It does help to know that, but it runs into the danger of some people having a red flag come up with anything new that's described as "mandatory." As I said, that may be my own foible -- but I doubt I'm the only one. And, unfortunately, a word like that can make some of us assume that, with it, you've put on your ModeratorHat (see below).

Many of us, including me, may have misjudged the situation. I'm sorry about that. I had thought that you already knew that this was the case, and had been from the beginning, with both you and Scott.

We advisors knew it wasn't true for us, because there isn't much we're called upon to do (at least for now). It seems that you hadn't realized it until now for yourself. With all the details of setting this place up and then defending it from hardware glitches and spider marauders, that's understandable!

It all comes with the moderator/owner/founder territory, amigo. I've been in many such mod, etc., situations over two Net decades. If you're immersed in tweaking the details -- and indeed you are, as I am at Pteraphiles -- the mod role and the one-of-us role have to be clearly separated.

I don't know whether you'd want to separate them with two personas on these boards, though that'd be quite easy to do. You may not want to dilute your post count, among other things.

I'll give you an idea of what I do at my Yahoo! Groups, either as owner or moderator:

~ If it's a message that is clearly and entirely about matters of Yahoo! changes, Group policy, or new Group mechanics, I make that obvious in the title and at the beginning of my posting, and I almost always sign "Yr hmbl Group owner and mod" or something similar after my moniker.

~ If it's been mixed with substantive points in discussion -- this happens, rarely, in other Groups, not Pteraphiles as yet -- I use these pseudo-tags to set off what may be relating to an "official" matter:

{/ModeratorHat OFF}

Call them extended text-gremlins, if you wish, but they do help.

And by the way, as to "those damn gremlins," as I put it above: I wasn't being critical of your animated artwork as such, not at all. I was just showing my own frustration at not getting the hang of how those smilies are being used to represent, well, other smilies and emotional shortcuts.

I'm slow to learn these things. Maybe those same 20 years on the Net are showing, and slowing me down. It took me years to get used to smilies *sigh*

Thanks, Grey. Let me apologize. My comments came during a time when we are experiencing some new problems with our server. While trying to figure out solutions that I can do on my end, I responded to your comments here. Not exactly a good frame of mind. Quite franky, I'm debating on whether I want to edit some of them out or not. I'm also experiencing some personal and professional stress right now too, which isn't helping either.

I would really like to just be one of the gang here and not have to worry about how what I say may be interpreted as "official." Maybe I should start posting as my alt ID? 98% of the time I just like to post something silly and nonsensical. I'll need to give this some thought.

As far as the graemlins go, I knew you were not attacking me personally in any way so don't worry about that.

Now I need to figure out why some of us are having problems signing on...

Uh oh. Sounds like I'm going to need an alternate ID to be the authoritative and insightful one, as I, the often silly and nonsensical Omniforous one, am also a Moderator/Advisor type person. I will need to be taken seriously after all.

If something I said made you think thatI personallyhave any problem with the Leader elections, than I apologize. Actually, I think that this would be an EXCELLENT idea. However, I would reverse the ID's. You have put a lot of time, effort, and love, into your Nightcrawler ID and should keep that. Also, it is how most of us recognize you. (I can't keep straight which one is Gary and which one is Scott )

I would recommend creating an "official" Alt. ID that you and LL could share. Something else else with an official sounding name that invokes a sence of authority (RJ Brande, Chief Zendak, Mordu the Merciles, etc.) That way, when this poster shows up (which will hopefully be required only rarely) it will serve notice to all as a sort of "Your attention please! The following is an important Official LWMB announcment!"

Wow! Scott and I discussed this when we were first setting up. It was going to be R.J. Brande and he was going to be member #1. Obviously, we opted to do things they way we did, but maybe...

Personally, I don't think that's necessary, Nighty. There is no reason why you should have to jump through unnecessary hoops to just be one of the gang around here. Instead of bouncing between IDs, why not use the Science Police Headquarters section to post any changes in LW policy. And then anything you say in the other boards can be assumed to be in jest. Or you could flag the post somehow if you feel you need to be official within the thread.

In any case, I don't think it's all that difficult to figure out when you are being official and when you aren't. You work hard enough around here without having to go above and beyond just to show a few people when you are being serious and when you aren't.
