Could the raw sex appeal of such a drawing have made these characters uber-popular to the extent that we'd be demanding their reappearance to this day? I think possibly so!

As long as Grell puts big honkin' sideburns on Devlin, I'm all for it.

I can picture a Grell version of either.
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

Remember that splash page when the Green Lantern force (or whatever it ended up being) took over her injured body right at the end of Giffen's art run? As much as I love the Keithster, I think either artist could have made that moment a little hotter.
The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.
Don't judge me!

I don't think a sketch by Mike Grell will be enough to make them so popular that we'd ask for the return of either Celeste, whom we never got to really know or - in my case - care about, nor TMK's answer to Jimmy Olsen with Reflecto's power. Devlin as a supporting character a la Jimmy Olsen would be ok but not as a Legionnaire in the classic Legion. He's better suited for the WaK Legion in either role. I'd love the sketch though!

I liked Devlin's shirt, though. Seriously, I'd wear it.

Yeah, that *was* a cool shirt.
I think Grell doing the back-up "Devlin O'Ryan, Legionnaire's Pal" for a few issues, complete with hot aliens all over the place, would have been enough to have sold this young man on the character (I already like him though).

Not sure about Cockrum/Grell version. Hard to imagine them out of those Giffen uniforms. I would love to see these characters again.
Celeste is an easier origin. Maybe Alan Scott's Starheart? But basically a GL.
Devlin? He's a young reporter secretly following the Legion on a mission and ZAP!!! He's got powers.

I've meant to reply to this thread for ages!
Absolutely, if Cockrum had drawn these characters in a minor scene back during his run, and then Grell drew them again in another little appearance, it would have propelled them to "Obscure Characters from Bit Parts in the 70's Who Deserve SUPERSTAR STATUS on LW NOW."
Grell had a way of making the characters look like fashion models. The girls are all super thin, but with curves! and the men are very handsome and muscular. Personally, his rendition of Quicksand, Calorie Queen, Charma and especially Laurel Kent have ALWAYS hung in my mind. His rendition of the actual Legion girls is even more impressive.
