CNN is reporting a death at pop star Prince's mansion/recording studio in Minnesota and TMZ (of course) is reporting that the death is the paisley artist himself. Earlier this week he forced a plane to make an emergency landing because he was "sick" with the flu.
I haven't listened to anything of his in decades but he was a mainstay in my teens in the early 80's. Another icon of my childhood gone. Guess turning 50 myself soon means a lot more of this happening.
The BBC just confirmed it and they are about the only news source I trust anymore so...RIP Prince Rogers Nelson.

I can't say I was ever a huge Prince fan, but for someone my age, it's pretty hard to deny that he was a major part of the zeitgeist.
RIP.

Prince had his first hit, "I Want to Be Your Lover" in late 1979, just a few months after I started keeping track of the Top 40. He was a major presence on the charts and in the pop mainstream throughout the '80s.
Though I can't say I was a fan, I appreciated the inventiveness, energy, and freshness he brought to music. My favorite song of his is still "1999," with its catchy hook and clever lyrics.

I'm not ashamed to say I own "Purple Rain" on vinyl... What??? It was back when you could order so many albums for a penny and sign up for the Columbia House record club... RIP, Purple One.

After TMZ got the death of Michael Jackson first, I trust them when it comes to this stuff. They always have a way of getting their reporters on the scene first when it comes to celebrities.
Even though I am not of the generation, I have come to know the '80s well thanks to the Internet (which Gen X mostly built). I like "Sheila" and "Raspberry Beret".

Ahhh Prince took masculinity and shoved it sideways. He also made sex a public good thing. And these were important for me.

I have to think that just about everyone who is my age owned a copy of Purple Rain in the '80s. He was a true original, and I've found myself singing several of his songs over the past day. I think I'll always have a soft spot for "Kiss".
Rest in peace, Paisley One.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!
