Calamity King sounds like Elvis.
Nemesis Kid's a jerk (big surprise, eh?) but he's cool to KK at the end.
I missed Comet Queen but have it on tape and will certainly rewind to look for her and others. This is where WaK missed the boat in re-introing long-unseen faves to get fans buzzing. Calamity King ruled!! And I appreciated Nem Kid's gesture at the end... it could make his eventual betrayal all the worse. Or... will they take the enexpected route and keep him as a good guy? I almost can't imagine this, considering the setup. It's like it's perfect for the season finale, when Nem Kid neutralizes Supes at a pivitol moment and K-Kid takes him down.

I was really disappointed with this version of Karate Kid, as I was expecting an interpretation more like the classic KK (all over the place now in LS and Countdown) or the WaK KK. Instead we get a KK who looks about as on par with Ralph Macchioo from the '80's movie instead of KK who can go par-to-par with Batman. Maybe they downplayed KK's abilities to keep him more distinct from Timber Wolf.
I also found his "solution" catch-phrase rather annoying in how often it was repeated. The whole KK part of the episode reminded too much first-season Super Friends ep (Wendy/Marvin) where each episode had to have an uplifting heavy-handed message.
Cosmic Boy is becoming all but unsufferable, although I wonder if the producers here are doing this intentionally and building a story arc around it? Like someone else said here, I've pretty well lost respect for Cosmic Boy as leader - mainly because of his rub-your-face-in-it attitude. So has it been officially stated yet this season that Cos is current leader?
Is it just speculation, or do we have some evidence that the focus groups are the cause of the lack of girls this season? Cuz I sure want to see Shadow Lass show up!
Good things about the episode - the tryout scene
more Dream Girl and Vi cameos
Element Lad - when did he bulk up so?
Tyroc - ironic that he's been mute in all his appearances so far
the Wildfire insignia - hopefully that was intentionally put there and not just because it was a cool looking insignia. Isn't Dawnstar scheduled to appear later this season? Maybe we'll get a Wildfire and Legion Academy story out of it.
Nemesis Kid - they just have to building an arc here where he betrays the team to Imperiex.

Oh forgot this before hitting send -
On the team being stretched thin, since they went back for Superman why not go back for someone else?
Do the producers have the rights to use Supergirl? I think that would be so cool to see the super cousins in action in one episode, and Kara might be the character high profile enough to break the no girls theme this season.

once again another good episode.
and Cos. wow. if he were in a 3 Stooges skit, he would be due for a pie in the face.
liked Karate Kid and Nemesis Kid. when I saw power neutralizer gun, I instantly thought he was working with the bad guys.
enjoyed the tryouts. to bad they couldn't show more people.

Well, this episode was no "Chained Lightning," but a really good episode nonetheless.
I was hoping they wouldn't go with an Asian accent for Karate Kid, but it didn't annoy me too much. I really liked it when he kicked Grimbor's ass(who was a really cool villain, by the way)and he and Chameleon Boy make a great team.
Speaking of Cham, I'm liking him more and more by the episode. He actually does make me laugh and is smart, too. If only somebody on the show would call him CB3.
As for CB1, he should just go away. Now. And the first battle scene did seem a little sloppy, it's like they weren't even trying. It also sucks that we didn't get to see more Legion rejects.
Oh, and one more thing. When KK was swinging that cleaning-the-floors thing(or whatever it was called) around, was anyone else thinking "Wax on, wax off?"

Guys, I'm going to have to stick up for Cosmic Boy here, at least from a writing standpoint. In both the episode involving Timber Wolf and this one, we NEEDED someone riding the characters' ass. That's what creates conflict in stories like this, and there's not really much to do in either of these stories if there isn't conflict like this to drive the characters affected and make them go against the odds. Cos was characterized in his first appearance as more rigid and overly focused, so in the case of his appearances this season, they fit the mythos as presented so far.
There's the larger story to look at for each episode, and characters have to play necessary roles accordingly. And not all of them end up sunny and nice.

Good point Raz. We need an episode where we get to see that Rokk's as human as everyone else and that he pushes the others so hard because _____________ (fill in the blank) I liked him being chummy with Nemesis Kid (the Snark Squad).
Wierd how Superman and Chameleon Boy walked away from the group while NK was being sworn in though.

Well, they had a job to do.
And I'm not sure Cosmic Boy is snarky. He's just a royal hard ass. He's not doing this to be cruel, and when he did that "what have we learned today?" bit, he was trying to have is point proven.

If the screen where Superman says their ranks have been thinned is to be believed then Chemical King, Ultra Boy, Wildfire, Invisible Kid, and Quislet have joined in the missing year or two along with Cham. (Of course there's two Star Boys as well.)

Shadow Lass (for her alienness and easy to animate powers) and Princess Projectra (for her girl demographic and toy tie-in possibilities) are the two females that surprise me the most by not even being in the background.

Well, Nightcrawler, it doesn't look like Princess Projectra will appear since Saturn Girl pretty much has the same power(they might decide to show her anyway, but I'm just saying). But I have a feeling they're saving Shadow Lass for something big(Please, please, please let that be the case. If this series ends without Shadow Lass appearing, then I'm going to be pissed).
As for what Razorsaw posted, I guess Cosmic Boy's characterization does make sense when you look at it from that perspective, but that doesn't make it any less annoying.

This week's episode:
Animation: Fantastic! Karate Kid, Grimbor, Nemesis Kid: Fantastic! Male Legionnaires: Great! Plot: Typical. Tryouts: Just one measly scene. Wanted more. Female Legionnaires: Just background decorations. Would it *kill* the cartoon creators to have Dreamy utter one lousy phrase? Would it be so terrible to have the male Legionnaires even mention Saturn Girl's condition and show some affection for her?
All in all: Good episode, of course, but the absence of female Legionnaires is annoying. I hope I don't "sound" like a fault-finding nitpicker,I love the cartoon, but...well, you know!

I never made the marketing connection unit Nightcrawler mentioned it, but the Legion has a character who is a Princess AND a super hero - Disney would just love to be in that situation. It's a marketing no-brainer. Of course brains are in short supply at the CW it seems.
I suspect that if we do get Jeckie on the show, she will probably show up as Sensor Girl. And it better not be as a snake!

No fan of focus-group-driven decisions either, but reflect on this: the intent is to increase ratings points to increase profits from advertisers who in turn demand more shows on which to peddle product which will lead to MORE episodes and that's a GOOD THING, right?

Unfortunately, the LSH31C lettercol pretty much confirms a Jeckie-Snake hybrid of some sort. *wail!!*

Hmm... I wouldn't have a problem with Princess Projectra having a funny-talking-snake sidekick!

A lot of this episode really made sense, from a story-telling point of view. Superman's idea to look for recruits on K-19 is smart. His ready acceptance of Karate Kid also makes sense--presumably this Supes is familiar with the likes of Batman and Green Arrow in his home time period, so he knows what KK is capable of. The setup for the climax made total sense -- ONLY someone without powers could defeat Grimbor. Even if we never see KK again in the cartoon, we know the essentials about his personal story from this episode. Very taut, concentrated storytelling.
It's also not unexpected that the other Legionnaires would be dismissive about a non-powered member. They're jerks here, but, they have a long history of jerkitude in the comics. Nemesis Kid may not yet be revealed as a villain, but he sure is creepy. Cos should watch his back. Finally, Tucker and company show that there are no bad villains, just bad creative teams. Portrayed this way, Grimbor is a perfect foil for a super-team--he focuses on neutralizing his individual opponents. He sort of reminds me of Deathstroke in that respect. Great job rehabilitating a character whose sole purpose seemed to be bondage innuendo when he was created 30+ years ago.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"
