I don't have an accounting or anything to go on. I've just noticed that some of the other groups have a lot of other people that are saying that Brin is a favorite. When I was coming along, he never seemed to be a favorite. Most folk seemed to dislike him, until he was turned into a tragic figure and then turned into furball.
have others noticed this? Just wondering.

When they turned him into Wolverine, maybe? Actually, I don't have the numbers before me right now but I believe he was pretty popular during the Baxter Era, as he typically did pretty well in leadership elections, culminating in his winning the Deputy spot at the end of the series. I take it that the basic appeal is the idea of the "lone wolf" on the gigantic super-team.

He's been fairly popular according to the Grant Totals ,but Wolverine was the first thing that crossed my mind. Second was a huge trade in Furball plush toys, before I realised there weren't any.

I've always liked Brin ever since I first read of him in the Baxter series, though since I wasn't alive during the 80's, my perception of him may be the exception rather than the norm.

After Karate Kid he's been my second favorite for years. I love the Smallvile version of him.

I always assumed he was one of the more popular ones, alongside the likes of Wildfire, Dawnstar and Ultra Boy. Maybe it was because of his "hands-on" powers. And he always seemed to be one of those Legionnaires who would show up in group fight scenes a lot.

But when I was reading, he was always written as kind of a ...offshoot, if that makes sense. Part of the team, but filler for most of the writers. Biggest thing that seemed to happen to him was being on the asteroid with Imra, and then things went to hell.
He was always my favorite, but even in the book he got put down by other characters like PG and Shady. Just wondering when the seismic shift seemed to happen.

The bromance with Blok was what made me come around to liking Brin.

Ah, I kind of get what you mean now. I always felt he was popular among the readers, I always chalked up his "offshoot" status to him being a "Lone Wolf" type of guy.
The cattiness of some other Legionnaires always annoyed me. And I got reallt pissed at the drama surrounding the asteroid incident. All Brin and Imra were guilty of were comforting each other. Then you have people like Element Lad assuming they were cheating and making snide remarks. I really wanted to smack Jan then. What a friend!

I was pissed with the comments from PG and Shaddy sometimes. They were such snobs!
I liked how he was one of the few fist to face characters. He could really brawl!
There was the issue with him going to Lilith to plant a flower for Karate Kids last wish that sealed it for me.

The first memory I have of a writer giving him a starring role (besides his introduction in Adventure) was in the Bates/Cockrum era. That was also the beginning of the feral-looking Timber Wolf. Before that he was just another in the mass of Legionnaires with brown hair parted on the side. Maybe it was this effort to make him visually distinctive that started his rise in popularity.

I actually preferred hair parted Brin to Wolverine hair Brin.

Ha he had Wolverine hair before Wolverine! He stole it from Brin! A little known fact among most comic fans.

Timber Wolf was always my favorite Legionnaire side by side with Ultra Boy and Lightning Lad.
Perhaps the fact that Brin got dumped on made him more popular to the readers. I too liked his friendship with Blok. They were two fish out of water types and it was nice to see the bond. Brin developed the same bond with Gates in the recent Legion Lost series which was nice to see.
His venture to plant that seedling for Karate Kid's will was a very memorable adventure. That storyline also produced the introduction of his best uniform as well.

His 80's Baxter uniform vol. 3 no. 13 and current Legion Lost threads are my favorites overall.

The Brin/Gates friendship is one I will miss. Like the Brin/Blok one, it felt organic.
Brin/Val friendship wasn't shown much in the comics, if I recall.

I can understand KK and TWolf being at least very good comrades in arms because they were both fist-to-face guys but were lower on the super strength. TW had it but not Mon-El, UBoy, or Blok levels. So they both had a lot in common. I can see TWolf as being a student to KK, learning how to apply his abilities to the max with the martial arts taught to him by KK.

Gotta say the two 70's uniforms are the best look for him to me. Very Legionesk, fit the character, and were visually cooler than any other legionaire. Well, except for Tinya's 70's look.

I agree, and I'm sure Val would have enjoyed picking up some ideas from T-Wolf's more "intuitive" and free-flowing fighting style.

Both Wolverine and Timber wolf's looks (hair) were done by Dave Cockrum who is one of the great legion/x-men artists. He's often over looked, but he did some amazing fundamental work on both series that set them up for others to take what were obscure series very main stream.

Adding Timber Wolf to the core team of the Legion animated cartoon a few years back was brilliant. It was a great way to showcase the character and let viewers know that Marvel's Wolverine isn't the only hero based on this archetype. I think the popularity of Brin in the animated series really helped pave the way for his starring role in Legion Lost.

Unfortunately, Lost wasn't that good, and the current thing in Untied isn't that great either, yet. It's got the "feel" of the old teamups, but just barely.
And there isn't enough of him so far to make it so.

I think Brin benefited a lot from the toon though, at least.
