So far with a few exceptions I have been able to fill out a pretty comprehensive collection from Vol 1 - present, A decent chunk of Superboy and an issue of Adventure paying mostly 10 cents to a $1 with a few around $3 and $4. I've been really lucky but I think I am reaching the end of what I can find for that price. I am going to keep trying because the joy of finding a 20 cent issue of Adventure from ten years before I was born is so much more fun than paying what it's really worth, but I want to know what's reasonable.
So what would you pay for an average issue of:
Adventure Superboy Vol 1 Vol 2 5yl Legionaires 90's Legion The Legion Who's Who
Also keep in mind I am a reader not a collector. I'll take any condition as long as I can read it.

I'd say the best bet on the Adventure Era, especially if you just want to read the stories, is actually just to buy the Archives (or Showcase, if you don't mind the black and white). You can usually get the Archives for thirty-something, and they've got about ten issues each. While it's not inconceivable that you could put together the same collection of issues for $3 each, it's certainly not going to be easy. The Archives are relatively cheap and convenient.

maybe but I was able to secure An Adventure Comics reprint from 1971 with 5 legion stories revolving around lightning lads death and resurrection for a $1 you can see how addicting it can be.
Boy LL had a bad run of things with his death, losing his arm, hooking up with Starfinger...

I'm dead cheap. Fifty cents for just about anything. Maybe a little more for Adventure stuff with good covers. HOWEVER I would shell out for Superboy's Legion, the Elseworlds 2-parter. (Issue 2 eludes me.) I got the 7-issue WWLSH for 50 cents apiece, but I probably would have paid a little more. Reference material is good!

Well, I paid top dollar for the Archives, Legion Lost and Superboy's Legion (and was happy to have them) but wouldn't expect to find the early pamphlets for any price I'd be willing to pay. Certainly anything from 5YL onwards - $1, unless I was really keen on reading it; most of the post boot seems to go for 50 cents. There just seems to be a fair bit of it around. I don't think you'll find issues like Death of Superboy for cheap in any condition - but if you do - what a thrill! Happy hunting!
You might want to check the on-line/mail order stores to get an idea of prices. Although you'll probably find books cheaper at conventions, it might give you an idea of the upper limits or what you'd be willing to pay for a given issue.
I sometimes wonder why I pay cover price for books, when waiting a year would probably reduce my costs by at least 50%. Gotta read them now, though.

I think you can generally find anything after Adventure for at least $3-5, with some exceptions (Death of Superboy, etc.). When I filled in my back issues, the range would sometimes go to $8 or $10, but not much higher.
For the 20 years worth of stories, you could most likely go cheaper than $3 for almost any issue, and a lot of the time as low as 50 cents.
I'd follow the reccomendations and use the Archives for the Adventure issues. You'd be hard-pressed to find them for cheaper than $25 no matter what the quality.

I have never really understood the reasoning behind the outrageous costs I've seen for the Legion Lost mini. Forget buying it on eBay for most full run lots start off around $25 (which is understandable considering about $2 a book for 12) but they eventually go out at around $50 or more. A little too high price for me. And why DC doesn't reprint it in TPB is beyond me. I've had to get the mini piecemeal over the years and I need only three more issues to have the complete run. Other than that, I'll go for either the Archives or Showcase. I'm not neccessarily a collector, I just want to read these classic stories. More recent Legion issues, I will get from either dealers or eBay. If it's ebay, I look for only bulk lots. I normally start off with a $25 price for such lots but when you get 20+ books or more for that price, it's worth it I think. I got a decent chunk of the Baxter Legion series like that and that was was money well spent.

The problem with the last showcase was that in those days everyone had the same haircut. You have to really examine the collars to figure out who is who.
I love what I've found of the legion lost mini. It's a little bright spot in an otherwise blah continuity. Very good sci-fi. That probably explains the cost

Legion Lost wasn't a great seller when it came out, so part of the price just comes from scarcity of issues.

I'd say that's a pretty sweet find. I've always had trouble finding that issue--the only time I ever found it was when I bought it!
