Admiral Darios (?) was so balls out awesome in the 5YG. In fact, I think a hard ass made a nice contrast to his Hyrakkian form.

Tellus as the fish out of water wasn't much of a contrast or complex .. (I found Quislet as a foreigner in a new dimension more interesting) and Invisible Kid 2, Polar Boy, Magnetic Kid ... etc all had the newbie storyline going on too!

besides Tellus seemed like a wimp. and it was nice to see a new fully adult character in Admiral Darios.

Also, I really liked that random Science Police officer in the 5YG who was half Daxxamite. Still very impressive but interesting. The one that opens the canister with Starfinger's ring in it. (?)

Well? Any more ?

As a side note ... Justice League Earth Man Spider Woman is totally a different person in my mind.

I agree, Tellus' fish out of water thing felt redundant with Blok also around.

I always liked Tellus more than Blok, mainly because Tellus was way more visually interesting while Blok was just kind of dull.

Doc Chasseer. She had two appearances, then... bupkus.

B5 was always more interesting when he had actual colleagues and friends outside the Legion proper. Which is true of most team members, actually. All team and no friends/family makes a dull Legionnaire.

Doc C was a great character!

Not a supporting character, more of a one-shot but Devil Fish came to my mind.

I don't know Darios, but did like Tellus.

He did repeat some of the Blok character arc, but I don't blame that on Tellus, so much as on Blok being so deadly dull. Almost *any* of the League of Super-Assassins, IMO, would have been better choices, particularly Lazon, Neutrax or Titania (all of whom would have, IMO, added something new and exciting, via power, in the case of Lazon or Neutrax, or personality, in the case of Titania).

I do have to agree with Nosty and Set. If given a choice. I would pick Tell us over Blok any day. Tellus had more interesting visuals and powers. And his personality/arc as the curious alien would not have seemed so bad if he had been the only one.

Tellus and Blok were definitely pretty much the same mold of character, not only in the curious alien outsider idea but also the gentle giant alien capable of great damage when enraged kind of idea. Thinking about it, Tellus's 5YL story would actually have made a lot of sense with Blok substituted for him.

I definitely like the visual of Tellus, at least as drawn by Steve Lightle, and he would have been even more interesting if they'd kept the original color-changing idea.

I do wonder how many fans Blok had by the time of his death during the 5YL era. Were fans outraged that he was killed off?

As I recall, he was pretty near the bottom in leadership elections, which may or may not be interpreted as popularity polls.

You mean Spider-Girl, Peebz? The villainous Retroboot Sussa was certainly a far cry from the sneaky thief with a heart of gold that I came to love 5YL.

Have to agree fully with you Set, and the idea of having a really powerful woman like Titania would have been fairly ground-breaking at that time. also I like her bracelets.

Yeah,

I'm thinking of that last visual if Tellus and Blok HAD been switched! Good thing Geoff Johns wasn't around yet or we'd probably have gotten that scene.

YES. They were totally different people. They even had different hair.

I can see goofy Sussa who was rejected and fell in with the wrong crowd, in over her head with the LSV ... and then became a thief and member of the Legion on the run but ...

Nympho serial killer ... methinks no. plus that snarl on her face?!?

And my Sussa would never condone wanton killing or widespread oppression!

That sleeping with Earth-Man bit is the most offensive development, really.

It is so wacky it seems like an Adventure Era plot ...

"Oh that time Sussa accidentally walked into the path of the Genocidal Sex Fiend Ray and you knew by her white hair and snarl on her face."

As for bit characters that struck a chord for me, my fondness for Pheebs (of whom I could find no scans online!) is well-known.

Also Gigi Cusimano, who I use in my various Legion Tryouts fics.

I remember reading Crisis and seeing Blok in that classic Lightle costume with the shoulder pads. My little heart swelled with pride at the Legion being so clearly different, and slicker, than practically anything else at the time.

There was a time when the Legionnaire argued over admitting new members. They felt they needed new blood, but also felt that none of their students were ready for the step up.

For me Tellus falls into the category of not being ready. He was essentially selected as a replacement for the loss of Saturn Girl's powers. He was unsteady with a flight ring, unsure of the effect of his powers (mind scan on Dev-Em) and a little culturally naïve.

However, Tellus also brought some much needed variation to the team and there's a fair bit of story potential in a team member who's not quite there yet. Chemical Kid would be a later variation of that.

I liked the idea of a race happy enough in their mother ocean. Only the harsh arrival of the Poopy Globes brings them out of their world. I thought Darios was a bit of an odd character shoved in from someone with a love of admiral Ackbar from star wars.

I could see a race that wasn't too concerned with the outside UP, falling foul of the Dark Circle. The Circle wouldn't have to promise too much to get them onside, capitalising on that lack of contact with other races.

Tellus' fresh look at the UP was a bit different from Blok's searching for identity. Having lost a world, his "friends" and been a pawn of the Dark Man, Blok was a bit of a darker character for me.

I was going to say that the cold way that Spider Girl moved from one relationship to another, was particularly icky. But, perhaps that's what she always does. Glommed onto the Legion, then the LSV, groups of thieves, then the 5YG Legion particularly Jo and finally the JLE.

Sussa always seemed like a bit of an opportunist. She was hardly evil, but after the Legion didn't want her she went to the LSV. It is a trait I am highlighting in my own writing; she joined my replacement Legion because it was the most practical choice at the time, and moonlights as a security consultant. But she won't stoop to mass murder or things like that.

Tellus, definitely not ready. Chosen more for the usefulness of his powers, something Lamprey or Crystal Kid did not have. Thoth highlights a good difference though - Blok had a more confident air though still curious. Tellus was just a little bit lost, though had plenty of strength of character too. He had the makings of a fine Legionnaire, he just was not quite there yet.

Alas poor Pheebs! We hardly knew ye.

I think Gigi and Shvaughn are quite underused.
