Looks like DC announced a new logo today.

What do you think? Looks old school to me, in a way. Not sure this reboot necessitates another logo change though.

I don't like it. The current logo is new and allows individual titles to have their own flare. This feels like a step backwards.

Meh. I prefer the original bullet or even the swooshy one of the 2000s. It's better than the "peel away" one, though.

Pretty much this.

It's sort of like the one from the early '70s and is about the worst since then too. Yuck.

A history of the logo:

[Linked Image]

In order:
1940
1941/1942
1949
1970
1971 ?
1972
1974
1976
2005
2012
2016

29 years my favorite logo lasted. Let's see this version try to last a tenth of that time.

It definitely hearkens back to the early 70s logos, but I don't like it anywhere near as much as them!

It's sufficiently similar to that red/white one (second row, right) that they've obviously taken that as a basis. I really wonder if they would have applied the same sort of principle to the "bullet" if they could.

[Owing to the sort of cockup you wouldn't think a major corporate entity would be able to make in this era of corportate-friendly judges, they can't have a logo with stars in it any more.]

Don't care for nor see a point in the font. Hidden imaging? None that I see.

I see quite a lot of points. In fact, the oddity is the lower inner curves on the D & C smile

Most likely explanation is there is no hidden meaning except that the 'old school stencil font' used in the old 60s-70s logo is so generic that it would be difficult to protect in Court. They fix that by using a new 'pointy stencil font'. Knowing these branding consultant types they paid for a new modified font that is proprietary and registered for use only in their client's corporate identity.

You wouldn't want some guy named Dan with a fried chicken stand to sue you claiming he's used a stenciled DC inside a circle as his logo for Dan's Chicken for the last 20 years.

THe previous logo didn't last long because it hasn't aged well. It has a shading which makes it look 3D. Not long after they chose it the whole world swiched to 'flat monochromatic' logos. Just look at the app icons on your smartphones.

Nothing beats the classic bullet of course (still the best!) but I actually didn't mind the previous 'peel-away' logo. It was definitely the most futuristic and stylized of the bunch and I seem to remember it having some interesting animations and effects on digital screens.

I absolutely hated the 'swoosh' logo! It looks like it belongs on a brand of washing powder or something.

And this new logo is almost as bad! UG-LY font, too much white-space, an annoying discrepancy between the thick line of the letters and the thin line of the circle, and there's something sort of lop-sided looking about it. I can't even imagine how ugly it's going to look on the comics.

Yet another fail from the current DC brain-trust.

When I see that logo (which is rarely) I do think of DC Comics

Hence why DC Comics sued them.

Boy did THAT backfire!

That was the thing - they had obviously given next-to-no-thought to how it would work in a static context. Like, oh, say, on the COVER OF A COMIC!

I think it was the other way around. From what I heard, DC's copyright lawyers screwed up their claim on the logo and the DC shoe company snatched it up and sued them for having a logo that used stars on it.

Something else else to actually (and, no, I'm not being sarcastic) thank Microsoft for.

Funny point, however. Look at the DC Entertainment site: http://www.dcentertainment.com/ Where they've gone for a full skeuomorphic metallic treatment for it...

I believe that DC Comics sued DC Shoes, DC Shoes found out that DC Comics had screwed up, got it dismissed and then counter-sued. And won. (I still don't get that. You don't actually need to register a trademark, just demonstrate prior use. How the hell DC Comics managed to lose that one...?!)

PS: DC Comics 2020 logo preview wink

Sure MS started it in Windows, but I can't believe the trend would have taken off if Steve Jobs hadn't died. He was the king of skeuomorphism.

The easy explanation for that is to blame Jim Lee for having a design sense stuck in the 1990s.

Quite possibly. The result is much the same though.

Oh, the DC Comics site has the flat version. It's the parent company that has the metallic treatment for it.

So, apparently it's somehow supposed to evoke the symbols of the "Big Three". I'm not really seeing it.
