It was a small comic publisher in the early -1970s founded by two former Marvel employees. The character of Hell- Rider was published by them later to inspire the motorcycle riding version of Ghost Rider....

Their big thing was a series of B&W horror magazine, competing directly with Jim Warren (CREEPY, EERIE, VAMPIRELLA, etc.).

A guy named Geoge E. Warner has done a massive blog dedicated to Skywald... I can't remember the name of it, but it should be easy enough to find via a Google Search.

I only recall them having seen a cover or two of The Heap.

The blog Prof kindly refers to looks to be this one

While I don't recall Skywald's Scream magazine, IPC in the UK had a Scream weekly comic that is fondly remembered from the 1980s.

THAT'S THE ONE!!!!!

SunBoy

Weird but true... I was a bit worried about the fact that the guy running that blog had stated his intentions of assembling and publishing a collection of all of Skywald's POE stories, at the exact time I was finding and setting them up at my blog.

But then he offered to HELP, and sent me 2 stories I didn't have. Cool.

...but then a few months later, all of a sudden, he pulled a "180". He DEMANDED that I remove "his" cover scans from my blog, and DELETE them off my hard drive. WTF????? Instead, I blocked him on Facebook, and haven't heard from him again.

Another fan, Patrick Ford, told me he believed the guy's sudden about-face was because he'd seen my name in the long, long "comments" section of an article at THE COMICS JOURNAL website, involving Marvel Comics, and he'd suddenly discovered I was a Jack Kirby fan... because I'd made some comments about Marvel's former editor that he didn't like.

REALLY.

The insane thing (apart from the obvious), was, I'd commented on my blog that Marvel's former editor (and later publisher) had DELIBERATELY caused Skywald to GO OUT OF BUSINESS-- by SABOTAGING their distribution. He did this by flooding the market with a pile of B&W horror magazines. Apparently, he was trying to drive Warren out of business... but missed, and took out Skywald instead.

And here's the thing. I got this story-- FROM THE SKYWALD BLOG the guy had written himself! He was pissed off because I was passing on stuff HE said.

Some people just aren't worth dealing with.

By the way, I recently saw a collection of Skywald POE stories listed for sale online. I suppose it might be his. I don't have any use for it. Oh well!
