As I've been catching up on the latest Legion issues one thing that stuck out was in #13, Yildray's art looked absolutely stunning--more than usual, even! The reason? Artist Jonathan Glapion on inks, who always does a fantastic job, finally gave Yildray's pencils the chance to pop like they should!

Glapion has been on a lot of different DC comics and independents lately (Haunt by Image sticks out) and he has a style I really like, which is very detailed and has a sharpness that makes them explosive.

We've seen Yildray's untouched pencils and they've always looked so much better than when they're inked. Until now. if only Glapion or another talented inker had done all his issues, I think the series could have really benefitted from it.

I'm not 100% in love with Cinar's work, but, really, the last time I was in love with a Legion artist's work, it was Lightle, and Cinar and early Manapul (whose art, IMO, fell apart terribly towards the end of the run, and I wonder how much of that was Shooter butting in with his 'make Gazelle look less alien!' nonsense...) are the best artists I've seen since then, with the exception of Jiminez, who hasn't really gotten to do a Legion story, just the Academy stuff in Adventure.

Really, I think the thing I like least about Cinar's work is the Frank-designed costumes he got stuck with. Tyroc looks great, by comparison. (On the other hand, that's not the best example, since just about *anything* would be an improvement on Tyroc's last costume.)

People on the DCU boards are vicious to the creators, and have nothing but nasty things to say about Cinar's artwork, and how thrilled they are that he's being replaced.

There are comic book artists whose work I feel has ruined potentially powerful stories, but it feels like, on the internet, one 'gets points' by being over-the-top vitriolic about such opinions, instead of simply stating, 'yeah, I don't like X's art.'

I agree regarding the inks in #13. I've enjoyed the art overall in the current series. Cinar has been more dynamic. Portela is always easy on the eyes. The coloring on the series has also been top notch.

I agree, issue 13 was the BEST his art has translated yet to the finished comic page.

He is inking himself on FIRESTORM and what he has posted looks very nice!

Yeah, pretty much.

There are some rushed moments here and there, but mostly I've liked both artists very much. Nice composition, good sense of motion and gesture, etc.

I also like Portella and hope he gets a steady, excellent inker like Glapion. There are a ton of them out there still, but being a fantastic inker is kind of a becoming a lost art.

I just couldn't get over how Glapion's inks over Yildiray's pencils gave the title a very explosive feel--like a combo of 80's Giffen with some Jim Lee / Marc Silvestri early 90's (but without their bad qualities).

Portela often inks himself (I think digitally in fact). So there will probably be no inker attached. I might be wrong though.
