I just reread Baxter #38 today...still hits hard after all this time. I can only imagine what it was like when it came out in 1987 and some of you must have felt.

Superboy in Mon's arms, with Mon trembling...that's a tough panel for any Legion fan to read.

*sniff*

You need to ASAP, EDE! This was only the second time I've ever read it, myself!

Hope I didn't spoil anything! The final two page spread might be the most heart-wrenching scene of them all, actually, with the statues of all the dead Legionnaires in the background. Like the ending to #306 (?) or so, with the Legionnairees deciding they'd rather not admit new members because enough friends have died, these types of scenes always give a sense of subtle emotion in me.

It brought tears to my eyes. Still does, actually. It was a great send-off to Superboy.

I am not ashamed to say, it brought me to tears as well. I haven't looked at it for a long time frown

Eryk just send me a note and I'll see to it that you get to read the book. Every Legion fan needs to, be they pre- or post-boot fans.

And was the one and only time we see the Supergirl statue.
I like too, the great role of Night Girl in this saga, but she don't stay with Rokk in the funeral.

Well said, Cobie.

I also love the opening scene in #284, with Chuck in the memorial hall, as he finalizes his decision to step down again.

I've always wanted to read this. Unfortunately, because it is the death of Superboy, back issue prices for this one are ridiculous. Or they were a few years ago anyway. Maybe with the decline of the speculation about 'key issues' and all that rubbish, maybe it is more affordable now, but I doubt it

It makes me angry to think about how greedy *censoreds* who speculate on so-called 'key issues' and treat sprocking price guides as if they were the bible make important issues like that one unaffordable to the real fans. *Grrr*. I want to read that issue because I'm a Legion fan, not because I want to hoard it in Mylar and sell it as an investment!!! AGGGH! mad That has been the *one* issue of Legion I have never been able to get, and I've always been a little sad about it. (hey, it's not that bad, it is only a comic book, but you know what I mean..)

I *was* going to download it in scan form on bit torrent, but Supernova (as it then was) withdrew that particular batch before I had a chance to get to it, (I only got up to the first half of the baxter series). Yes, I just logged on one day to see all the Legion scans were gone for no apparant reason. They never came back.

So I have always wanted to read this issue. But I guess I'll never have the chance. *sigh*.

Even apart from the magnificently told Paul Levitz story (extending over three DC titles and four issues), and Greg LaRocque's art for this, especially that stunning two-page final image ...

This cover painting by Bill Sienkiewicz is, to me -- with the silhouettes -- the best Superboy cover of them all, the best Dawnstar cover of them all, and, quite simply, the best Legion cover of them all.

If I'd had $1,000 to spare when the painting came up for eBay auction several years ago, I'd have bought it. Alas, alas.

The next best thing is, o'course, to find the issue. I did so with little trouble on eBay, three years ago, for about $12 for "LSH" v3 n37 and n38. They're not hard to find in that range, certainly under $20 for the pair, if you keep looking.

It *is* a brilliant cover. When I first read the Death of Superboy story a couple of years ago I remember thinking that the LSH should have been rebooted right then and there, at the natural conclusion of its continuity. Imagine the LSH reinvented by Levitz in 1987, instead of the sludge that followed.

Ah, hindsight.

The cover is abolutely magnificent. It just says it all right there...mood and everythng.

I did notice at my CBS that the issue they had in stock was $18 in the back issue bins (which prompted me to read my copy in the first place).

Tromium, I agree with you (though never thought of it before). The issue kind of reads as the natural conclusion to LSH continuity at that point...like a real 'end'. Even though I like TMK and the stories that followed, #38 *does* feel like a possible 'stop here' point when reading the whole run.

There are a few key issues that I think every Legion fan should read. Another that comes to mind was Legion #297 (?), the Cosmic Boy spotlight where he breaks from Legion code and goes after the people responsible for firebombing his family's neighborhood. It showed a side of Cos we had never seen before, and he used his powers as never before.

This is the panel that really did it for me. 30 years worth of Legion moments fluttered by in the blink of an eye, as Mon trembled with Clark in his hands.

Another Legion issue that did it for me was the very last pre-boot issue (can't remember if it was Legion or Legionnaires), where the universe was collapsing, and the adult Legion and their teenage counterparts clasped hands and faded into oblivion, leaving only the Founders. The first to join, the last to fade out. It was very emotional for me. Definitely the end of an era. I'm still a fan, but truly the Legion has never been quite the same for me since.

LSH 61. Those last 3 or 4 white pages hit me as hard as any illustrated page could have. frown

Agreed on all of those issues mentioned. I will admit to also getting teary at the most recent end of series when the Legion (clinging together in "L" formation with Mon at the crux), fades into the timestream leaving Shikari all alone.

this was a great cover.

the magic wars ending was the most emotional for me though, the white witch standing alone against the arch mage refusing to give up xerox.

also the mordru verse issue(s) after mon-el "kills" the time trapper. (after 5 year gap) a universe without the legion sucked.

oddly enough the last reboot was hard to take. especially with shikari being all alone again. i had really grown to like this "not so archie anymore legion" during coipel's run.

I had a similar reaction to the end of End of an Era, Superboy's death and the fadeout of the reboot team. I still also get all teary-eyed whenever I reread Legion Lost 12 and get to the part where Garth sacrifices himself. Poor, poor Garth...

Cobalt Kid, I fel strongly for that arc as well; in Italy we had it published on the main superman magazine of the time and then I managed to get the original issues. Very touching

Princess Crujectra and Invisible Brainiac, I think the sequence you mentioned is one of the most touching as well, and possibly my favorite one across all my collection: Also the Valor tie ins, after the DOA affaire have been quite nice; I already posted these scans several times but let's do it again...
