You know thinking of Dr. Mayalave...genetic engineering and all.

I started thinking Island of Dr. Moreau and other HG Wells noves. The Time Machine, Invisible Man, etc.

I wonder how much the Silve Age Legion has that old school sci-fi HG Wells stuff in it. Wells' material was big at that time in the minds of people as the predominant sci-fi stuff.

If Waid is going to be doing Anachronisms...it would be cool to see some of these old sci-fi concepts used today. Maybe RJ is HG? wink

Oh man, I love Metropolis it's my all time favorite silent movie.

You have a good point, Jorge. Superman was almost a straight rip off of Phillip Wylie's Gladiator. Wonder Woman is pulled from Greek Mythology and Batman was inspired by The Shadow.
I hadn't thought of visiting the roots of sci-fi that way but it's a worthy idea.

Yellowstar I just got Metropolis on DVD (as well as thx1138!)

Speaking of Phillip Wylie's Gladiator. The little I know of the character reminds me of MON-EL more than Superman! "Moody"

I found this old bookmark explaining who Gladiator was...and damn it reminds me of Mon-El.

http://www.novanotes.com/specul/aug282000.htm

Also to add to the Huxley Brave New World and his last book Island...

"over-population, coercive politics, militarism, mechanization, the destruction of the environment and the worship of science will find their opposites in the gentle and doomed Utopia of Pala. (Woodcock,18) Aldous Huxley used his books to explore his struggles against personal tragedy and to search for the meaning of human existence."

I wouldn't mind some of that in Legion. wink

Which seems to bring us back full circle to the "Brin as an android" discussion in another thread. I like the self-discovery stories. I think I remember times when Brin actually doubted his humanity and that made him interesting to read. Jeckie's struggle to be a Queen and a Legionnaire was a good story as well, Brainiac finally admitting his love for Laurel/Supergirl, the tragic romance of Dawnstar and Wildfire. All wonderful searches for meaning and truth.
That's the kind of Legion I'll always want (well, supervillian battles too) and it doesn't matter which boot it's in.

Invisible Kid is kind of obvious as a connection to classic sci-fi. I guess that Saturn Girl and Projectra would be updated versions on Dr. Mesmer. Alien shapechangers like Reep is an old idea probably with roots as far back as the superstitions of the middle ages.
The more time you spend thinking about it the more things you can find to connect Legionnaires to classic myths. Pretty cool.

It's not as old an idea as turn of the century sci-fi but Cockrum's obviously Star Trek influenced Legion designs were delightful. It was exactly the look needed for the LSH at the time.

Have any of you read Roy Thomas' runs in All-Star Squadron and Young All-Stars? The villainess Meqanique (sp?) is based on the robotic Maria from Metropolis and the character "Iron" Munro is the son of the character from Gladiator, who himself shows up in the comic.

New Elseworlds I now want to see: The Legion of Extraordinary Gentlemen

I've read the book, and I guess he is moody, but it depends on the time period in his period. The thing is because he's different he's always alone, and even when he tries to fit in bad things happen to him and those around him. He's probably at his brightest during college until tragedy brings him down; after that its a spiral of trying to find a place to fit in and failing.

That said, Hugo Danner never really struck me as the type of guy who was presented in Roy Thomas' "Sons of Dawn" Young All-Stars storyline either (Danner was the father of GA Superman-like YAS character Arn "Iron" Munroe)

I kinda thought that the 'Society for Creative Anachronism' line referred to the very fact that Legion dresses up like superheroes. My call is that no one, and I mean no one, is going to have run around in a costume fighting crime for centuries before the Legion. So along come these bored kids taking on snarky names like 'Lighting Lad' and raising hell like in the good old days of the 20th and 21st centuries...

That said, I'll be very happy if the new book has some 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' moments.

Iron Munroe the GA Superman replacement being the son of the Gladiator is super cool.

Regarding Mon-El? I like the brooding moody Mon-El with depth. Almost like a samauraii. smile

Only on weekends, and then not very hard.

I just see the whole 'boy, lad, lass,' thing as possibly being done with a bit of a sneer if this is really going to be an indie rock legion with a very thuggish Ultra Boy.
