Lemire mentioned that He really enjoyed writing Beth, which he didn't expect, but, honestly, she just seemed kind of bland to me in this issue. I do have fond memories of her and Rick's first appearance back in the day, though, so she's a character I want to like.

Interesting. I had a similar experience, years ago, the first time I wrote... ...Imra Ardeen in one of my Legion fics. Since then, I'm a fan of hers. Beth and Rick are characters I associate with the decline of Infinity Inc, but I certainly respect your opinion.

I agree that the Crisis crossover issues of II, much like those of A-SS, were definitely signaling a decline, before the massive drop-off in quality post-Crisis, but as a kid, my reaction was excitement that my two favorite JSAers were finally getting legacies (even if their costumes were iffy), so I kind of have to root for them

Fair enough, EDE.
I can certainly sympathize. There are certain other teams and characters I feel about that way.

Well, I'm finally caught up with JSA. I ordered issue 5 a little while ago. I should have my copy by Saturday at the latest.
I'd forgotten how much fun it is to follow a monthly series.

It's nice to have a JSA series that is actually coming out monthly!

Just read #5 and it may be the best issue yet! Lots of moving pieces leading up to what seems like it's going to be an epic battle starting next issue!

Can't really add much, except that I agree 100 percent. Okay, maybe a couple things: That double splash page of Surtur advancing towards the tower of fate is awesome! Also, I came onto the Johns JSA long after it had peaked, like at the beginning of 2005, and the climax to the time-travel battle against Per Degaton. So maybe I'm inclined to enjoy the Lemire relaunch more, since it's new and fresh. And having said that, it has everything I remember liking about the Johns run, and none of the things I disliked. Next issue comes out right around my birthday. I'm chuffed!

Really not sure how to feel about JSA #6. Uh-oh! Well, my copy should be arriving soon. Let's wait and see what my takeaway is. Forewarned, and all that!

That was even worse than I was afraid it would be. Beyond the most obvious downer, the death of Wildcat (which, these days, it's hard not to be cynical about,) there's something wonky about the issue as a whole, which makes me wonder if Lemire's original script was put through the editorial shredder. At the very least, the storyline is taking way too long to be resolved (six issues should have been plenty, at least for the A-Plot.) I guess it's just as well that there's a new Legion series on its way, because I am definitely not following JSA anymore (I'll still follow the trades, if my library gets them in, but the only way I'll go back to buying it is if there's a turnaround in quality back to the level of issues 3, 4, and 5.)

Yeah, The massive fight that was setup at the end of last issue was really underwhelming. I'm not that bothered by the death per se, but the way it was executed was really weak. It would be one thing if Ted sacrificed himself in protecting Khalid, but to get stabbed in the back during a moment of relative calm really did the character a disservice. Yolanda killing some random Kobra mook just feels like it's there to replicate some of her arc from the Stargirl tv series. The fact that we haven't had any interaction between her and her godfather/mentor Ted in this series kind of deflates whatever impact his death should have on her as well.
I think the storyline is supposed to be 10-12 issues. It's been moving a bit slow all along for my tastes, but there's been enough moving bits each advancing a little bit each issue that I've generally been forgiving of that. I think Lemire's trying to go for something of the scope of the Generations Saga that opened up II, but it's nowhere near the consistent awesomeness of that storyline. i'm hoping this issue is just a bit of a fluke, and it rights itself next issue. There's a GA flashback tale issue after next that I'm really looking forward to. So, we'll see...

Thanks for the info, EDE. Sounds to me like Lemire may have set the bar too high for himself. 10 to 12 issues is too many these days, unless the creators and editors are all on the same page and really know what they're doing. I agree 100 percent that the battle against Surtur was an outright dud. As for Yolanda, the only positive thing I can say is that at least she doesn't talk in that stupid accent anymore; also, I never watched Stargirl or any other live-action superhero shows, so I can't make any comparison. The GA flashback, OTOH, is undeniably intriguing. I'll wait and see what you and others comment about it.
