Yesterday Jen and I went to Whitby for the day. We needed to kill time as her son was on Teesside doing an ice hockey referees course and there was nothing to do at the rink for 12 hours.

So we drove down the coast to spend a day at the home of Dracula ~(as the tourist board like to tell you) What we hadn’t noticed was that this weekend was Whitby Goth Weekend. The whole of the village was full of Goths and Dracula fans in costume, along with pirates Star Wars troopers and even Ghostbusters and all sorts of fun. I told Jen it was just like being at a comic con.

WE had a great time just walking through the small cobbled streets looking in the antique shops and then just generally people watching.

We had fish and chips near the harbour, visited Captain Cooks house, mooched around second hand bookshops and took a walk out along the pier.

Then we took a ride on a steam driven bus which was fun and saw the Goth dogs being walked along the harbour front.

WE had a great day and took a chance to have a beer in a lovely little real ale pub which was packed with a hen party.

One of the things that did surprise me was the ages of the Goths as many, if now most of them seemed my age if not older and the number of families involved . It was not just the teenager angst ridden misfits.

After the trip to Whitby we went up the coast to Saltburn and took a ride on a water powered Victorian Cliff tramway.

Then called back to the rink and met a friend from work for a few beers (Jennifer offered to drive bless her) and got back home about 9.00.

Only regret was that I forgot to take my camera so no pics I’m afraid.

sounds like fun!

is this tied to Halloween in any way, or just a coincidence?

I don’t think its really got anything to do with Halloween Sean, its popularity is more to do with Whitby's role in the Dracula mythos I think.

Apparently they do this twice a year, once at Easter and once in October. And they have their own website and everything.

WGW

I was truly impressed at the time effort put into looking like this.

That's pretty cool, Darden! It must have been kind of odd when you started seeing them all before you realized what was going on.

This sounds like a cool place to visit!

It did sound like a lovely day.

One of the things I like is seeing lots of people walking around in costume.

there's been a lot here lately. being a university area, and then the city's Mardi Gras festivities this past weekend.
