Hey, all. I don't know how many people remain from the time when the City of Heroes MMO was an active thing (longtimers remember just how fond of it Vee was) but it was recently discovered that a private server has existed for the last six years. As a result of all the fallout, a server was made to everyone. Preface: technically this is not a LEGAL server as it does not have the official approval of NcSoft, the owners of the COH License, but they are in talks with someone about permitting a community run server so there's hope that an official server may yet live again. It is possible to get on the Test Server if people like. I'm not sure it'd be allowed to post the link here, but I can PM it or post it if given the official okay. Just posting in case of possible interest and because I think Vee would have wanted it that way.

I also loved that game! Controllers and Defenders were my thing in CoH, but when City of Villains came out, I was hooked by the Mastermind. Oh, so much fun to have my robot minions (or zombie minions, or ninja minions, or thug minions, I had a lot of Masterminds...). I tried and tried to make so many Scrappers and the occasional Blaster or Tanker (I had tons of ideas for them!) but I just couldn't get into their playstyles, so my characters always ended up being more Controllers and Defenders. Super-hero comics are sorely lacking in those sorts of archetypal roles (although the Legion, natch, has a few, with Projectra (Illusion) and Imra (Mind), and Brainy kinda/sorta being a (Force Field) Defender, and perhaps a few others, like maybe Shady). I've heard about the secret server out there, but not really looked into it. I'm kind of afraid to get back on that horse, because it might utterly consume my life, and even worse, get yanked away unceremoniously because of it's sketchy nature, after I get hooked on it and abandon whatever MMO I'm currently playing. There's always a part of me that wants to 'go back' (to Star Trek Online, to Star Wars The Old Republic, to Everquest 2, to Dark Ages of Camelot, to Age of Conan, to City of Heroes / City of Villains) and I have to keep that nostalgic part of me locked away, because there are only so many hours in the day, and I have to remind myself what the daystar looks like from time to time. At least weekly...

I never played this MMO, but I loved Marvel Heroes so I can relate to the desire to go back to an old game.
Is this open to new registration or only for old account holders?

I remember it looking very cool but that I wasn't going to pay a suscription for a game. I'd always bought games that didn't have that. I was probably playing on battlenet for Diablo at the time. I did get at least an issue of the comic though. And the game did look tempting.

It's a test server and laggy as heck right now.
Easiest way to get information on accessig it is to go to the COH Survivors group on Facebook. Also if any PMs me I can probably send the link that way.

Last year I was reading about a Kickstarter that was hoping to be the "spiritual successor" to CoH. It was called, or became, City of Titans. I wonder what the impact of all this will be on their development.

There are currently THREE successors said to be in the running:
1. City of Titans. Oldest of the successor projects and the only one with a sucessful kickstarter. They wound up with more than half a million dollars, I believe. The game development has been slow, however, with a stand alone character creator supposedly around the corner.
2. Valiance Online. Second oldest. They were going great guns for a while, and then slowed down a lot. They are still working on the game.
3. Ship of Heroes. The youngest of the three. The devs claim they will have a Beta by the end of this year.
There's a FOURTH purported sucessor that spun out of City of Titans under the player who went by the name Golden Girl. She claims to still be working on a game, but hasn't revealed anything beyond concept art at this point.
The current community effort just now put up TWO more servers. That brings them up to a grand total of four.
It's been a crazy couple of weeks.

I did spot a four year old reddit post saying that SCORE had vanished after a month or so after working on something. I wonder if it was this, and they just went under the radar with it.

So is the original company defunct and it's Abandonware? Is that why this stuff is so far uncontested? The Internet says Paragon Studios was shut down.

Paragon Studios was shut down. NcSoft is the legal owner of the studio.
Right now there are talks going on to get permission to run an authorized community server.
So far, NcSoft has not taken any action against the rogue servers.

Hello! So, yeah, I haven't been on here in forever, but the "return" of "City of Heroes" made me come back to see if anyone else was playing again. I've been on for a couple weeks, and it's been pretty stable for a rogue server. And it's been so much fun running around again, this time trying new power sets and combos that weren't available when I last stopped playing. If anyone is interested, this is a good video to get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrs_B6WRRJM&feature=shareYou can find me on Excelsior under the global chat handle @LinusVP (brought him back first). I'd love to fight crime with some of the old gang while we still can!

Is it possible to create new accounts or did you have to play this game when it was originally around? I would like to try it, but only if it is possible.

Since these aren't officially sanctioned, there are no ties to original accounts. Anyone can come join the fun.
