when you see a photo of a comic CREATOR [ writer / artist ] are they ever a let down for you ???
did you expect them to look different ??? even a bit like one of their creations [ in the case of an artist, of course ??? ]
which ones surprised you the most ????
for me Keith Giffen was nothing like i imagined him to be !!!
also recently Todd Nauck, was a surprise !!! i really thought he'd look like SUPERBOY or ROBIN from "Young Justice" or at least have hair like them !!!!
Matthew.

oh yeah !!
George Perez was a surprise all those years ago, when i saw him !!
hardly any artists reflect themselves in their work IMO !!
i wonder what ED BENES looks like ??? with him, i think he'd look like one of his male characters, but i bet he doesn't ???
anyone seen him .....
Matthew.

I'm disappointed by LOTS of pictures!
Like, I'll see a picture of someone and I'll be all like "They are just SCREAMING for a makeover, the poor dear!" or I'll be all "What are they wearing THAT for??"
Y'know? *questioning coo*

I know I've seen photos of a couple of creators, and seen a few more in person at cons, but I can't quite summon up what anyone looks like at the moment (other than the guys who are featured in the Queer Eye thread over on Dr. Gym'lls...).
Often, when I see a photo of someone I've "known" for a while through their work, it's a bit of a disappointment only in the sense that they rarely look like what I think they'll look like (not because they "look bad"). So the disappointment is really derivative only of the fact that this image I may have had in my mind for so long has to be modified into something new, and different.

What can be even more surprising than photos is meeting creators in person. Then you've got a voice, mannerisms, and wardrobe to go along with the face that you never expected.
Marv Wolfman, sans beard, looks and sounds like Woody Allen. I'm not making this up.
Steve Englehart has a deep voice and blonde-grey hair and beard. He looks the least like a comic book writer of those I've seen.
Len Wien had a scraggly beard and wore a safari hat with sunglasses perched on top. He looked like he'd just stepped out of a "Crocodile Dundee" movie.
Mark Waid has blonde hair, glasses and a cherubic face. I would have thought he was a car salesman.
Terry Moore is very skinny and rather short, but also has the nicest smile of any creator I've met. The man defines "humble" in a positive sense.

I saw this thread and couldn't resist posting a link to the photos of our trip to HEROES-CON this past year. As you can see Tony and I had a pretty good time. And while we're on the subject the hottest woman in comics in my humble opinion: Colorist Trish Mulvihill. http://www.jollyrogerstudio.com/images/galleries/hero/index.html

It's only a bit disappointing to me when I hold in my mind the image of what certain creators looked like when I was young and seeing them now when they're older (and usually with a lot less hair) - makes me feel old too.

Hmmm, we trust our favorite hobby to people that drink beer out of fluted glasses? Must be a coastal thing. Nice tunes though. Really nice tunes. [He Who Wanders] {[...] Terry Moore is very skinny and rather short, but also has the nicest smile of any creator I've met. The man defines "humble" in a positive sense. }
The MAN?! I've gone for ten years thinking this was a woman?! Boy, do I need a reality check! Or a subscription to Wizard, I guess. (Donations taken through PayPal.)
As for the "Companion," Glen Cadigan described to me some of the extreme efforts he went through to merely find some of these people, let alone get them to stay on the phone and then to have transcripts returned from them. Given those trials, I think we're lucky to have any photos of some of the interviewees. Besides, his first illustration priority was the artwork.
Jim Janes, who wasn't pictured and whom I met last year in person, is an affable '70s-ish surfer dude in looks who has a very Noo Yawk accent, and isn't that cognitive dissonance!

i'm gonna change this topics title [ a little !! ]
i think "let down" sounds a bit negative !!! and i didn't intend for the topic to be read in that way !!!
it's more like, have you been "surprised" when you have finally seen a photo of them !!! because we have pictures of people in our minds before, we actually know what they look like .....
does that sound better ???
i hope so !!!
Matthew.

Moore has written in his Strangers In Paradise lettercols that fans are often surprised that he's a he. Part of it is due to the name Terry being common for both genders, but also due to disbelief that a man can write and draw believable female characters.

I'm not sure if I've ever been disappointed (sorry, surprised) by any photos but I have been shocked.
I still cannot believe Alex Ross is younger than I am!

i always thought most creators looked like Peter David, so i didn't care much to think what they looked like. Then I saw a picture of Geoff Johns-WOW! he is cute!
So i haven't been dissappointed.

I always imagined that Curt Swan was tall, broad shouldered and square jawed. I identified him with his characters.

I was surprised by a photo of Colleen Doran. For some reason (????) I figure comics creators are geeky guys with beards and the females are geeky without beards. In the picture I saw, she was in a sparkly evening gown, with long red hair and very pretty.
Two who didn't surprise me are Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore. They look like they were cast by Hollywood for the books they write.

FC, I agree about Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore. Gaiman pretty much looks exactly like Dream from Sandman, which is amusing to me. Alan Moore, who I've heard is the ultimate gentleman in person, looks exactly like an evil wizard/crazed hermit/Charles Manson type person, which is even more fitting! And I agree, Colleen Doran looks absolutely beautiful! Todd MacFarlane seems to be a good looking guy, although it's hard for me to judge what other guys look like. I've heard Trish Mulville is quite the hottie though !
