Last week, I did jury duty for the first time in my life!

It threw off my usual routine, and I'm still catching up on stuff that got delayed, but otherwise I loved it!

Glad you enjoyed it. Awesome privilege to be part of a system that relies on the ordinary person.

So five years ago, I had a brain tumor that left me paralyzed down one side, and I just got back from my annual post-op (to remove as much as they could) MRI and the doctor said that the only way he could tell my MRIs for the last few years apart is that they'd printed the date on each one, so, five years, no growth, the good news to crow about is that I do not have to go in for annual MRIs and, in his words, "Call me if any new symptoms appear, but I hope I never have to see you again!" So, yay!

A literal load off my mind.

Now I want to do jury duty. I've never gotten picked! (Closest was when a relative got picked for jury duty for a crime that happened in my apartment building...)

Was it an interesting case? I've heard (from friends who've been picked multiple times), there's usually some bossy person on the jury that wants to talk over everyone and thinks they are the smartest, and that person needs to be stabbed on the first day so that everyone else can have an opinion.

It was a very interesting case, and thankfully it was civil rather than criminal.

The plaintiff and his lawyers gave us a cunningly elaborate sob story, which soft-hearted, soft-headed me fell for. On the other hand, the defendant was clearly an irresponsible brat of a kid, and his lawyer was a smarmy, throw-everything-at-wall type.

There was no one in the jury like Set described. The closest one to that was a registered nurse who was adamant that the defendant should not get off scot-free, and I agreed with her.

In the end, the defendant and his family's business had to pay up, even though it was a fraction of what the plaintiff was asking for.

I can finally announce From Beyond Press accepted my gross tribute to 90s superheroes and YA horror into their shopping mall horror anthology, Escalators To Hell.
