She is a great leader and very well-written in JLA: Year One. She's also said to be part of the inspiration for Silk Spectre. In turn, I think Silk Spectre helped writers embellish the connection between the Black Canaries (as mother and daughter) in the Post-Crisis era.

I love the idea that she's a total kickass fighter, and can hold her own, and then, when the threat ramps up, she can bust out a canary cry!
She's got a good super-power, and *she doesn't even need to use it* in a lot of fights. As with one of my favorite Legionnaires, Shadow Lass, that's just awesome.

A personal reflection:
When I started reading comics, Black Canary was the only female member of the JLA. This was at a time when Wonder Woman was off finding herself, and the JLA needed a female member (only one in those days!), so Dinah was imported from Earth Two. She was already dating Green Arrow when I started reading JLA, so that's how I came to know her at first.
Dinah stayed with the JLA even after Wonder Woman returned and after Hawkwoman and Zatanna joined, yet she was never as flashy as the other female members. She was always like the middle sister or the "other" aunt--a calm, stable presence who was always there but who never drew much attention to herself. (Well, there were those fishnet stockings . . .)
The first and only significant story I recall which spotlighted Black Canary was the one in which she was revealed to the daughter of the original Black Canary. This, of course, is comic book logic to the hilt and helped explain why she wasn't 20 years older, like the rest of her former JSA teammates. This story helped "redefine" and update Dinah, though it was only a superficial change--her basic character remained the same.
I have only scant memories of her during the late '80s Justice League relauch--though I liked her updated costume with the black headband.
I can't recall when she broke up with Green Arrow; that seemed to be a trend in the '80s and '90s: break up longstanding couples and let them "grow" on their own. I also can't recall how this worked out for Dinah, but if it did, I'm glad. It's a shame, though, that growing as a super-hero seems antithetical to being in a committed, loving relationship. One would hope that more heroes would be able to work things out.
I vaguely remember her role in JLA: Year One. It just seemed very odd to see a JLA origin with Black Canary in Wonder Woman's place. Dinah was once again reduced to being a stand-in for Diana. (Even their names are similar; I had to catch myself while typing this post and go back and correct Black Canary's name.) I think this role as Wonder Woman's stand-in is what has prevented me from seeing her as a unique hero in her own right--in spite of her unusual combination of powers and fighting skills. Black Canary always seemed to be defined in relationship to other characters (the JSA, Green Arrow, the JLA, and, of course Wonder Woman).
There's nothing wrong with that. Not every character can be a superstar.

I very much agree with this. She could stand up for herself, but was never too confrontational or aggressive. She could call out others when they were doing something stupid, but always got along well with everyone. She had everyone's respect without having to be feared.

Canary's League Ooh, that whole bottom row. Vixen, Roy, Reddy, Hawkwoman and Black Lightning! Them and Black Canary would be an interesting team. The best of the 'bombshell' covers, IMO,

I never liked Roy Harper, but I'd love to read more about the other four working together.

"Not every character can be ... " I love it, Peebz! I certainly didn't mean to piss Dinah off.

Birds of Prey, with Black Canary as the clear lead, is a series that should always be published by DC. How they can't get this right, since its such a vastly interesting heroine with an incredible team premise, is astounding.
Love all the images posted here. Her original costume is my favorite but I can't say I've ever hated a costume she wore.
I also love a Darwyn Cooke drawn Canary. Image if he could do a Silver Age JLA / JSA crossover? Man. With Dinah in a starring role?
