CALLING THE ROLL is a character-by-character look at the latest issue featuring the 31st super-team, the Legion of Super-Heroes.
Sorry this one was so late. I had it typed up a couple of weeks ago, but a computer glitch in the form of my 12 year old nephew happened!

Anyway, Let the (late) Roll be called!

SensorGirl SENSOR GIRL Why, oh why bring back that mask and headgear? I thought she left that mess back in the barn in Smallville. What reason would she have for wearing it in the 31st century? I suppose there is a reason. Or will be now, if this was an editorial mistake. Was this a gesture between royals? Is she still hiding her identity in the U.P?

'Coup de main'. Has Jeckie been hanging around with Jacques?

Sensor Girl makes the still-under control Brainy and Tyroc think they're hitting Jo and Tinya, while the real Ultra Boy and Phantom... sorry, Goose... Girl are-- well, they're somewhere else. Showing them behind Jeckie, or off to the side or floating above their illusory selves would've made things a little clearer. Or perhaps muddied things up even more.

"The temerity of this commoner to call herself a queen." Routing self-styled monarchially titled villainesses is now Jeckie's own unique little specialty, isn't it? Ya gotta have a gimmick.

Which makes me wonder what Jeckie would be like facing down a bonafide evil queen?

SHADOW LASS Wonder if Dyogene was paying attention. Shady's noticing the potential sentient insect and intuiting about the necessary precision of questioning the ring would seem to make her an ideal candidate for a GL ring. Not that I want her to become Shadow Lantern.

Hmmm. Or do I? Shadow constructs...

ElementLad ELEMENT LAD Love the new look! It'd replace Gim's as my favorite, if it weren't for the pink booties. Ick. I love his hair, here, too.

The way Jan and Kirt's powers combined make Element Lantern a good candidate for Dyogene to consider, too. Though that would be a big misstep for this character, in my opionion.

Seeing the different color signatures used by Jan and Kirt when doing the same thing makes me think color should be incorporated into his power signature more. I kind of miss the little symbols adopted by Element Lad Prime, too. What if a ring of those symbols hovered around one of the loops of the atomic visualization being used for transmutation? Maybe the interlac 'e' on his uniform could change color when appropriate?

INVISIBLE KID Jacques looks great, if a trifle Bumblebee-ish (maybe she's *his* heroic inspiration?). I like the man-hive.

Dyogene DYOGENE: I loved the art in the panel establishing Ozifer's landscape. I would've appreciated it even more if something about the trees or grass was less Terran looking.

What is Dyogene up to? Ozifer itself as GL? (With that name, I half expected the creation of an Emerald City...) Sentient swamp-suckers? Sentient winged insects? Is Dyogene hellbent on making Kirt a GL? Are my half-baked ideas about Shadow Lantern and Element Lantern possible candidates for full baking in a story oven?

If it's a fully-fleshed out corps Dyogene's after, one that's a crowd working in unity, he might look no further than one Luornu Taine. Duplicate Lantern just doesn't have much of a ring( laugh ) to it, though, does it?

Wow, I haven't seen a Calling the Roll with this any Legionnaires getting a mention for some time now. It's almost feeling a bit Legion-y!

I think the flame came from the metal dish thingie, and she must have brought that in her spaceship (which remained off-screen). Even if she's got a flight ring and transsuit, she had to bring a spaceship. It's not like Legion Flight Rings are used for interplanetary spaceflight...

LIGHT LASS Auntie Ayla to the rescue! As an uncle, I'm glad to see the concern she'd be feeling about her nephews isn't forgotten.
Yeah, the interaction between Garth and Ayla was nice here. They didn't act a whole heck of a lot like siblings, in the 'classic' stories, sometimes.

GOOSE GIRL That fairy tale reference is pretty obscure. Is this Tinya now a history buff, like Phantom Girl Prime? The original wasn't. I think it's interesting that she takes 'point' when confronting SQ. Seniority or ticked-off girlfriend?
I like leader-ly Phantom Girl, some I'm gonna go with seniority. smile

Tellus TELLUS There he goes, discounting his skills again. I wonder, were fingers always a part of his design that we didn't see until now? He's shown elsewhere with the familiar club-like arms, which can now be viewed as bearing fingers that are turned under. Much like how a gorilla bears weight.

I wish Tellus had retained some of that air of menace and alienness that he exuded in his 21st century appearances. I thought much was added to his character there, without taking away from his general kindness and sweetness.
He's got great potential. I don't feel that he's ever been used well, and with Blok gone, I'm afraid he's just going to be slotted into Blok's role as wide-eyed clueless observer of the human condition.

Wow, that's a neat observation. If she wasn't being shown all Kirt-adjacent to foreshadow something later between them, that could be quite an interesting development.

Tinya and Jeckie take the lead on resolving the first teams issues, Tasmia does the heavy 'figuring stuff out' that one would expect from a leaderly sort on the second team (and, he says sheepishly, isn't the first character present he'd expect to do so...). Even Ayla could be seen as helping to channel the frustrated Garth.

The girls come out looking pretty good, in this issue.

Who knew he was a fan of Stryper? smile

A whole bunch of interesting observations, here. I like the thoughts about Element Lad having some sort of floating symbols as part of his power-signature, even if that makes him seem more like a mystical alchemist sort, and less like an alien with transmutation powers.

Didn't somebody retcon Cham as a legacy hero at some point? That is: there was a Green Lantern in the 20th/21st Century who had the same surname?

sigh

In general, I think there are too many legacy heroes, and I'm not all that crazy about the GL mythos either. I wonder if they're setting up Cham as the next GL. Really hope not, though I guess it would take care of the duplicate powers issue in the Legion; if that's still considered important.
