I'm trying to figure out my binding plan and I need to know which Zero Hour issues are essential and or which Valor issues are involved in crossovers

This is the Zero Hour order:

Legionnaires 17
Valor 22
Legion of Super-Heroes (V4) 60
L.E.G.I.O.N. ‘94 69
Showcase 94 8
Showcase 94 9
Zero hour 4
L.E.G.I.O.N. ‘94 70
Legionnaires 18
Valor 23
Superboy (V3) 8
Zero hour 3
Zero hour 2
Legion of Super-Heroes (V4) 61
Zero hour 1
Zero hour 0

The Showcase issues have no Legion content but set the scene for Zero hour (as opposed to End of an Era)

Zero Hour 4 only features the Time Trapper - no Legionnaires.

I've never even heard of those LSH pages in Dark Knight Strikes Back before. And was Miller phoning in the art? What's up with that?

That thing was a train wreck overall...some decent ideas that seemed to go horribly wrong. At least that was my impression when I read it years ago.

Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

To be quiet honest, aside from Batman Year One and Carrie Kelly, I find Miller is very overrated.

I'm in need of a species of beings from the Legion comics that is likely to be in favor of specie cleansing. Ideally the species (or individual) would be a member of the U.P. but if they are not I can work around it as well. Another good alternative would be a established villain who might be interested in specie cleansing.

A group comes to mind, for me, before a species. That group is the White Triangle from the reboot. A wing of the White Triangle was made up of the race Daxamites - supposedly they were racist because their lead poisoning made them fearful of leaving their home world.

The White Triangle was a loose affiliation of anti-alien groups on a variety of planets, with the Daxamites ultimately manipulating the rest. It's kind of an interesting concept, actually: "Rascists of the world (universe) unite!"

The plot I started working on involves space terrorists that are hired to clean out racially impure species throughout the U.P.

The ones that they would try and discourage and establish bad relations with are those who appear less human than most of the species in the galaxy. This isn't written in stone but is where I was headed. A PC belongs to such a race and they attempted to eliminate her. They also poisoned another U.P. Ambassador and I was intending on him having non-human features as well. So I'm looking for a suitable bad guy who would have hired the space terrorists to do the dirty work.

I have a question...does anyone know why "Of Leaders and Lovers" from LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES V2 #291 was redrawn from Howard Bender and Rodin Rodrigues art to Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt art for the GREAT DARKNESS SAGA TPB?

Was it a royalty issue of some sort? Bender's work appeared from LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES V2 #300 into the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES 1050 YEARS OF THE FUTURE TPB in 2008, so does that mean the issue was with Rodrigues or something else?

I've a question about Legion annuals. Here's what I have....

The Legion of Super-Heroes #1 1982
The Legion of Super-Heroes #2 1983
The Legion of Super-Heroes #3 1984

These issues belong to the original legion, did they publish additional ones after issue #3?

I also have.....
Legion of Super-Heroes #3 1987, I am assuming that this is also the original Legion due to the year, why is it listed as #3?

I also have....
Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes #5, 1987
Appears to be original Legion as well.

I also have.....
Legion of Super-Heroes #1, 1990, is this the original Legion or the 2nd boot? Apparently Phantom Girl dies at the end.

I also have....
Legion of Super-Heroes #2, 1991, The Legends of Valor.

I also have....
Legion of Super-Heroes #3, 1992, The all new feral Timber Wolf, a reboot annual?

I also have....
Legion of Super-Heroes #4, 1993, Bloodlines Earthplague. Is this reboot as well?

I also have....
Legion of Super-Heroes #7, 1996.
Is this a reboot comic?

Can somone please tell me which comics go with the original Legion and those with the reboot Legion. Also which Annuals I'm missing and which Legion they are for as well.

These are not annuals, but how many Secret Files and Origins were printed that included the original Legion and how many for the re-boot Legion?

Okay, so your first three annuals go with LSH volume 2, which later becomes Tales of the LSH. So, your TotLSH Annual #5 is part of the same series as the first 3.

Your '87 #3 goes with LSH, volume 3, so it's a different series.

The 90s annuals all go with LSH, volume 4. Up until 1995, they concern the 5 years later team. Beginning in '95, they feature the reboot team.

None for the original Legion as they were long gone before these became in vogue. Three of them were made for the reboot Legion:

Legion: Secret Files (1998)
Legion of Super-Heroes Secret Files (1999)
Legion Secret Files 3003 (2004)

And for the Annuals -

Original Legion -

V2: #1 1982, #2 1983 #3 1984, (as Tales... & are reprints) #4 1986 & #5 1987

V3: #1 1985, #2 1986, #3 1987 & #4 1988

V4: #1 1990, #2 1991, #3 1992, #4 1993 & #5 1994

Reboot -

V4: #6 1995 & #7 1996

Legionnaires Annual #1 1994, #2 1995 & #3 1996

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 1982 - the very 1st annual; original Legion.

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #2 1983 - wedding of Projectra/Karate Kid, but most of the story involves some trapped in ancient Earth. original Legion.

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #3 1984 - attempt to revive Mordru. original Legion.

then the numbering both starts over to line up with the new monthly series (vol 3 ran #s 1-61 in the mid-late 80s, with vol. 2 (259-313) changing names to Tales of the Legion (314-354ish, becoming reprints around 326)

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 1985 - "Who Shot Laurel Kent?" original Legion. Reprinted the following year as Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #4 - 1986 - a continuation of the numbering of the 1st three annuals

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #2 1986 - Validus and Darkseid's curse. original Legion. Reprinted the following year as Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #5 - 1987

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #3 1987 - the new Legion of Substitute Heroes. original Legion.

The Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #4 1988 - Starfinger. original Legion.

then the numbering restarts to align with monthly volume 4, which some people consider original Legion, but other do not. It is generally not called a reboot, though; it is often referred to as 5YL (five years later, an era that was published from roughly late 1989 to August 1994):

Legion of Super-Heroes annual #1, 1990, Ultra Boy's history, culminating in the seeming death of Tinya. 5YL continuity, although set as a revision to original Legion stories.

Legion of Super-Heroes #2, annual 1991, The Legends of Valor. 5YL continuity, although set as a revision to original Legion stories.

Legion of Super-Heroes annual #3, 1992, The all new feral Timber Wolf. 5YL.

Legion of Super-Heroes annual #4, 1993, Bloodlines Earthplague. Still 5YL, not reboot Often considered the worst Legion story ever published.

Legion of Super-Heroes annual #5, 1994. Elseworlds (a wizard of oz homage). 5YL.

Legionnaires Annual #1, 1994. Elseworlds (Arthurian homage). (not really 5YL or Reboot; uses styles used in both, but takes place off on its own)

After these comes the Reboot (Sept 1994)

Legion of Super-Heroes annual #6, 1995. Year One; Shvaugn reviews the origins of three Legionnaires. Reboot.

Legionnaires Annual #2, 1995. Year One; culmination of major story arc running through both LSH vol 4 and Legionnaires series. Reboot.

Legion of Super-Heroes annual #6, 1996. Legends of the Dead Earth .In the distant future, Wildfire runs a new Legion. Reboot.

Legionnaires Annual #3, 1996. Legends of the Dead Earth. XS is lost in time, trying to return to the 2990s. Reboot.

another annual of note:

Supergirl Annual 2, 1997. Pulp Heroes/Young Romance theme. Guest-stars Reboot Legionnaires stuck in the 20th century, especially Brainiac 5 (cover appearance as well)

Hey, thanks so much, I appreciate both of you posting, clears it up for me. Guess I'm missing quite a few Annuals. Bummer. Maybe I'll find them at the comic convention tomorrow.

"Legion of Super-Heroes annual #1, 1990, Ultra Boy's history, culminating in the seeming death of Tinya. 5YL continuity, although set as a revision to original Legion stories."

This part I don't follow very well though. The 5YL continuity was....What the Legion was doing during the 5 year gap, right?

Does the annual take place during the gap or afterwards? Does the original Phantom Girl appear in any stories afterwards or was she dead as in very dead? This is the original Phantom Girl were talking about right?

The regular 5YL monthly series took place after a 5-year gap; a five full years were skipped over between vol. 3 #63 and the next published issue, vol.4 #1.

The 1st two annuals take place mostly before the gap; Tinya's disappearance was very early in the gap.

we only occasionally got a glimpse of what transpired during those 5 years. Tinya vanishing was one of those rare glimpses.

The first two annuals of that run (Ultra Boy and Valor) take place more during classic Legion times, but adding modifications to the timeline made to satisfy the Superman editors (who wanted no trace of Superboy or Supergirl, or the name Mon-El). This was done in-story by Glorith replacing the Time Trapper in Legion continuity - with others changes as a result.

with the Ultra Boy story, we get more backstory on his origins than we've usually seen, and the story ties together various threads that UB was involved with over the years (especially in the Adventure Comics era). Jo and Marla seeking to find Valor replaces their mission to discover Superboy's secret identity in Superboy #98 (Jo's 1st appearance). The story of Jo faking going bad comes from the #310s of Adventure (I forget which issue). The early strategies against Mordru were new, but in Mordru's 1st appearance (Adventure #369, I think) we are led to believe he and the Legion have a history already, prior to his captivity (known to everyone but Shadow Lass, then a newbie).

The writers opted to use the changed continuity to tie together things that hadn't totally fit, as well, like the integration of Brainy's insanity and the framing of Jo for An Ryd's murder (vol. 2 # 238, or thereabouts) to outside forces (Glorith).

The battle with Glorith with Valor, Laurel, Imra, Querl, Lu and Rond corresponds to vol. 3, #50, when all of those except Laurel) took on the Time Trapper.

So the Annual #1 was the first glimpse at how Legion fans of 1990 were seeing some of the changes made to pre-existing Legion history.

The engagement and then disappearance of Tinya had been hinted at, but not shown before. Tinya's disappearance.presumed death had already been mentioned in vol. 4 #2 of the monthly, and the time-manipulations hinted at in #3.

Readers of the book L.E.G.I.O.N. at that same time (precursor of (R.E.B.E.L.S.) were led to believe that the character of Phase was actually Tinya lost in time, but with her memory erased.

In 1994, Jo learns that Tinya may be lost in time, not dead, and he tracks down Phase, right before Zero Hour. He discovers it was actually Tinya's identical twin cousin (so under the Patty Duke rule, she presumably had a British accent wink ). During End of an Era, Jo and Tinya are briefly reunited.

But it gets weirder.

During the Reboot, we find out that Phase actually is Tinya - sort of. In the Reboot, Tinya is killed off, but returns as an intangeable phantom only Jo, her mom and Imra can see. Then later the others get to see her. When they meet Phase in the 20th Century, they find out that Reboot Tinya's dad is actually a Carggite, and so Tinya the Legionnaire has three bodies, too. Dad sold two of them into slavery to pay off his gambling debts, so she grew up alone. Phase Tinya grew up working in casinos, but somehow wound up in the past. The two merged into one, so Tinya had her body back for the rest of the Reboot; the 3rd body was never revealed.

So readers were initially led to believe Phase was original PG, then they were led to believe she wasn't. Then she turned out to be part of Reboot Tinya.

In 5YL, we see original Tinya towards the very end, but we also see a younger Tinya as part of the SW6 Legion, a version of the Adventure Comics Legion 17 years younger than the other Legion. This Legion then takes new names/costumes and originates the Legionnaires series pre-Zero Hour;many of these style changes are kept into the new Reboot era.

The SW6 Legion appeared in the shadows after the lunar explosion in vol.4 #19, but we didn't really see them until the final page of #24. They appeared frequently #25 through #41, after which they moved over to the new Legionnaires book.

there. simple, yes? wink

I forgot: with the SW6 Legion, the intent was to make readers wonder which was the real Legion, and which were the clones (there were lts of clues around that the Legion had been cloned - building upon bits of stories over the years and tying them together). As intended, the older Legion were going to be the clones, but then DC changed its mind and they were both real Legions all along, just from a splitting of timelines.

I just always assumed that since it was the only chapter of the Great Darkness that was not by that team, they redid it for consistency...

Actually, that's not true. The opening sequence is by Broderick and Curt Swan and others provided the art for the Annual that is included.
