Wow! That's amazing. I would love to live somewhere that looked like that. Is it easy to get out of the city into the country?

Very nice, Bruno, but don't expect any pics from me until I re-acquire my digital cam! Besides, I used to have the the latitude and longitude in my location, so everyone knew where I lived!

The countryside is litterally just outside the city... You drive for 20 minutes from the centre of the city and you're in the countryside, close to the sea and the mountains are only 40 miles away...

My brother lived in Edinburgh for a year, working in a local bar to support his time in Scotland, and meeting his current girlfriend there (although she was a Pom rather than a Scot). Thanks to his time there and my work at Lonely Planet (I briefed the author of our Edinburgh guidebook on what to update in the maps and had to proof them quite heavily) I've seen and heard a lot about the city; Edinburgh sounds awesome...
I'll gather some pics and let you all see what Melbourne looks like; tried to do it today but couldn't upload them to my image storehouse... Grrrr.

I have got to get to Edinburgh. Jeepers, it's BEAUTIFUL!!!! I'm from South Africa, and I'm living in London at the mo, and I have to say, just seeing the historical buildings is amazing. Though obviously London has nothing on Edinburgh. Hmmmmm... gonna have to plan a trip soon.
I might live on the butt end of the world, but I get to see the days before anyone else.... mwaahahahahahaha

With a name like Pariscub you reckon that Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the world?
Strange.
I guess that having visited it occasionally over the past 30 years I’m kind of immune to a lot of its charms, and since a lot of the ‘old’ architecture isn’t that dis-similar to the architecture up here in Aberdeen (only 120 miles north) it perhaps doesn’t hit the same spots as, say, Paris does.
I guess it’s easier to see beauty and / or things of interest in things that are new to you (e.g. I’ve just come back from Glasgow and saw some gorgeous Charles Rennie MacKintosh buildings that I’d never seen before – pity I didn’t have my camera with me at the time).
It must be the first time ever that I’ve seen photos of Embra without there being the obligatory shot of the castle from Princes Street. Well done for keeping away from the cliché. Showing what it means to you, and not just the tourist spots.
I’ll have to see about getting some good photos of Aberdeen and then find out how to upload them for your pleasure.
And then once that’s been done, a “Your Favourite City” thread might be an idea….
Hic!

As for Paris, well, I lived and worked in Paris for more than 20 years (worked at the Louvre and the Orsay Museum as a matter of fact) and I think Paris is another of those most beautiful cities of Europe, along with Prague. I agree that Glasgow has a few beautiful McIntosh buildings, but I guess I am immune to the charms of that city... Really liked Aberdeen when I went there however. As for Edinburgh, well, I thought everyone knew the mandatory Castle shot, so I wanted to avoid it... hehe

Probably true - since I commute to Glasgow every day, I'm pretty much immunised against it by now (although my aunt's not, even though she works in the city she's always trying to point out loads of architectural stuff every time I see her).

Been to Glasgow twice, 91 and 01, and in 01 found it much more impressive. What little I've seen of Aberdeen, it looks beautiful, too...
But Edinburgh truly is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty.

But Edinburgh truly is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty. I agree. Mind you, here in Scotland, there's a kind of "rivalry" between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Lots of people like one and not the other. Hmmm I guess I would have to show pictures of all the cities where I lived. hehehe... Having lived in three different countries and at least four cities, that makes a lot of pictures hehe

I'm a big fan of Edinburgh and never been there. Got turned on to it after I noticed so many writers and artists I like come from there. MUST be a special place.
It created Sherlock Holmes and Peter Pan!

As crazy as it sounds but that is one of the main reasons I wanna go. Pan, Potter, Holmes, and many others! I hear it's pretty artsy and I am artsy fartsy.
