I loved the Solo series DC published a few years ago, and I'd love it if they revived it, even if only temporarily. For the unfamiliar, Solo was an anthology series that spotlighted stories by one artist in each ad-free, 48-page issue. The artists were encouraged to tell stories in any genre and could use any DC properties as they saw fit.

The twelve issues of the series featured Tim Sale, Richard Corben, Paul Pope, Howard Chaykin, Darwyn Cooke, Jordi Bernet, Mike Allred, Teddy Kristiansen, Scott Hampton, Damion Scott, Sergio Aragones, and Brendan McCarthy.

I started thinking the other day about who I'd like to see in a relaunched Solo series. To stay true to the eclectic spirit of the book, I didn't want to just pick my favorite artists (Jose Louis Garcia Lopez) or mainstream superstars (Jim Lee). I gave preference to writer/artists who weren't already heavily associated with DC; so, for instance, Bernie Wrightson, Fiona Staples, and George Perez were out. Also, before the book was cancelled, DC discussed potential future issues with Brian Bolland, John Cassaday, Dave Gibbons, Adam Hughes, Kevin Maguire, Tony Harris, J. G. Jones, Kevin Nowlan, Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson, Jill Thompson, Brian Stelfreeze, Bruce Timm, John Van Fleet, George Pratt and Matt Wagner. So, I decided to exclude them from my list.

Here's what I came up with, in no particular order.
Mike Mignola
Jim Steranko
Paul Chadwick
Phil Noto
Chris Ware
Linda Medley
Carla Speed McNeil
Terry Moore
Matt Kindt
David Mack
Emma Rios
Katie Cook

I'm curious to see who others might pick.

All the ones you've picked are excellent. I'd love a Phil Noto one for sure. I'd also add Javier Pulido, Marcos Martin and David Aja, all of whom are three artists I'm over the moon about.

I loved Solo when it was coming out. I remember at the Wizard World convention in 2006 I asked Dan Didio who else might be getting an issue. He looked at me like I had two heads. Obviously, he didn't know about the series or care about it. It was a clear indication back then that he was much more concerned about the load of shit DC had published from then to now, instead of the really creative and great things DC occassionally does like Solo.

Mark Chiarello was Solo's editor. He was also responsible for Wednesdays Comics, Batman: Black & White, and 5 of the Before Watchmen books. You'd think he'd get more work.

I was just thinking the other day that Marcos Martin would be good on a Legion book.
