i remember the infamous issue where Dream Girl came back as Anna Nicole Smith, but were there others that let themselves go, as mere mortals often do?

Y'know, I wonder if Nura's weightgain had anything to do with dating Thom for all those years...

Nura's weight gain back then was ..... well, a little strange. I was never sure what to make of that - she had always been the beautiful one and I figured it was TMK's dig at our society's preoccupation with the idea that fat is unacceptable.
She was still incredibly sexy, that was made obvious in the stories. She seemed to be a take-off on Mae West - ample, funny, outrageous and lovely. I don't think she had all those admirers just because she was High Seer; although there was a hint (IMO) of sexual harassement with her scantily-clad advisors. Were they required to dress like that, to be young and handsome and male?
Chuck Taine was also overweight, although much less than he had been in the pre-TMK stories. Heavy, not obese. I thought he looked good - he was training soldiers, so he must have been in fairly good shape - even 20th century research has shown that one can be overweight and physically fit (aerobically and strength-wise).
But they were the only overweight ones that I recall. Even Imra and Lydda snapped right back to their slim selves after giving birth.

Didn't Tenzil experience weight-gain at one point?

Nura was always voluptuous. If you look at her intro issue, you'll see that she had quite the hourglass figure. I'm sure that big red belt helped keep her waist small. Also, if you really look at the way she was depicted throughout the series, her weight seemed to go up and down. Cockrum, Grell and Sherman definitely drew her slimmer, but other artists drew the curves. Giffen definitely made her curvy. So did Lightle. Greg LaRocque drew her at her most muscular. I always figured it was her Legion training, along with her specialized combat training with Val that kept her from getting large. Therefore, when she left the Legion and settled into a comfy life as High Seer of Naltor, she let it go a litttle bit. I figure she was presented with delicacies from across the galaxy. She was probably also encourgaged to rest and relax more so her visions could come more readily. Despite her size, she still wanted to look fabulous. I'm sure designers from all over sent her clothes to wear. They'd be the buzz of the media the next day. "Who's Nura Wearing?" My only complaint about Nura's depicition was that she wore her same Dream Girl costume during End of an Era and Zero Hour. I think she should have been in something more appropriate for the High Seer, a more mature woman and a larger sized one. She looked like the before picture in a Jenny Jones make-over.

Actually, I just took a quick look at some Lightle issues. He drew Nura fairly slim.

Actually, some of us might prefer a more meaty Dream Girl...
I thought some of the TMK characters were a little beefier than they were Adventure era. Whether or not that was due to the differences in Giffen's art or if it was an honest effort to make those guys and gals a little more middle age, I don't know.
The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.
Don't judge me!

I did a lot of sketches of big Nura at my late, lamented dreamgirlnura yahoogroup. It was a lot of fun, actually, because it was more about being creative than the regular supersexyskimpy outfits that'd go on a typical pinup babe.

Nardo tried to kill him but the gun's "rays" deflected off Superboy and somehow changed Tenzil's molecular structure (hey, it was the 60s), making him fat. Hence, Nardo's power of "fat-assing". I don't know in which story or by what means he became thin again.

I made the Mae West comparison to Tom Bierbaum at a con back when he was still working on LSH, and he said that was exactly what Giffen was aiming for.

I completely took it as... Nura's appeal -her sexiness- was more an aspect of her personality and confidence more than it was of her appearance. It never occurred to me that she was even remotely less confident with a little more weight on her frame than she was when she was slender. That made me like her even more than I had previously -which was a lot.
Of course this was ruined by the End of an Era -when Nura tells her younger counterpart about regretting not avoiding carbohydrates or something. I choose to ignore that statement.

Caleb - yeah I remember that statement made by Nura as well as it made me think "what? Was that she reallly really DEPRESSED when she was the high seer, eating those junks?" that's the one threw me off while I was reading the End of the Era. But...I was so glad that Thom Kallor gets to be the FINAL person to kiss her! Yummy, Thom!!! I wish I can be the one he gets to kiss!

I remember being kinda annoyed by Nura's weight gain back then...
But that has changed over time, and I now agree with Dean's statements above.
If they ever did a TMK-era live-action movie, Anna-Nicole could definitely play Nura if she'd ditch that irritating "little-girl" jabber she uses all-too frequently...

Yeah, Anna Nicole fits Nura visually, but she'd really have to rehearse her lines long and hard in order to come across even half as smart as Nura.

The Adult Legion story from Adenture comics comes to mind when I think beyond Nura for this topic. I recall many of the Legionnaires looking pretty beefy. I'll have to look it up and get specifics.

One that gets me is R.J. Brande - he must be a real yo-yo dieter. Sometimes he's drawn really fat, sometimes thin, sometimes in between. I wonder to what extent it has mirrored peoples' ideas of what real CEOs look like. I'm surprised we haven't seen him as a 30-year old dot-com president.
