On twitter today @tbwUltraPowers asked the following:

Quote
if and when a new ongoing 'Legion of Super Heroes' series starts ... if the went back to the original numbering, what would it be ???
I calculated it two ways. MYway, as if all regular legion books had been part of one, continuous series, and tbwUPway, counting only the Pre-5YG books, under the assumption that these are the books that would count, since the next series, presumably, will feature the Johnsboot team.

Here's how I dood it.

Starting as if Adventure Comics #300 was actually Legion of Super-Heroes #1, and counting each issue thereafter to cover features the Legion, the conceit being that we are attempting to ascertain a current issue number if DC had published one, continuous Legion title.

This list excludes guest-appearances in non-Legion titles, limited series, reprint series, and back-up series in other titles. It also excludes the various L.E.G.I.O.N. series and the book based on the KidsWB! cartoon.

It does include the Tales of and Legionnaires series (under the assumption that our hypothetical Legion title simply ran semi-monthly at that time) and extraneous reprints inserted into regular series. It also includes such limited series that essentially served as THE Legion title during their runs.

Adventure Comics 300-380 (81 issues)
Superboy 197-230 (34)
Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes 231-258 (28)
Legion of Super-Heroes 259-313 (55)
Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes 314-325 (12)
Legion of Super-Heroes 1-63 (63)
Legion of Super-Heroes 1-125,0,100000 (127)
Legionnaires 1-81,0,1000000 (83)
Legion Lost 1-12 (12)
Legion Worlds 1-6 (6)
The Legion 1-38 (38)
Legion of Super-Heroes 1-15 (15)
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes (21)
Legion of Super-Heroes 37-50 (14)
Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds 1-5 (5)

594 comics

This list includes Annuals and other one-shot books that might just as easily served as an annual when published.

Superboy 147 (1)
Adventure Comics 403 (1)
All-New Collectors' Edition C-55 (1)
Legion of Super-Heroes Annual 1-5 (5)
Legion of Super-Heroes Annual 1-4 (4)
Legion of Super-Heroes Annual 1-7 (7)
Legion of Super-Heroes Secret Files 3003 (1)
Legionnaires Annual 1-3 (3)

23 comics

So, the next Legion book should be #595 with Annual #24. Or, by tbwUltraPowers' reckoning, #274 with Annual #13.

Of course, as always, YMMV. I look forward to your imminent rebuttals. wink

Of course, if we excluded Adventure Comics, because the series will soon revert to its original numbering and continue as companion book to our hypothetical Legion series, we'd have to start #1 with Superboy #197.

THAT, means the next Legion of Super-Heroes series would start with #513 MyWAY, or #193 tbwUPway.

The list is missing the Action run after Adventure. I know that ws a back-up but so were the ealy Adventure issues. Oh and the current Adventure run. Both have to be included in any Legion numbering.

If we are looking at direct continuity then the numbering should stop immediately before Crisis on Infinite Earths #10 not with the 5YL run, so...

Adventure Comics 300-380 (81 issues)
Action Comics 384 - 392 (8)
Superboy 197-230 (34)
Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes 231-258 (28)
Legion of Super-Heroes 259-313 (55)
Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes 314-325 (12)
Legion of Super-Heroes 1-18 (18)
Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds 1-5 (5)
Adventure 504-505 (so far) (2)

Total 243 or 160 without Adventure

Annuals:
Superboy 147 (1)
Adventure Comics 403 (1)
All-New Collectors' Edition C-55 (1)
Legion of Super-Heroes Annual 1-3 (3)
Legion of Super-Heroes Annual 1 (1)

I would also include

Best of DC Digest 24 (1)
Legion of Substitute Heroes Special 1 (1)

Total 9

"Our devotion to each other was unexplainable"
"You were kids"
"No Batman, we were Legion"

a good catch, and by the same reasoning, you'd want to include Superboy numbers 172, 173, 176, 183, 184, 188, 190, 191, & 193, which also contained new Legion features. and as for the Action run, you dropped numbers 378 through 383, so your total should go up by 15.

Personally, I don't care what the numbering is going to be, I want Legion of Super Heroes back.

Wish they could get James Sherman to illustrate with Bob McLeod or Joe Rubinstein on inks. That would rock and roll my world. Hell, if Mike Grell can make a DC come back with writing Warlord (and soon taking over the art chores again) then I can wish for that!! smile
