On Wednesday, my dad had pulled out old Doctor Who Weeklies for my brother to look at. Very early on, there's Steve's distinctive style. He was excellent even then. I was telling them what he went on to do in glowing terms. Rogue Trooper, Laser Eraser, some Dredd, Tyranny Rex and the Harlem Heroes. His art was always such a plus to those strips. Not to mention Deadline with the late, and also missed, Brett Ewins. He was a really nice bloke to meet too. My thoughts are with his family and friends. His and Garth Ennis' Preacher is one of my all-time favorites. I also loved their work together on Hellblazer prior to Preacher--the main reason I tried preacher in the first place. He also had a fine Animal Man run with Tom Veitch and some great Punisher runs with both Ennis and Jason Aaron. He had a very clean but detailed style, and I think he had a special gift for subtle facial expressions that made his characters instantly relatable. I was still hoping that he and Garth would reunite and create something really kick-ass again that would be wholly creator-owned. This is a huge loss. You'll be missed, Steve.
