..More than I can say for me...then again I live in the middle of nowhere and my mom and dad never take me and my brother anywhere 'cause we argue all the time...And he kicked my knee and moved the kneecap (I seriously felt it move, hurt as all levels of Hell) a while back and how it pops and hurts.
My dad was somewhat annoyed (not much mind you, just enough to comment) with the only appearance of Matter Eater Lad. He says: "Yeah, tell the kids to stick just about anything in their mouths, not like parents are tellin' them not to." I pointed out that some kids wind up chewing on whatever anyway so it really doesn't matter.
*giggles* I know you weren't trying to be funny, and it isn't REALLY all that funny but still...

I've spent a lot of time working at Los Alamos National Labs. For those that don't know LANL is one of the three top laboratories run by the US government. The lab, in the middle of nowhere, now has a town next to it where many of the workers live. I am amazed at the elementary and middle school kids there. They would have no problems with a cartoon father experimenting on his son, they can already quote procedure and protocol. These kids spend their lunches tearing apart Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galatica because the shows don't get the physics of space correct. A few of these kids give me hope that the US ed-u-ma-ca-tion system won't destroy everyone being driven through its maw.

I take pride in my mental instability.

Copycat Girl - You said you're about 13 right? So the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon is a little before your time. I've only seen bits and pieces, though, so I'm not the best source about it.

On the subject of the...well...subject -
Parents these days are way overprotective. I remember when I was little and it was perfectly normal to see violence and slight sexual undertones in a cartoon. Nowadays if any kids are too sensitive to such things as a little violence and some skin showing it's all their parents' faults.

yah I'm 13. and yah my parents are WAY over protective of me. they think scooters, skateboards, and trampolines are WAY too dangerous for us. my mom also won't let us go anywhere in a store by ourselves. *rolls eyes* life is way too boring with OP. parents.

I think it's gonna depend on the set of parents, every time, because every parent has their own idea about how to raise up a child and what they're exposed to. When I was younger, my parents wouldn't allow my brother and I to watch anything that had too much magic in it (I was raised in a conservative Christian household). Also, too much violence was a big no-no. So I went through my childhood without really seeing much of G.I. Joe, Thundercats, He-Man, She-Ra... Eh, there was a lot of stuff. Somehow, Transformers was alright, but I think it was because that was about giant robots shooting at each and not people. Granted, restrictions in my youth didn't stop me from watching this stuff later. But not like my parents care now... I'm 28 and I can easily tell reality from fantasy.

On the other hand, I can't count the number of times that I or one of the others on management staff at a threatre I used to work at would get into it with a parent because we wouldn't let little 12 year old Jimmy into a hyper-violent movie by himself. Some parents are fine with exposing their kids to a lot of things, others are more guarded.

Talks about Transformers too much. Likes robots with plenty of bling, er big guns!

Yeah, it does depend on the parents. I'm raised in a Baptist Christian house, yet I'm athiest and my mom loves Harry Potter...Dad doesn't really care mich for reading in general and isn't too fond of the movies. Says something about shamelessly risking kids' lives and telling them to go chace psycho killers, he's the more paranoid and (ironically) the one who lets me do the more fun stuff. I told him I was gonna climb a radio tower he put up, he's into ham radio, and he just told me it was about 50 feet tall.

But they're also more paranoid because I'm a girl and most sexual harrassment, and things like that, are targeted towards young girls. And they were against showing me anything where a woman had ungodly strength (didn't stop me from watching Superfriends, which was rerunning at the time, and later Justice League and other shows like that with women fighting better than the men) because they felt that it would give me ideas. My mom didn't want me watching "Matilda" when I was little because she figured it would give me ideas, since I was her smart child (which is funny because the only other child she has is 1 day away from being exactly 2 years older than me) and I could think clearly about things like what I saw in movies.

But now they're a lot less strict, then again I live in the middle of nowhere and nothing ever happens here, and my dad's even OK that I have a boyfriend. If you show your parents you can handle yourself fine, and can fight back if someone attacks you, they start to loosen up bit by bit. smile

exactly. Recently, this boy at my school asked me to the school dance. problem is, everyone hates him. Ever since he asked me, I've heard tons of rumors about him being a sexual harrasser and a pervert. so, of course, my parents are paranoid. right before the dance, my mom made sure I knew what to do if he touched me inappropirately. kick/slap him, run away, and find a teacher. *rolls eyes* the guy was so afraid he would do something wrong, he would barely talk to me, thinking he'd say something wrong and I'd leave him.

Aw, I knew someone like that in 6th grade. He had failed twice and kept asking me out. Of course I politely told him that I wasn't planning on dating until I turned thirteen, no special reason behind that. And once we wound up at a school dance together but I kinda avoided him because he was more annoying than nervous...Wasn't I a nice person? lol

he's actually really sweet and very nice. by the end of the dance, we were holding hands and hugging. we also slow danced 5 times. he even requested "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt to play and coincidentally, it was the very last song. the lights were all coming on and we were some of the last ones in there. it was so like all those slow dances in tv shows and movies I was almost giggleing. then my friends wanted to take a picture with their camera phone so we had to dance real close so they could get the picture.

That is sweet, but don't judge a guy on one date. My ex was really sweet to me when we started dating but he was mocking my friends, calling one of my best friends a whore because he had heard she wasn't a virgin (he didn't know that she was raped), then started spreading rumors about me when I told him I didn't wanna make out. So now half of a charter school (not public and not private, hard to explain) thinks I'm a whore.

But my boyfriend now really is sweet, he's really shy and I'm actually his first girlfriend. I actually had to make a move on him and play him into asking me out because he's so shy. I remember I jumped him saying "Hi" at one point and he went all pale and looked like he was gonna scream, but he was just worried about his burger...Silly Kyle. ^_^ He ate it anyway, which was kinda gross since he dropped it on someone's driveway...
