Putting aside the dear little goats for a wee moment ... I KNEW there was an earlier spoiler for this issue, and I just found it again. It comes from the DCU presentation at WonderCon San Francisco in February. You can link to the slideshow HERE . "In June's issue 7, the team learns that the United Planets is secretly negotiating with a force poised for intergalactic invasion." If that's the "chilling secret", then the problem goes far beyond power cliques. Think of the dispute between Sun Boy and Cosmic Boy over Lallor, magnified by twenty. Whoever the "key Legionnaire" is, he or she is probably at the very center of the controversy. Perhaps the "removal" refers to Cosmic Boy himself. If he supports the U.P.'s attempts to avert war, he leaves himself open to accusations of weakness and "U.P. servitude". The most radical anti-U.P. members might even view the invasion force as the lesser of two evils, causing the government to treat the LSH as a threat. Waid seems to love historical parallels. This one calls to mind Neville Chamberlain's hopeless attempts to negotiate with Hitler in the late 1930s. You may resume the goat discussion now.

Reading the description that's what ran through my mind as well - Churchill vs. Chamberlain. Though if the intent is for Cos to be the Chamberlain character, I think that ship sailed when he gave the go ahead for the action on Lallor. I wonder if the UP gov't as a whole is the Chamberlain surrogate and the revelation just serves to bind the rival factions in the Legion. Or Brainy could just use Cos' ties to the UP to paint him as a sympathizer and further his own (Brainy's) agenda. I suppose that would be in character for this Brainy, but it wouldn't be one of my favorite character's prouder moments. Originally posted by Tromium: You may resume the goat discussion now. [/QB] Well, they're not entirely unrelated. Could be that the invaders look like goats, and they've already established a beachhead with Cos' unwitting aid. That'd sure give Brainy's faction a boost.

Jeepers! Too bad Waid is refusing to use Universo... just stick a monocle on one of those goats and it would be perfect!

Or those goats could actually be Proties ala the herd that the TMK Kid Quantum was herding while he hid as the Soul of Antares.
They're the ones (in "consolidated" form) hiding in shadow after Brainy spoke with Cosmic Boy...sneaky, sneaky!

Hi Guys Glad you like the cover! Sorry to have been quiet for while...I'll aim to get the pencil and ink scans to Nightcrawler ASAP so you can have a look at those! I don't think the story has many similarities to anything that's gone before... I'm sure you'll be having more informed guesses about what's coming after you've seen issue #5! ...and you'll also know who those boots belonged to!

HEY!!! I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet - DREAM GIRL'S HAIR IS PLATINUM AGAIN!!! YES! That's a step in the right direction. Now if only we could get Cosmic Boy's hair back to black, Sun Boy's hair back to red, Shadow Lass' skin back to blue and the rest of the colours brightened up a bit we'd finally have a colourist to match Barry's artist!

I think someone did. <blacknationalist mode> But why you so concerned, "Blacula?" Shouldn't you be, as a matter of principle AGAINST the increased Whitey-fication of the Legion universe? Or have you, perhaps, been mentally colonized by the oppressive race, mah brutha? Think, mah bruvah -- the blond-haired, blue-eyed so-called "Dream" Girl is the ultimate example of the Man's strategy to posit himself as the Master Race!!!!!!! And lookit that -- you even got a WHITE dog as your avatar. All other fellow Black Legion Worlders, mourn as another black man falls to Whitey's schemes... </blacknationalist mode> I'm just playin'. But seriously -- what if DREAMY had gotten the reimagined Star Boy treatment? That'd have been opening a can of "DUNE"-sized worms, yo...!

You could probably pull a lot of sociological theories out of the choice of Star Boy for the new black legionnaire. Why the cute, likeable but somewhat incompetent one?
Black Dream Girl would be neat, but it would change the tenor of her character. North American audiences have lots of subconscious cultural connotations to different skin colors, and it changes the way a character is percieved.
Dream Girl's pale skin and hair explicitly recall misty skies and insubstantiality. You could maybe get that with a black character with pale eyes and hair, but do we really want her to look like Storm? Also, a black version would seem more grounded, practical. She'd probably come off as more 'spiritual and wise', since that's the female version of the 'mystical black person' stereotype. She would, however, appear a lot more tough and capable.
Why not a black (or hispanic, asian, something) version of one of the founders? All three of them are blue-eyed caucasians. Would that change their characters too much for the fandom to accept?

Actually, that photo makes you look remarkably like a light-skinned black man in my eyes. It's so hard to see your hair texture against the dark tree color...looks like an afro.
But of course, such a photo would not deter Black Nationalistâ„¢ in the slightest:
"So now 'Blacula' shows his true imperialist colors, having attempted to co-opt one of the few Black pop cultural icons in a typical White liberal attempt to be down with the struggle! And we now see that his concerns about the so-called Dream Girl's hair color is OBVIOUSLY tied into his whole race's desire to keep its gene pool 'uncontaminated' by the 'CHROMA' somes of the original, melaninated peoples of Nubia!!!!11!!!"
Black nationalists would be funny if they weren't so blinded with bitterness.

Actually, I used to be black but strangely at around the same time Thom Kallor turned black I turned white! Damn that Mark Waid! What kind of powerful magics was he prepared to use to make the Legion DC's Number #1 book?!? Maybe I should change my screen-name to 'White Devil' now? ... By the way, I tried to grow the white version of an afro - what would that be called anyway? a 'ho(nkey)fro' - when I was a teenager! All photographic evidence of that period in my life has since been destroyed!

On a more serious note, let's look at the "factions" suggested by these Legion covers. B5's REVOLUTIONARIES Brainy: Wants nothing less than to run the U.P. Ultra Boy: gangbanger for justice? E-Lad: Senses change on the horizon, and B5's the one motivating it. Karate Kid: Another man of action, he thinks the LSH should usher in change as well. Cham: we know Cham's passionate enough about matters of faith to get into a fistfight. But who knows what Cham's stake in the LSH really is? (note the gender-neutral nature of this entry) Princess Projectra, Phantom Girl: Thus far, both are mysteries in terms of their take on the Legion's purpose. But we know that PG is a brawler, being among the ones on the front lines at Xanthu. Cos: not really part of B5's faction? Not anymore, perhaps? Or is the roster seen on LSH #1's cover a figment of B5's imagination? I'll review COS' REFORMERS after I've had a chance to review #4 tonight or tomorrow.

lol, but have you ever heard of black man's kryptonite? Yes it's from the 31st century and Starboy is a prime example. (love that post you had a while ago with your revisioned members)

I agree with Rurouni KJS why those certain members are part of Brainy's team. Add also that E-Lad is a bit of a snob as is Princess. Which I always saw some of the members as snobs. Heck imagine a team of super powered teenagers...ego trip big time.
Regarding the UP revelation? I had guessed that already that they are somehow behind this war...or have their hands in it for a reason.
What I wonder is will this war bring the Legion and SPs(the true heroes of this book) together? Imagine the SP liason? Peter Gyrich of the 31st century? But I am seriously hoping for Dvron, Gigi and Svaughn(sp?) to show up at some point!

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Tromium: [QB] Hold yer horses! That's Cosmic Boy on the extreme left of the "Brainy" cover, according to Barry (who also identified KK on the right). I makes no sense for Cos to be on Brainy's team, so I'm not so sure this clique theory holds water. Interesting, though, that Imra is in the "Cos" position on the #7 cover. I suspect Barry is teasing us a bit ... a lot, actually.
regarding the position of Cos on Brainy's cover. from Latin times doesn't left or left hand translate to sinister. so just maybe, having cos on the left in that cover indicates his opposition to Brainy.
another example. it appears that Saturn girl is on both covers. for Cos' cover she is on his right hand. but on the Brainy's cover, she is on his left. I will take my no-prize now thank you.

And welcome to Legion World! Glad you made it over from the DCMB. The next week or two should be interesting as the spoilers and reviews come in for issue #5.
