Hmmm...lots of interesting little bits in this one.

Jo turns out to be a stand up guy...

Imra & Garth may be splitsville...

Garth begins to really act like a leader...

Jeckie isn't the only Orandoan alive but I'm not certain that's a good thing....

Brainy is still an A**hole!

They mentioned her. Brainy tried to deny she was alive.

The bit with Brainy, Cham and IK was quite amusing. Brainy is like "no problems, why are you looking at me like that". I like that Garth is finally getting it together.

This was kind of a depressing story, what with all the infighting and mistrust between the Legionnaires. I really liked the scenes with Tinya and Jeckie, though. Tinya showed great patience and behaved the way a friend ought to behave. It seemed like Jeckie was starting to learn something from her, until the Orandan survivors showed up and ruined everything.

I liked it. Fun cover. Ultra Boy eating a muffin and sipping a warm drink in a 31st century diner. That's unique. The corresponding scene in the story was fun. Here's hoping we see more of the Silver Moon Diner and Sister Scrap Iron.

Garth, Imra and Jo all acted with integrity. Nice to see. They are supposed to be heroes. That doesn't mean that they are perfect, but they do the right thing in the end.

Projectra was very much in line with the character that Waid originally introduced in this version of the Legion. It's good to see that she is still so deepley impacted by the loss of her world. She is growing. Slowly and still taking wrong turns, but she will get there.

Phantom Girl was right in character, too. She is becoming the most likable of the Legionnaires.

Props to Francis for another solid performance.

I made sure I got to my local store before they sold out. At 2:30 pm, they only had three issues left on the shelves.

I really loved this issue. The Ultra Boy rounding up applicants was amusing, but the meat of the issue was in the character development and interactions.

The situation with Projectra is very intriguing and, I agree, the timing was frustrating. It was like she was just about to turn a page and then the supposed Orandan survivors showed up (if they truly are survivors). I loved the Tinya/Jeckie interaction. I also enjoy the Jeckie/Brin relationship and would have liked to see more of it. This was probably the first time that Brin had to console someone else for being accused of violent outbursts. (As an aside, was the Brin/Ayla scene in the med center an homage to their preboot history?)

Garth/Imra/Jo. I thought the resolution of that situation was realistic and everyone acted in character. Jo showed some maturity, Imra realized the consequences right away, and Garth dealt with the hurt and anger while also realizing that he had to but the Legion first. One thing I really appreciated was that Imra's confession and Garth's immediate reaction were not belabored. Just seeing their reactions told the full story. (Wonderful work by Manapul to convey that.)

Brainy was in top form. Not only did he get a nice reaction to Star Boy, but the scene with Cham was LOL funny. Poor Cham! I only wondered if Cham's cut off appendage would remain intact after being separated from his body.

First off, I want to pay an apology to Ultra Boy (as if he was real). Yeah, he’s a “dog” and a “jerk” but he has enough self-awareness to admit it himself, and he displayed personal honor in offering to confront Garth. I also accused him last month of emotionally manipulating Imra, but now looks like the situation may be 180 degrees the reverse. And I believe him when he insisted “nothing happened” – nothing more than some hot and heavy foreplay, anyway. Jo has no reason whatever to lie. And besides, he had his pants on.

Imra, unfortunately, comes off as a very creepy, emotionally disturbed little girl, imo. I’m not ready to charge her with deliberately seducing Jo into the pantry in the hope of getting caught by her inattentive boyfriend (though she seemed a bit too eager to run out and confess), but I do think the reason she *lied* to Garth about what actually transpired was to give him some emotional “shock-therapy”, regardless of the consequences to Ultra Boy. In that one sense, Imra definitely set Jo up and acted dishonestly.

And at the end, when she’s eavesdropping on Lyle and Jo, I don't think she’s crying so much out of regret or guilt, or because she feels bad for Ultra Boy, she’s crying because (imo) Lightning Lad refused to react the way she wanted him to and treated them both like ants, confirming her hidden fears that Garth doesn’t care about her any more. “He couldn’t have hurt me more”, says Jo of Garth’s coldness towards him. He’s speaking for Imra, too.

I’m proud of Garth for putting the good of the team first and for refusing to be goaded into losing his cool, and I hope for his sake that "We're finished" means finished once and for all, no looking back. The charming Madame President seems quite moonstruck. I wish her best of luck when LL comes rebounding her way.

Should they ever lose their Legion jobs Garth and Jan would actually make a pretty good comedy team (You ignoramus! Yoiks!).

M'Rissey asking Lightning Lad to write a excuse note to his parents was very sweet.

Moving on to Projectra (looking quite gorgeous in her new shoulderless costume) -- the survivors plans for "revenge" sound none too healthy, and I suspect that emotion-wiping potion may last more than 24 hours. Jeckie's burgeoning new powers (whatever they are) go far to explain the source of her recent, unexplainable behavior.

The comic book Phantom Girl was reading to Jeckie was Action #242, the 1958 debut of Braniac. Did it actually have a story in it about a king turned villains who lost his people? I couldn't make out the other cover.

Brainy chopping off Cham’s hand to get the data-ripper gun was gruesome-funny. B5 protests that Dream Girl is dead and gone – but we all know better. Happy nappy time, lover.

Kudos to FJM for another wonderfully drawn issue.

Definitely one of the best issues of the Shooter-Manapul team. Even though I'm not liking what's happening with my favorite characters, I'm enjoying reading and looking at it!

Keep up the great work guys! Here's hoping the rumors about the death of this series are untrue.

I'm all for character growth and no, I don't want it to take years, but it seemed to me that Shooter is trying to "fix" every character's flaws in the eyeblink of a single issue. Look at all the members who did total character reversals in this issue:

Garth suddenly the mature in-charge leader
Jo all contrite and apologetic instead of cocky and headstrong (If Jo's so hurt by Garth's anger, why was he banging his girlfriend in the first place?)
Projectra suddenly asking for help and dropping her royal attitude at the first suggestion
Lyle NOT snitching after all
Imra refusing to mindwipe Lyle when she just did it to the Rimborian cops an issue or two ago
Brin being Mr. Sensitive and Supportive instead of feral and bloodthirsty

Did I miss anybody? Don't get me wrong. I like the changes in these characters, just don't think it should happen over night and for everyone at once.

I wonder if Shooter is modeling M'rissey after himself when he first started writing the Legion at 13.

I'm glad the Orando tragedy is finally being dealt with. It's been swept under the rug for too long.

Can't wait to see Dream Girl next issue. Where is Dream Boy? Why create a new Legionnaire and then ban him to obscurity? Either use him or get rid of him, please.

I was confused by the scene between Lyle and Garth. I didn't realize the . . . in Lyle's conversation indicated a time lapse the first time I read it. Lyle's seemingly sudden change of topic appeared to me to indicate that Imra had stopped Lyle from blabbing so that Jo could do it first.

I read it and liked it. Nice to see Jo as the rock star of this team. He's my favorite character though.

jim, i don't think these things happened over night. We've seen Garth as leader from Shooter's first issue. We've seen his failings and he has gotten better. But I don't think he's gone as far "mature" just yet.

Projectra still has the royal attitude, IMO. And her subplot just got very interesting! Is she going inherit a truckload of power? If she does will she go bad? Maybe she will inherit an incredibly powerful Eye? wink

This issue was better then last issue, but it still had some problems. Primarily, I'm not interested in a book titled "Ultra-Boy and the Legion of Super-Heroes", which is more and more what it is starting to feel like. Character-wise, I thought it was about the only way forward for the Imra/Jo/Garth mess, but I'm not sure I buy the way U-B is being painted as if we should feel sorry for him. Liked the Jeckie and Tinya scenes, but felt the Orando stuff was a little rushed. Didn't care for the Brainy/Cham sequence, it just wasn't as inspiringly funny as other sequences with Brainy, and was a little too cruel, even for threeboot Querl.

Really loved this issue. Gets better from month to month. Shooters Legion provides a kind of story that rather drags you in than keeping you out (as Waids sterile storytelling did).

Great story developing here: What's up with Jeckies new powers? Who are these destroyer guys and how could they move a planet? And of course, my favorite: Personal drama, baby! Yeah, loved the love triangle, and I'm very curious what it was that Garth told Jo that made him so sad...

Just my kind of Legion: Constantly growing storylines with lots of character development. Kudos!

Oh, and Manapuls art was pure fun. Really love the sexy tidbits he's adding - Imra putting her shirt on, Ayla putting it off - little bit of Manga "customer service", but it's a nice touch. The first page was a bit shaky, but the rest was great.

I'll say it again: Sad to see this creative team go. What would've happened if they had come on the book a year earlier???

Best issue so far in terms of character development. And probably my favorite LSH issue since LSH v4 #39. Shooter just nails it on creating believable three-dimentional characters. Most of you guys have said the right things before, so I'll just add to that:

1) Mark McKenna's inks do tend to make Manapul's art more straightforward than Livesay's more intricated brushes. I don't think he fits with FJM that much. However, Manapul's art seems to be flowing freer now than before. It worked for this issue perfectly.
2) I didn't see any "180 degrees" change in personalities, as someone said. It's just the opposite: what we first simply could've guessed, now we had it openly present. In fact, most of MY guesses were right. And Saturn Girl might not have lied at all: I think she might have said she would have gone all the way. That would be just as crushing but also explain why he didn't buy Jo's explanations.
3) Kin'thea is now more than ever looking like Adult Saturn Girl. Is there something cooking about this uncanny resemblance? And yeah, Garth is gonna get jiggy with her... That's a cool twist
4) And what a build up to the next storyline... It does feel threatening. Unline Super-Turtle on L3W. (Please, read Ambush Bug #3!)

That 'he couldn't have hurt me more' line seemed a tad overwrought (dude, he didn't break up with you), even if it did fit with the threeboot interpretation of Jo as being a 'belonger' or 'pack member' who thinks of the team as his family or 'gang,' but otherwise, I liked this issue. Stuff continues moving along.

The 'lie' thing seems to work in one of two ways for me;

1) Imra *wanted* it to be over and just cut to the chase, since it *would* have happened if not for Invisibilus Kiddus Interruptus.

2) Imra said something oblique like 'we were fooling around,' which is completely accurate, even if coitus did not occur. She's right, in that she betrayed Garth even if the act didn't get consummated. Jo tried to cover for her and take all the blame on himself, and Garth didn't buy it.

Jo's decision to say that Imra stopped it (when the opposite actually was more accurate) could be seen as 'gallant' (taking the heat on himself instead) or as 'condescending' (trying to shield the little lady from the consequences of her own choices and actions). It was in-character, 'though, so that's cool.

It's kind of up in the air what could happen here. Will Imra and Jo avoid each other, each finding the other an uncomfortable reminder of how they screwed up? Will they fall into an *actual* relationship, brought together bcause of their shared experience (of guilt, in this case). Could they do the unthinkable, and become friends, despite their interlockable body parts?

Projectra appears to have some super-strength going on as well. Eeenteresting...

Brin continues to follow his Waid-established characterization, a dismissive jerk to pretty much everyone (although he seems to have ditched the active scorn he had for the Legion as an entity, when he was first introduced, which is nice), and yet a gallant gentleman to Projectra. It's an unusual characterization.

Severed Durlan body parts don't revert? That's new. The 'death of Brande' implies otherwise, that when a Durlan ceases actively maintaining a shape, they revert. I don't like that scene at all, for both continuity reasons and characterization reasons. Pretty much my least favorite scene in the book.

Projectra wasn't the only Orandan off-world, which we've known since she was introduced (since she had bodyguards in her first appearance). This plotline was pretty much abandoned by Waid, and it's nice to see it finally picked up, even if it's far from fresh, at this point...

The Jo/Imra thing was done in Lost. I hope it's dismissed quickly. Don't need a replay of tension/drama between them.

I don't think Imra is lying. When Jo said, "nothing happened," and Garth said,"that's not what Imra said." I think he's saying that just because they didn't go all the way that doesn't mean "nothing happened." Something else else sexually inappropriate DID happen.

In other words, Imra's attitude is: I did something wrong. Jo's attitude is: Hey, we didn't go all the way, so no harm, no foul. Garth sees the difference.

I did think it was completely out of character for Jo to be so "hurt" by Garth. What did he expect? A big ole man hug?

The horde of troublemaking YH candidates that Jo got creative with was particularly nice. Mr Nah whooshes between street life and galactic straits like nobody else in the Legion. I like this run, this story and this issue. FJM, take another bow; I can't wait for your Night Girl.

My interpretation is, something did happen, and Imra is telling the truth about it but Jo is hoping against hope that he can lie their way out of it to that extent.

I'm with Jim on this. Imra thought a lot happened, Jo didn't think much happened. Garth feels betrayed by both.

I hope Imra moves on, without a lot of moping about over the boys. Chin up, girl!

I like this unprecedented friendship between Tinya and Jecky. It's working.

All the Jo vs the Young Heroes stuff was Legion-y goodness (echoing my call on last issue's Garth & El Legion-y goodness). I liked it when Jo replied "Nah." What an elegant little touch.

Whaaat? Sliced Cham! Wow Brainy, that's a new one. What will happen to the removed part?

Many of Manapul's drawings of the characters could make iconic portraits. Very nice. The colors are good, too.

I think it's pretty cool that we the readers -- as well as the the characters in the book -- can't agree about who did what to whom and why. Shooter's composing an Interlac Rashamon.

That being said, I believe Shooter has barely begun plumbing Imra's depths. In this 22-page story, we saw exactly what stuff Jo and Garth are made of, and I think we can reasonably expect them to follow these characterizatons from now on, but Imra's a more elusive cypher than ever before.
