As always, we'll start with the soliciation:

THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #11

Written by Mark Waid; Art by Barry Kitson & Mick Gray; Cover by Kitson

On the eve of galactic destruction, with the dream of a United Planets dissolving into hopelessness, only an all-out brawl between the Legion and the agents of Terror Firma can halt the coming invasion —-provided a key player in the war finds within herself an unexpected power!

as well as a link to the cover...

The issue contains an unsolicited back-up story (written by Waid) pencilled by Dale Eaglesham who most recently worked on Villains United.

It features a story of some of the survivors around the destroyed HQ.

My copy of #11 arrived in time for lunch today.

It was an interesting issue - not a lot got resolved, but some very thought-provoking things happened.

Some short points:

- the team on Dormir seems to have basically succeeded in what they were there for; the team in Ttrxl somewhat less so
- if they don't trust Invisible Kid after what happens this issue (and, I presume, next), they never will
- Brainy needs to lie down with a cold cloth on his forehead
- Brin is featured (along with everyone else) on the silhouettes page, but there's no sign of him in the story
- it becomes obvious why Earth, Dormir and Ttrxl are the important worlds, but I still don't see what Invisible Kid's plan is
- nothing new with Projectra. The whole team on Terror Firma's homeworld only gets a couple of pages of screen time
- there's a second story in the back of #11 that I am, quite frankly, not sure what to make of. Is it in continuity or not? I hate having to worry about stuff like that. And what exactly is Waid saying to us here?
- I have no idea how this can be wrapped up in one or two more issues

Unless I'm missing something, no key female player "finds within herself an unexpected power" - not in this issue anyway.

Is the back up a sign that Kitson wasn't able to make the deadline? While it's an interesting gimmick (old DC comic covers being mimicked by the young L* wannabes as they escape the rubble) It's sort of throwaway - the characters aren't really IDed, and it seems to be pretty meta-oriented - directed to LSH fans who may not be happy with the revamp and not supporting this version ("You can either make sure these victims have a future, or you can stay bogged down in the past.").

The Brainy moments in the main story are pretty intense though...

It was weird wasn't it? On the one hand the backup could be a veiled critique of the fans.

But I'm pretty sure it's a political statement about the hollowness of idealism and historic symbolism without action to make the present better. He's echoing readers who've been calling these Legionnaires a bunch of spoiled, whiny children and telling us that we've turned the corner.

Brainy sure looked like he could be daffy enough to build a Dream Girl Robot on that final page.

I think she's dead. Invisible Kid thinks she's dead. Brainiac 5 seems to have the notion that there's something that can be done about it, though. Put whatever weight on that you like.

Oh, I forgot to mention: Theena's in this issue.

Cuckooo! Cuckooo! The Legion isn't the Legion unless Brainiac53 is Cuckooo

Brainy is daffy, He puts his shield emitter on her body and turns it on. Lyle asks him to help save millions of lives from Elysion. Brainy refuses, claiming he can out-think death. He claims to have a plan to save her. Lyle leads some legionnaires off.

Brainy stares at the body, Theena presses on his plan, the situation downtown is desperate. He says he's not sure yet, because he's not smart enough.

In short Brainiac53 is nuts and DreamGirl3 is "dead" for now.

I don't think we were promised we'd see someone find her unexpected power but that someone had to realize it. Perhaps Saturn Girl will realize a power now that she is psychically mute.

At which time it may be in the hands of Calamity King.

This was my least favorite issue that Barry actually drew. It advanced the plot very little, if at all. The storytelling was rather more decompressed than usual; I felt that a number of pages were just wasted.

Things I did like included Lyle's speech at the beginning, Imra being mute, and the idea of inklings growing up into concepts.

Sir Tim, I'm with you. I snuck out at lunch and grabbed a copy from a new CBS nearby and was disappointed to have wasted my lunch time driving in traffic for this issue. While Barry's work was great I don't feel like this issue really provide much at that. Nothing that couldn't have been squeezed into a regular issue in fewer pages. It also felt, to me, like it jumped around too much and we missed some of what was being said. Like we walked into the room having missed half of a speech. A big letdown after last issue.

I actually liked this issue about as much as I liked the last one. It served its purpose for me to wait on the edge of my seat for #12. It provided the necessary details I was wondering while further the plot.

I'm surprised people still think Dream Girl will remain dead. It's obvious to me that she plays a pivitol role in the story and that Brainy will restore her. It's all there laid out for us with maybe a little reference to #7 sprinkled in.

I also thought the second story was pretty cool and only wished that Waid would take two seconds to name these people. I hate it when characters aren't named!

Agent Skelter seemed like a great and menacing character and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him. I'd also like one of the inklings to become a Legionnaire named Quislet. smile

I did miss the silhouettes, for obvious reasons. laugh
