I was looking for an existing "Need a Reference" thread for music - similar to the ones elsewhere on the board for Legion and general comics questions, but couldn't find one so... new thread!

Anyway, I have a music question that's been bugging me off and on for about a decade and - for the life of me - I can't find any sort of answer about it on the internet.

The story is this: around about 1996 or 1997 I heard a punk song about Superman (although the song itself might have been from the late '80's). My memory of the song is sort of vague (ergo the difficulty in tracking it down).

I seem to remember that it's a conversation between Clark Kent (who has lost his powers and is no longer Superman) and Jimmy Olsen (who - in this scenario, wound up marrying Lois Lane). In the song, Clark is basically bemoaning his existence, and I seem to recall there is a lyric along the lines of "Clark... have you been drinking again?"

What is this song???

The first song this made me think of was "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" by the Spin Doctors, but Jimmy was clearly the losing party in this particular song. (Kind of an allegory for a guy in love with an unattainable girl who's with a guy you can't compete with.)

Otherwise, this doesn't sound familiar. Sorry, Ex. shrug

Still "Lardy" to my friends!

I tried Googling "Clark, have you been drinking again?" but came up with nothing relating to a song. Sorry, Ex.

No worries, Fanfie... like I say, I've tried quite a few different google searches over the years - all to no avail.

And yeah, Lardy - although "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" has sort of the inversion of the theme, the song I'm thinking of isn't as "pop" as the Spin Doctors... it's definitely more latter-day punk. The stuff I was listening to back then were bands like Bad Religion, NOFX, Jawbreaker, Nation of Ulysses, etc.

I'm starting to think that it actually might have been a really obscure band or something... like just a non-label thing that found its way onto a compilation. It just drives me batty (about once every two or three years when I think of it) because I remember thinking it was a clever song.

Probably not the song you're thinking of, Ex, but here's a punk "Superman" song by Goldfinger in the '90s:

A site that might help you narrow down your search is here. I looked up songs by The Kinks, Bad Religion, and REM, but none match your description.

Well there is Superman by Stereophonics.
The lyrics kinda fit, but the song is too new.

I tried a few without luck either.

Holy crap!!! Over two years later and I just randomly happened across the song I was trying to find!!!

Doing a completely unrelated search (I was looking for a "Doctor Fate" related song for my podcast) I rediscovered this song from 1995. It's called "Kal-El" and is by an old punk band called Trusty.

Whew! That was bugging me for like twelve years.
