Obviously I'm more than a little behind, but exactly WHEN did Bounty (Dawnstar) first appear? I know Dawnstar's first appy was in Superboy/Legion #226, but how about her as Bounty.

It's Dawnstar, who *ahem!!* happened to be possessed by a malevolent spirit called "Bounty." And who was awake and witnessing the ordeal (and her mutilation) until the spirit left her.

Dawnstar's last reference (she didn't appear) in the original Legion continuity was by name in "LSH" v4 n3, late 1989. The Legionverse had a mini-double-reboot with issues 4 and 5, and new characters showed up in issue 6 and later -- including Valor (formerly Mon-el), Celeste Rockfish, and her investigator-for-hire associate, Bounty.

I'd advise not wasting your time looking for her in sporadic appearances between issues 6 and 36. The character was a botch and a travesty, coming ultimately from Giffen's hatred for the Dawnstar character, though conceived by Al Gordon. Go back to "SLSH" 226 and later.

Sure, I'm biased  ... but "Bounty" is no reason to even try to mine value from the TMK era.

What basis do you have for saying this? Did Giffen (or someone else) state this specifically, or are you inferring it from what Giffen did with Dawnstar? Just curious...

I'm not sure if Giffen used the word "hate", but he is not shy about going on record re: Legionnaires he dislikes. Dawnstar and Tellus are the 2 I can recall.

I always thought that it was an intersting idea for the character for a finite period of time. Obvuiously, Dawnstar was exorcised of the Bounty entity, but I never felt her journey towards healing was completed before Zero Hour came in and whiped out that continuity (then again, there were a lot of dangelling plot threads).
I think the route her character was on after the EarthWar would have been made her a stronger character in the end, but it was cut short.

I find rather interesting the Bounty is the only pre-Zero-Hour Legion member appearing in the DC Encyclopedia.

Wasn't there another Bounty character in Legion history? I was wondering how TMK missed out on the opportunity to make a link.

That is bizarre, Paris. I guess the others were "updated" but the lack of a postboot Dawnstar meant she got an old reference.

Yes, there was a male Bounty in the 'Composite Legionaire" story somewhere around 232 or 233.

Oh yeah, the dude with big hair, grimaced all the time and kept trying to shoot Legionnaires, right? Joe Staton art, the worst of the Composite Legionnaire stories.

Giffen spoke scathingly of the Dawnstar character in a Harry Broertjies interview from 1988, several months before he redesigned the outfits, a year and a half before the TMK re-working was implemented. I've quoted it more than once here. If I find another on-line link for it (I'm not posting it) I'll add it to this thread.

Giffen also half-heartedly backed away somewhat from his position in his interview in the Legion Companion, suggesting that others were responsible for her mutilation, but I didn't find it convincing. All choices from that era went by him, whether he, Gordon, or the Bierbaums initiated them.

The earlier "Bounty" in the Composite Legionnaire story was said (indirectly) to have a Starhavenite father, though he had none of the physical abilities or wings. Nothing was suggested in the later storyline about any connection to the earlier one.

I always thought that the original Bounty was possessed like Dawnstar was. The spirit moved on after he either died or was incarcerated because he was too weak. That was always my natural assumption.

I liked Bounty, and this is coming from a hardcore Dawnstar fan. I always thought Dawnstar had that "mercenary" quality, especially since she was a bounty hunter before she joined the Legion. While I didn't like the removal of her wings, the Bounty storyline had potential that was unfortunately erased by ZH. I would have like to have seen Dawnstar recover from her ordeal a grimmer and more warrior-like, and engage Bounty in an "epic" battle.

I liked Bounty and the mystery of she was or wasn't Dawnstar kept me interested. Bounty fit the 5YG. It's done...she's done. Give me Dawnstar back! wink But I did like Shikari as well. doh!

I thought so, too.
