Does anybody know if Dc has ever considered doing a graphic novel to Bridge the Gap so to speak between the Levitz Legion and the Gifbaum Legion?

I'm not sure they ever did.

The Mayfair DC Hero Game Legion role-playing supplement did some of that, though.

I thought the Mayfair supplement did a great job. At the time I bought it, I was new to the Legion -- and I thought that the supplement was summarizing events/stories/characters that had actually appeared in the books.

I was rather surprised to find out a little later that the "Gap" events were never shown in the books themselves...

That third Mayfair RPG sourcebook is closer to fan fiction than anything else, given how much was spun anew or never shown in the serial titles. The Bierbaums, though, were led around by supposedly favorite fan notions, especially in how they used and abused characters, so it's not at all surprising.

I would suppose whether or not it's a "great job" depends on what one sees as appropriate ends. On its own terms, telling its own stories, the Giffbaum inventiveness was often entertaining. In how this altered and twisted the earlier heritage of Legion characters, their work was -- for me and many other earlier readers -- utterly appalling.

Those coming anew to the Legion, though, wouldn't and shouldn't have been expected to share those ends as to character fidelity. It would've made a richer experience, for those who chose to do so, but it wasn't at all "required."

It's easier for some of us to simply consider everything between the Magic Wars and the major reboot as one big multi-title five-year Elseworlds project, anyway. Not so worthless as to dismiss as an utter nightmare ... but not the genuine Legion, either.

Greybird has a point, at least in this regard: my experience has been that those who enjoyed the 5YG era tended to have begure reading the Legion either at that time, or only shortly before. Those who did not like 5YG tend to be those who had already been reading the book for years in happened.

For myself, I would enjoy seeing "Black Dawn" written by the Bieerbaums and illustrated by either Steve Lightle and/or Greg Larocque.

Don "Get-A-Life-Boy" Saker has a great website that has a pretty plausible 5 Year Gap issue-by-issue synopsis. Go here to read it: http://www.readersadvice.com/lsh/levitz.html

There are even covers to a couple dozen issues.
Enjoy!

Oooh, I don't remember covers. That's new. Who drew them?

{[...] a pretty plausible 5 Year Gap issue-by-issue synopsis }

Well, plausible except for Issue 100, which is ...

a special, double-size issue with a die-cut, hologram-enhanced cover of 24-karat gold, polybagged with a complete set of 250 Legion trading cards, a Legion sweatsuit, a toy Legion cruiser, a real working Flight Ring, and a medallion which allows the bearer entry to an LSH meeting. Somehow, the writers manage to work in guest appearances by everyone who has ever been in a Legion comic. In celebration of the Legion's start in Adventure Comics, issue #100 is cover-priced at twelve cents.

... BUT I STILL WANT ONE!

I guess I'm the odd man out then. I had been reading the Legion for almost ten years when the TMK stories started, and I really enjoyed them.

But I can see how other fans wouldn't.

Grey,

I forgot about the overblown hype of the 100th issue. And I agree, I want one too!!

And I overstated a bit. It appears there are only about nine covers from the 60ish issues. According to the issue breakdown, the 5 year gap would be issues #64 - #125, including 5 annuals.

Not sure who did the artwork for the covers... some appear to be "built" from other issues, (for example, there is a Sensor Girl shot that appears to be by Lightle) while others are fan art.

My first LEGION issue was S/LSH # 205 in the mid-70s and I enjoyed 5YL for the most part.

That website detailing the fictional issues of the 5-Year Gap is GREAT-- I read it all in one sitting once. The writer even took the care to use the established events in the previously mentioned TMK MAYFAIR sourcebook.

Good stuff...
