a new game!

each poster will choose one movie from the five the prior poster has listed, and re-conceptualize it as a Legion-related story in some form (you have a lot of creative range on this). If there are more than one movie by the same name and the list does not specify which, it is the choice of the person who choses that one.

Example:
(prior list)

Rent
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Life of Brian
Transformers
Halloween

my Legionization:

Breakfast at Spiffany's

Young socialite Holly Golightlass makes her way in 2961 Metropolis, naively running errands for jailed crime boss Sally Starfinger, worrying about her brother Garth in the army, tending to her unnamed pet protean, evading her estranged husband Doc Mayavale from the backwater Winath (both of which she pretends no connection with), and involuntarily falling in love with the young writer Pol 'Fred' Krinn.

You will then leave five movies for the next person. They can include unused films from prior posters' lists. Your list should cover a range of genres and eras, to give the next poster as many choices as possible, as not everyone has seen nor appreciates all movies. The last thing we want is for the thread to die because Obscure Movie Fan Lad/Lass has listed five films no one else has even heard of. So try to keep obscure favorites to only one out of five.

The initial list:

The Breakfast Club
Weekend at Bernie's
Casablanca
Enemy Mine
Moulin Rouge

have at it!

The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

Garth Ranzz & Val Armorr as members of Work Force were employees of Leland McCauley. When they went to him with evidence of wrongdoing within Work Force, McCauley seems pleased and invites the two out to his beach house/resort for the weekend. McCauley plans to have them killed, but before they arrive a Khundian assassin kills McCauley. Hilarity ensues as the boys must make it seem like McCauley is still alive. Between dodging the Khundian and not being blamed for the death themselves, Garth still finds time to romance the lovely Imra Ardeen.

Marla Latham is sick of mentoring kids. He had better things planned for his life than being a nurse maid for a bunch of ungrateful brats. Thanks to their run ins with the science police, he's now having to do extra duty on a Saturday morning to teach them some discipline. He sees everything he dislikes about society in the way these kids were brought up, and isn't shy about letting them know. Who do they think they are anyway?

The Criminal - Jo Bender comes from an abusive home with frequent fights with his drunken father. Jo's hitting out against everything. With Ultra Strength, that's only getting him further and further into trouble.

The Brain - Querl Johnson feels the pressure to succeed all around him. His family and his teachers all say how smart he is. He can see them calculating their own comfort in the reflection of his scientific success. He can't afford to ever fail. But no one's particularly interested in what Querl's thinking. That might change if they saw the nano-Computo he has stashed in his school locker. It certainly would if they knew how Querl's first A- grade was affecting him.

The Princess - With rich, influential parents, Tinya Standish has a life of success mapped out in front of her. She lives in a world that might as well be a universe away from the others. The best of educations has made her, and all her class, able to excel in the world their riches shape. But as she looks at all her identi-kit friends; the sameness and ease of their luxury, Tinya wants something more. Something else else dangerous. It's in detention that she meets Jo.

The Athlete - Rokk Clark's father didn't make the grade as a top Magno-Ball player. But that's okay. He's getting to live out that life vicariously through his son. He didn't have the money to relocate from Braal, but Rokk will. Rokk must. His impoverished family are depending on it. Rokk must always do better, be faster, be sharper than any of the other players. Rokk can't remember a day that wasn't planned for him, He can barely remember a thought that was his own. He doesn't know what he wants and has no way of ever telling any of his family. Everything he does is his father's decision. Rokk's resentment means that confrontation is inevitable. All he needs is something to show him another life. To take him from the oppressive shadows of his own.

The Basket Case - Tasmia Reynolds is comforted by dark things. She uses it in the black of her make up, the bleakness of her words and the darkness of her thoughts. Her mind wanders, creating her own worlds in the shadows of everyone else's reality. She tells everyone she comes from a line of chosen warriors, but actually comes from a hill tribe. She pretends to be comfortable in the big cities and with new technology, but her home has nothing like anything she sees here. But Tasmia is getting found out, and her lies are getting out of control. She needs something to focus her life on. She meets Rokk and the attraction is...magnetic.

Marla Latham returns from another session of shooting the breeze with Chuck, the janitor. It's nearly the end of another in a long line of wasted days. But instead of seeing the students and their essays, he's left with an empty room and a note.

"Dear Mr.Latham,

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever we did wrong. But we think that you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us. For you the future is set. In the simplest terms, and the most convenient definitons. But what we found is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess and a criminal.

The future is ours, and we are Legion."

Venturablanca

It is twenty years after “Five Years Later”. Ord Quelu, formerly Duplicate Boy of the Heroes of Lallor, is now cynical, bitter and disillusioned in his middle-age. Still possessed of great powers, he refuses to use them, for any reason, even to his own advantage, because of some great tragedy in his past. Rather, he is now the owner and proprietor of an upscale casino and nightclub on Ventura, "Quelu’s Café". Throughout much of the rest of the United Planets, an interplanetary civil war rages on. Refugees and expatriates desperate to return to their homeworlds pass through Ventura, officially neutral, but effectively under the control of one of the more brutal factions of UPGov.

The local Venturan Science Police are under the command of the equally bitter and cynical Captain Jacques Foccart, an unabashedly corrupt official. On a particular night, he is accompanied to Quelu’s by a black ops representative of the EarthGov faction controlling, Major Kivun Roxxas. The two men warn Ord to be on the lookout for two particular fugitives, wanted for “questioning”. Although ominous in their warnings, Ord is distracted by a tune being played by the Café’s house theramin-player, Khefurb Che Bez.

Upon the departure of Captain Foccart and Major Roxxas, Ord storms over, furious that Khefurb has disobeyed his orders to never to perform the song: “As Spacetime Goes By”. Ord is stunned to see, standing by the theramin, his former lover, Salu “Vi” Digby of Imsk. She has accompanied by her spouse, Ayla Ranzz, a renowned fugitive Resistance leader. They implore Ord to use his abilities to transport them safely to the Lightning Ring Farms on Winath, a peaceful, truly neutral and unaligned world, and one of the last outposts of true civilization. They explain Ayla has information that may allow WinathGov to effectively broker a peace between hundreds of worlds, but that Major Roxxas and his faction will stop at nothing to see Ayla apprehended.

Ord refuses to assist them for any reason, and at any price, explaining that the last time he used his powers, it resulted in the deaths of the other Lalloran heroes.

After the women leave, Ord tells the theramin-player, “Play it again, Khefurb. Play ‘As Spacetime Goes By’”.

As Spacetime Goes By

I hope that you will grock a meteor’s just a rock
A falling star in the sky; the future and the past collide
As spacetime go by

And when two sentients meet / They murmur text and tweet
And wait for a reply: the future and the past collide
As spacetime go by

Old fashioned music from parallel astral planes
11th-dimensional strings Fold up into branes
Protean needs protean starships ply the space-lanes
As spacetime go by

I hope that you will grock a meteor’s just a rock
A falling star in the sky; the future and the past collide
As spacetime go by

Overcome with emotion, the Lalloran breaks down and weeps uncontrollably.

Later that night, Vi confronts Ord in the deserted café. When he refuses again to help her, she threatens him with a space-pistol, but changing tactics, confesses that she is still in love with him.

Ord's bitterness dissolves. He agrees to help, on the condition that Vi will stay with him, while he sends Ayla home to Ranzz. When Ayla unexpectedly shows up, having narrowly escaped a Science Police raid on a Resistance meeting, Ord sends Vi away to a hidden room. Ayla is aware that Vi was planning to come to Ord again to ask for help. But Ayla, aware that Roxxas has now targeted Vi as well, tries to persuade him that he can use his powers to send Vi to safety, even if it means leaving Ayla alone on Ventura, at the mercy of Roxxas. The Science Police, led by Foccart, burst in and arrest Ayla. They also want to search the cafe for Vi. Captain Foccart warns that Major Roxxas will arrive at any moment, and encourages Ord’s immediate cooperation.

Ord leads Captain Foccart, alone, to the room where Vi is hidden; he explains that the time has come for them to start standing up for what is right, reminding Captain Foccart of his time in the Legion, and telling him they need to again begin resisting the status quo. Replicating the powers of Triplicate Girl, Ord creates two additional copies of himself. Then, replicating Durlan powers, he shape-shifts one of the duplicates to resemble Vi, and the other to resemble Ayla.

Captain Foccart uses his power to render the Vi-doppelganger invisible, then leaves with the two doppelgangers in tow. In a short time, the real Vi enters the room, having been exchanged for her doppelganger by Captain Foccart.

Ord uses his abilities to create a brief, untraceable stargate to Winath, and tells the real Vi and Ayla to make their escape. Vi protests, saying that she had promised to stay with him. Ord insists that she must leave him, and he must give her up, saying they would both regret it if she stayed: "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of our lives." She cryptically answers, “We’ll always have the Legion,” and departs with Ayla to Winath.

When Ord returns to the café proper, Major Roxxas is standing over the corpses of the duplicates, who have retained their false appearances. Satisfied that he has fulfilled his mission, Major Roxxas leaves the café, stating that he will be returning to Weber’s World.

“Your deception cannot last,” Captain Foccart counsels Ord, when they are alone together. “When it is eventually discovered that WinathGov has access to those files, Roxxas will know that the real Vi and Ayla have escaped, and will return to Ventura to question both of us.”

Ord states, “I’m just a casino operator. I know nothing about all these intrigues. But you, as Captain of the Science Police, will be required to take some action.”

Foccart answers, “I suppose… I will ask my men to round up the usual suspects.”

Ord replies, "Jacques, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Rokk Krinn's Horror Picture Show

That Grell-era bustier got him thrown out of the Legion for cross-dressing before it was in vogue, so the former Cosmic Boy moves into a secluded mansion with a bunch of weirdos where he works on perfecting his greatest creation: a magnetic Frankenstein's monster with which he intends to wreak havoc upon the world or unsuspecting tourists, whichever comes first. Meanwhile, he and his associates amuse themselves by dancing and singing to "Let's Do the Time Bubble Warp Again"!

Captain Krinn put down the remaining pages of the slim dossier and wiped the sweat from his forehead. The week on Rimbor had left him feeling soft and unsettled. Out here, beyond Bismoll, he wanted to be back in the bar where the SPs had found him. Back there in his misery, he longed only for the frontier and something to test himself against. Kent. He was going to kill Kent.

What had made his target, a man destined to be a military leader, turn his back on a glittering career? The pictures, lying at the bottom of the cabin with the dossier, showed a man that had barely aged over decades. No wonder he had retrained with soldiers half his age and still excelled. Krinn ran his fingers through his hair, feeling for the signs of recession he knew were there. Soft. Not like Kent.

It had been months since the rumours had begun drifting out from the Khundian buffer zone. Rumours of a small, well trained group with a capacity for great acts. At times gestures of hope, but increasingly they had become acts of brutality: Of terror. Who were these men? They followed their leader with an almost religious fervour. They had a devotion and unity that one man once inspired in the UP. Back then, everyone had willingly followed that man to the edge of oblivion. Racing into danger with smiles on their faces. Kent.

Perhaps it was the compromise? The endless treaties meaning little to any side as the atrocities continued. Perhaps it was the greed? The chief’s ship still bore the scars from the Sklarian raiders. A minor foe in a rapacious galaxy eager to take whatever it could, at any cost.

Krinn had seen UP smart-bombardments, where only the first missile was chipped for the press shots while the rest ploughed into civilians. He had seen the carnage of a badly armed Khund advance and the torture camps of the Dominion science-caste.

Krinn wondered why his target had waited so long? What rage and guilt must have been unleashed when there was no going back? He idly touched the green tinged metallic spheres attached to his uniform and stared out into the black.

The ship would soon pass through the sunless systems near Khundia. The heart of darkness. Beyond, greater horrors waited. Kent.

The Seven Substitutes

Mu Orionis Ba / Bb V, is a Terran colony, also known as Bauerchen. It is a small agricultural planet, far less productive than Winath, or even Mardru.

A band of Orion pirates use Bauerchen as their personal supplies depot, taking fully half the crop produced each year.

But last year was a bad crop year; the pirates left without taking anything, but warned that they would expect a double ‘payment’ this year, or Bauerchen would suffer the consequences.

But this year was a bad crop year, too. There is scarcely enough to sustain the colony through the coming year. It is suggested that the planet find champions to defend them against the coming Orion pirate invasion. But with the Legion of super-Heroes disbanded in August 3013, who can protect the people of Bauerchen?

The Legion of Substitute Heroes, that’s who.

Chlorophyll Kid, Fire Lad, Stone Boy, Color Kid (wearing one of those stylish Geordi LaForge visors),
Rainbow Girl, Porcupine Pete, and Antennae Boy are recruited to defend the farmers. In a rousing motivational speech, they point out that while their powers are not so great, they have always stood up for the right, and the farming community can do the same. Some of the Bauercheners reveal that they, too, have secret super-powers: one has telescopic vision, another can teleport vegetable matter, one old man can make rocks as soft a pillows. They are inducted as honorary Substitutes.

The Subs also reveal that they have access to some of the Legion armory: a dozen or so flight rings and flying belts, a couple of dozen reinforced trans-suits, a retro-fitted obsolete Legion cruiser, a Coluan force-shield generator, which lacks only a power source. Combining their resources, the Bauercheners and the Substitutes stand up to the Orion pirates, driving them away. Now that the pirates know the colonists will resist, it is too expensive to attack this world; they will seek other plunder elsewhere.

But it is a pyrrhic victory. There will be plenty of food until the next harvest, but many Bauercheners have lost their lives. The old man who could soften stones has died. Antennae Boy, Porcupine Pete, and Rainbow Girl fell in battle.

Fire Lad fatalistically observes: "The old man was right. Only the farmers won. We lost. We always lose."
