Five days without the Internet. Yes, the rains you've been hearing about had a direct effect on this Angeleno: A "wet cable" kept me offline since last Friday night. Damn Verizon.

(No local land-line phone service. I have a cell phone, but I have to drive a mile and a half for any decent coverage, as I'm near where all the power lines are placed, the Los Angeles River. Damn NIMBYs.)

Does everyone who gets cut off like this from the Net go this electronically stir-crazy? Yes, the cable TV worked (and I'm checking costs for Comcast Digital Phone and Cable Internet service). But even that's no good when the power goes out, as well, as it did last night, gilding the lily. Damn SoCal Edison.

No mud in my basement, no sliding down a hill, just being cut off. I had the jitters of Netless frustration. Couldn't even catch a movie schedule. (The type in the paper is too small. Damn L.A. Times.) On the other hand, I'm sure none of you noticed, so you didn't know you had a break from me {g}

So to paraphrase Henry Higgins, "Damn, damn, damn, damn. ... I've grown accustomed to this place."

I was getting a little worried about you, and the rest of our SoCal buddies. Glad you're back Grey!

Well, Greybird, I am glad lack of internet was the only harm you suffered.

I do know how hooked we become to the sites we visit.

Grey! I was wondering where you were. frown

Damn, damn, damn, we're pretty accustomed to you, too... wink

I had to unmark the Promethea thread in GYM'LL, but am interested in your thoughts, if you had a chance to pick it up with all the inclement weather.

Glad to hear your safe Grey, but that does suck! It's funny when we're reminded about just how much we're addicted to this hobby...

And you know we've grown accustomed to you laugh This place isn't the same without ya!

Aye. I know I did when my computer blew up awhile back. Drove me nuts. You take the Net so for granted when it's there, but once it's gone it's like you're suddenly missing a limb or something. Terrible. Got a little better after awhile, but I just wasn't right until I finally got back online last summer.

Well, that's good news anyway. Glad the homestead is safe and sound Steve!

I can certainly relate Grey! Went through it last fall with the loss of power due to the series of hurricanes here. Glad to hear that you're okay and suffered no physical damage.

Glad you made it back Grey. I did notice your absense and hoped it wasn't something serious.

Nice to be missed ... gracias amigos y amigas.

I got a lot of saved digital art re-filed and backed up. 4,500 winged-humanoid artworks and counting. (These obsessions pile up, don't they?)

Verizon has a beachhead in a few L.A. suburbs from having bought GTE a few years back. I've heard SBC, once Pacific Bell, all around me, ain't much better {sigh}

Gotta go dry out the trunk of my classic '66 Ford, since they didn't waterproof things perfectly in Detroit back then! (And only one carport.)

The rain has been a pain and I'm glad your ok, Greybird.

But I'm still pissed about that poor tiger, the PETA in me is coming out.

5 days *IS* a lOOOOng time to be without the internet for web-heads like us, and I know Grey is a web-head from BEFORE it was a household thing.

Unless I were ill or something, I'd likely go bananas for sure.

I remember when my power was out after the big storm here a couple of summers ago, I did without for 2 days before the boredom (plus lack of air-conditioner) drove me to my Mom's (and her faboo cable computer)!

I live in Tampa, FL. This past summer the hurricans (all 4 of them!) knocked me out power for a week each time. thankfully it was the first and third...but man things like the internet, tv, LIGHT, microwave, we really take for granted.

It gets really dark at night when there are no lights anywhere for blocks. wink What the hell did they do before electricity? I love to read...but it's freaking dark as hell even with a candle!!!

Glad you survived man. No net makes me mad as well. smile

Glad to hear you made it through, GB.

I tend to take myself off the Net for extended periods for various reasons, so I know I can go without it. But to have it taken from me would be different.

I only lost power for 2 of the four (and only lost our roof in one!), but I can sympathize.

We compensated with LOTS of candles! Our major downside with candles was the cat found them fascinating. :-)
