Hi Guys Hope you enjoy these various stages of the cover to #18 - the thumbnail is with the scans for #16 as you know Here's an initial sketch for the figures ...and my first pencils stage Here are the final pencils and the beginning of the inks being applied and here's the final version - just before I've used any white to hide lines that have gone into areas they shouldn't... clicking on these thumbnails should take you to larger versions of the scans. Thanks, as always to Nightcrawler for hosting them!

Amazing as always Barry! I love seeing the various stages of the process. In the first pencils, I wasn't sure if it was Jo or Garth between Brin and Supergirl. Keep up the fantastic work!

Gorgeous!!! you're art is so "on" from the earliest stages. i don't really see any "lines that go where they shouldn't". what do you use to ink with, Barry? it's so clean! have you ever tried digital inking with a wacom tablet? i've read that's how Brian Bolland does it. thanks for sharing so much mr. kitson.

I still say Barry draws THE best Kara all around. And I have to thank you for continuing to share these with us Barry. How many other artists take the time, for over a year, to share these kind of details with their fans on a message board they don't own? Not many if any at all. I'll always be grateful that you've taken the time for us.
Thanks!

Not only does Barry draw the best Kara, I think Barry draws the best Tinya too--and Tinya has long been my favorite DC heroine. I also think I prefer his Tasmia too, on par and possibly even surpassing Grell, Cockrum and Lightle, who I feel always drew her best.

Wow! Thanks! Definitely no thanks needed for my being here - you guys have been great - it's a pleasure to be sharing Legion World with you! To answer the art question - I ink about 75% with a brush, 20% quill pens and about 5% is done with a very very technical pen. There's no real set method I use though (those percentages are very rough guestimates) - I just try to use whatever I think will get the best results. Thanks again for the kind words about the cover!

Aren't two "homages" in a year a bit much? In fact, isn't a 17-month-old cover design a little too new to be "inspiring" this much "homage"?
Especially considering that this specific design leaves the cover with about 60% dead air.

Barry, all your Lady Legionnaires are --tssssss--HOT! Phantom Girl does look awesome. And your Kara looks like, well, Supergirl. Can you lobby the men upstairs at DC to adopt your version as canonical? The alternative -- an anorexic Barbie doll with a 4-foot tall torso -- just isn't an appropriate depiction, even for a comic book. In her own book, her torso is so long she's starting to look like Sneckie!
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I love that this positioning of the characters is being used the way it is. All the characters depicted look great, especially Shady and Tinya. Supergirl is lovely. Beautiful linework.

Barry,
AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING.
The best of the 3 "ring" designs thus far.
Can Kara seriously get any hotter? Dead spot on.
And all of the women look so feminine, yet so strong.
And Timber Wolf, now that is a mans man!
Thanks!

Don't mind me. I have nothing relevant to add --I'm just sitting here, staring happily.

Except for the narrow shoulders and skinny arms. Have you seen the animated Wolf image on the other thread. Those are shoulders. JK, I love this pic. Agree it's the best ring picture and that Barry draws the best Supergirl...which makes it hard not to want her. Amazing cover! And as a Brin fan...i like him getting a good spot on the cover!

Especially considering that this specific design leaves the cover with about 60% dead air. I don't really think it's a "homage" cover, since the layout is used to represent the factions within the Legion struggling for control. First we had the Brainy/Cos covers indicating the 2 sides of the first power struggle within the Legion. Now we have a third side in the struggle for control coming in the form of Supergirl. I'm sure there will be those in the Legion who are going to follow her every word because they worship her as a symbol of teenage rebellion and teens making a difference and all that the Legion stands for. Whether she likes it or not, people are going to push her into the power stuggle with Cos and Brainy by their actions. Thus the symbolic cover. Of course I could be wrong...

Thanks for all the kind words guys! I'm with Opusrph on the question as to whether it's an homage or not - I tend to think of it more as a 'riff' we're doing variations on - and there is a subtext to the positioning of characters etc. Glad you like the girls - I was happy with Tinya and Shady myself Thanks again for all the support and encouragement!
