i finished that darn Masters at UCLA !!!
i ended up doing my masters thesis on comics ... which was the only thing i really wanted to do (well, one of a small, equally bizarre set) ... so i was offline these past several months finishing up

in june, after graduation, i packed my things and drove cross country (WITHOUT A/C!!?!?!?!) to fort lauderdale (about 30 miles northwest of miami), got an apartment and am in the midst of a job search

now that's done!
and i'm glad to be back online and at one my favorite websites ... and of course i'll be developing some polls soon

what was the masters in and why the exodus from los angeles? despite no a/c

MA = theater education
(basically i took a ton of directing, playwriting, performance history & theory classes but still wanted to do my own thing about a different idea of authorship & criticism in mixed media art using comics and depictions of AIDS as the primary lenses)

and i had to get out of LA ... between the bizarro encounters (romantic, personal & professional) and LAPD's extraordinary ability to target little old me, i got a little too in-touch with my capacity for violence

and i wanted to go back to the east coast anyway - lived in NYC for most of the 1990s and love tropical heat, so south florida seemed a good compromise - just tried LA to see if i wanted to work in tv/film, and it's not really my thing

glad to see the site thriving ... u know i'm gonna be lurking about and mad-responding cuz i've missed MONTHS of legion talk

i do like la la land. but ive been here four years. liked santa monica but not as much as i thought (lived there 2 years). moved to westwood hated hated hated it. so bland.

but i just moved in feb to west hollywood/hollywood i like it much better, see my friends a lot more. the entertainment scene seems like it can be super annoying but i dont have many friends in that business so that hasnt been my experience of la.

la has got me to like sunny weather and i love tropical places now too.

the lapd do have a great reputation to hold up.

South Florida is my old stomping grounds during my college days. Just the mention of Lauderdale (there is no "Fort" in "Fort Lauderdale" btw) brings back lots of great memories. It has changed a great deal since then but every time I've been there, it's still a good time.

hey andy your thesis sounds interesting, did you find a lot material did you have to show comics treatment of aids? i go to usc right now, my last year starts next week. i can not wait to be done. you must be so relieved.

Hi, nice to meet you. I've only been on Legion World about three weeks. I live in South Florida, too, but after 15 years (my parents and I moved here while I was still in high school,) I'm ready for a change. I'm not sure yet where I'm going, though.

the vast majority of the people here are kooky, smart, funny, extraordinarily fun and just a touch strange -- a lot of laughing can occur

as for your next destination? i've lived in oakland/san fran, los angeles, nyc, bangkok, saigon and now miami/ft lauderdale ... obviously i prefer coasts & cities ... that's how i choose

yeah, the girls are hot in saigon (where the boys, unfortunately, are not for the most part, IMO) ... but they don't seem to get the whole "I'm gay" thing, they just want marriage

just went out to the bars here in South Beach/Downtown Miami for the 1st time this past weekend with a visiting buddy ... the kids are much younger (or else i got older) and far less interesting (or else i got older) but it was still nice to get some attention

alas, don't know how often i'll be repeating the experience (though i have a motley crue of folks coming in this weekend for those damn VMAs...)
