girl has secrectly been working with the real Princess Projectra (not crazy) to mask their true intensions of helping to resolve the outcome for the LO3W's plot! The depictions of both ladies in recent issues is just one big elaborate illusion, made to throw off the "hidden" villan and is the brainstorm of...... COSMIC BOY! How'd I do? I crack myself up!

Ooh, and Karate Kid and Trips also had to go to the secret place where Cosmic Boy has been orchestrating these events, so there will be a big reunion. Sun Boy's been there the whole time, setting things up. Mon-El is there, too. That cure that Brainy made actually worked. He's not stuck in the Phantom Zone at all. I like the view of the pyramids, here, especially.

People didn't like this issue? I'm truly puzzled.
For me it was a terrific interlude issue. They can't go on bashing anything because of the truce so several characters were advanced, a terrific new one introduced and plot was still advanced. The art was perfect for me. Low stress a little cartoony which matched the first half of book, particularly the Brainy-Madame Meander scenes perfectly. The issue got dard in the later half and the art still held up for my taste. I'll be glad when the action starts to have Manipul back but the fill in was well appreciated by me.
We've been hit over the head so many times with sci, magic and God knows how many levels of hell this was a nice change, bringing in dreaming. It's such a natural for the character now that I see it, I'm wondering what took so long.
I can get the Dream Girl-Star Boy traditionalists angst and now, I have to admit I was disappointed in the "blinding." Seemed some potential was lost there but I do have to wonder if this was Waid's plan all along or Shooter making something out of nothing.
IMO, kudos to whomever.
For me this was a really fun issue.

Cockrum, Grell, Giffen, Lightle, Coipel come to mind. I always enjoy the team most when presented by a talented newbie. [/QB] Legion wasn't Giffen's first work. He'd been working on mainstream comics since the mid-70s -- including a run with Paul Levitz on All-Star Comics featuring the JSA. Coipel's early issues made my eyes bleed. Look at the beautiful stuff he does now compared to his early Legion work. There's no comparison. Lightle was pretty good right out of the gate, but don't forget that he started out finishing Giffen's breakdowns. Grell's Legion work never wowed me. He posed Legionnaires in awkward positions. His later stuff was much better. Of course, I was biased against him because he replaced... DAVE COCKRUM! Okay, this guy was great from his first issue of Legion -- and in some ways, I think it's his strongest series -- probaby because he was inking himself (Marvel assigned some crappy inkers to him on the earliest issues of his Uncanny X-Men run). But again, Dave was working some other work before Legion (I think he worked for the company that owned Vampirella).

I think Manapul was solid, but he's not at a fan-fave level yet like Cockrum was in the 70s or Giffen in the early 80s. I think that's just one of the ingredients Legion needs to thrive. Shooter and Manapul seemed well-suited. Neither wowed me, but both did good work. I wish Shooter would have reduced the first arc to about 6 issues and moved on though. Also wish he had added some new members earlier in the series.

I actually met Waid at a Con last year and asked what he had planned for Dream Girl in the long run if he had stayed on the book. He said she was going to have Dream Girl eventually show up in everyone's' dreams and then eventually would get her body back. He did NOT mention blinding her or stripping her powers so that must have been Shooter's idea. I finally picked up this issue.....AWFUL! Art was horrible....ugg I finally get to see Nura and it isn't drawn by Francis. I was never a fan of Leonardi. The story was just bad....the "demons" were just stupid. Why didn't Nura's precognition warn her?? Just a very bad issue.....so disappointing.

didn't like this issue. Manapul's art was missed. i just hated the art, and i've like Leonardi in the past. Dream Girl seemed totally out of character, or at least one dimensional. did Projectra enter Brainy's Psyche and let out the "terrorists"? it was a bit confusing story-telling wise. "this ddor and 3 others"? i think our editorial staff sucks. where is sun boy and his terror firma refugees who destroyed projectra's world? there is no editorial guidance here. an unknown planet teleports into our solar system and brainy has time to go to sleep several times??? Atom Girl and Colossal Boy play ping pong? guess they've forgiven each other, and there's no emergency. as far as shooter's criticism's of manapul, they are unfounded. he's been great. the only criticisms i have about the covers are that they often depicted throw away scenes rather than actual plots. they are always drawn very well though. goodbye, 3 boot legion i'm afraid i won't miss ya. i think John's Legion will be a fixture of the new "Adventure" title.

I thought the issue was interesting.
There was a lot of attention on Brainy, Dream Girl, and Projectra and some answers for a few plot threads dangling for months.
Wasn't too thrilled about Dream Girl losing her powers (dying wasn't enough?), but Brainy's demons coming to life is a back door for the return of a physical Nura as well. Maybe Projectra (or the AWOL Dream Boy) can assist with Dream Girl regaining her powers.
The artwork gave the issue a sort of dreamy/smoke & mirrors feel to the story, which was appropriate for a Dream Girl/Brainy/Projectra focus.
Things will be fast and furious in the next three issues if a) the Legion plans to add new members, b) there is a resolution of the Saturn Girl/Lightning Lad spat, and C) a conclusion to the Invader Planet/Alien war is to take place.
I'll be here.

While I have genuinely admired the art of Barry, Dennis, and Francis on this title, and enjoyed many aspects of Waid's, Bedard's and Shooter's writing. This series has rarely lived up to it promise or my expectations. As for the quality of fill-in art, I will say in defense of everyone who filled in, "good effort." Legion is a monster for any artist -- so many characters, such complex scenes. The materials a fill-in gets as far as references for drawing the characters and the lead time to produce the work are probably always inadequate.

I didn't much care for the art, but I tried to bite my tongue, because the dude was given an impossible task. For that matter, I was a bigger fan of Barry Kitson, who came across as a very cool person, than some of his artwork. Given that he hung out here, I wasn't comfortable with the idea of talking trash about him. (Heck, I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable trash-talking Rob Liefield to his face... I'm a wuss!) In the meantime folks can entertain themselves counting the number of heroes and villains in LO3W created from scratch by Jim Shooter (some two dozen, not counting duplicate characters). Geoff Johns would have nothing to reboot, retcon, revamp and reimagine if its weren't for the enduring work of JS and the other bona fide greats of the Silver and Bronze ages of the Legion. Imo, it's a shame so many readers can't (or care not to) differentiate between true creativity, which can produce uncomfortable and even painful results at times, and the comfortable medicocrity that comes of mere adaptation and mimicry. I don't know if that was directed at me or not, but I think you're over generalising (and out of line to boot). I can certainly appreciate Shooter's legacy and am thankful for all he brought to the the Legion during his early run. That doesn't mean he gets a pass from me for writing garbage in the here and now. Similarly I'm not an unabashed Johns fan (and actively dislike a lot of his stuff), but won't deny I find Lo3W, imperfect though it may be, a heckuva a lot more engaging than the current LSH. That said, I may knock the current run of the LSH, but I don't call down readers who like it or call into question their ability to appreciate the artistry of any given work. You'd do well to do the same. [/b] By describing Shooter's run as "garbage" you are calling down *his* fans and impugning their taste and judgment. I don't appreciate being told I'm out of line when you clearly crossed that line first.
And no, the second paragraph wasn't directed at you specifically, but at everyone who's "glad" the Legion is on the verge of complete collapse. The implosion of the Shooter run and the end of the monthly series is a blow to the entire franchise that injures every other version of the Legion, including the Johnsboot. It'll be years, if ever, before the editorial damage inflicted by Didio and company is repaired. What's there to be "glad" about? . . . . P.S. Set, for the record, I'm a she. I go back 45 years with the Legion and I never thought I'd be reading it on its 50th anniversary. Now I'm sorry I'm here to see the travesty made of it. If Johns or Didio were here, I wouldn't hestitate to offer my opinion of them. Respectfully of course [/b]My Apologies, Looking back I was a lot more snarly than was warranted (I must have had a rotten week, I went after someone at work for no good reason either). That said, I don't think the demise of the Shooter team spells the complete collapse of the Legion. I'm not glad the book is ending (though I am glad this creative team is done), but I would find it the height of idiocy for Didio to axe a 20K book as a personal grudge against a creator when there's just been a reasonably successful appearance of the property in Action and good sales on their FC tie-in. I still maintain something's up and come March we'll have some idea of what it is.

I think Shooter kinda lost me with this issue. I've been unhappy and quiet since I found out Jeckie was going to be the series-ending villain. While it's a not illogical evolution and climax for this PARTICULAR Jeckie, seeing it in the context of Legion meta-history, it makes me want to puke. This will be the second Legion series in the last decade to end with a Legionnaire-turned-villain. Please may it be the last time we see this trope.
And since when did Jeckie get the power to invade people's consciousness? A little more setup there would have been nice. When she was unlocking Brainy's demons, I thought she was contaminating the grain in the storage compartments on Space Station K-7. It was a pure WTF? moment.
Finally, the portrayal of Dream Girl in this issue was perhaps the worst I have EVER read. It makes the Silver Age stories look like radical feminist agit-prop. Waid's Dream Girl was one of THE highlights of the 3Boot. Here, she's a swooning, simpering, long-suffering, stand-by-her manbot kinda gal and it makes me want to puke (Oops, second time I've written that). Waid's Dream Girl would have fought off the Brainy's neurosis demons single handedly, chewed Brainy out for not controlling them, and them sealed her dominance with some pity-sex. Shooter destroyed the character.
A rushed, slap-dash, half-ass job, this.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"
