Pick a Legionnaire (or other major character) and speculate on what the Legionverse would be like had they never existed.

[An extended riff on Dawnstar's absence, now taken to this thread on the same theme in the Bits section.]

What if Kid Quantum had never joined the preboot Legion? We might never have had the no-artificial-power rule.

What if Cos never joined?
Lyddia would have been a shy shrewish library type! Garth would have never shot down that Khundian fleet and saved those Space Police Officers! RJ would be mean and cruel and buy up Earth—and probably make it Brande-ville. Why, if Cos could see it, he’d probably punch Dirk in the teeth and got shot at by Gim!
Ayla would probably be a hysterical mess without Cos to knock some sense into her!
*Sniff*
It would take the work of an angel, probably one who looked like Polar Boy, to finally make him see that, *choke*, no man who has friends is a loser.
What a hero!

Given the teamwork shown by Rokk, Garth, and Imra in saving RJ Brande right at the outset of the Legion's history, it's interesting to speculate that if any one of the founders had not been present (especially Saturn Girl), the assassination of Brande would have succeeded, and the Legion would never have gotten started.

What if RJ Brande never existed?
Rokk would have found work (or continued his magnoball career, postboot), Imra would be a disgruntled Sci-Cop, and Garth would have eventually found Mekt and gotten fried. And there would be no Legion.
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

What if Brainiac 5 had never existed? I think they wouldn't have all the cool gadgets. More importantly, the Legion might not have ever gone back in time to recruit Superboy and Supergirl. And then there's Lu - she'd never have lost one of her bodies at the hands of Computo.

There actually was a parody story called "It's a Wonderful Legion!" based around the idea of Brainiac 5 never existing... But it is an interesting question, and that story didn't actually do anything to explore it... If Brainiac 5 never existed post-Zero Hour, the Legion would have been blown up by Mano on the moon. Short series!

Or the others may have banded together to "prevent anything like that from happening again", which could lead to a Legion with a different tone and modus operandi.

Dude. [/b]That actually sounds like an interesting concept. Some writer should pitch it as an Elseworlds.

It's a *frightening* concept. It'd have the potential to go bad so fast...

That's why I'd only want it as an Elseworlds, as opposed to a new spin on the Legion.
