So on the day of what would of been the man's 73rd birthday I thought it would be nice for us to share all the joy that the muppets, his other creations, and his company has given us.

Saw "Where the Wild Things Are" tonight with my 7-year old and his best friend. What an amazing accomplishment, and it would not have been possible without the artistry and technology that Henson developed and inspired. I can't help but think that Spike Jonze was inspired by Jim's spirt in the making of this amazing film. It's perfect tribute.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

My wife and I watch "The Muppet's Christmas Carol" every holiday season. The new Jim Carrey "it's-in-3D-so-everything-is-always-moving-*reallyreallyFAST-at-the-screen" version does not look better in any way.

Since chez_cleome got itself a free pie (pumpkin!) from a local cooking demo the other day, my fancies turned lightly to this immortal sketch involving Cookie Monster and pie . Ah, youth!

Kermit: "You know, I may be mistaken, but the bellhops look like rats."
Rolf: "You should see the chambermaids!" Still one of the Top Ten musical numbers in the history of the Western world:
" Happiness Hotel ," from The Great Muppet Caper.

I just added Kermit's "Rainbow Connection" and his duet with Fozzie, "Movin Right Along" to my iPod.
Just spouting off.

I used to fake being sick to stay home from school so I could watch this with my little brother and sister when they were really young--basically did it every year and my Mom kind of winked at it. I still love it to this day! My all-time favorite Jim Henson creations are the two old guys in the balcony who are always grumpy and making fun of everyone. I've always found them so hysterical!

Geezers in balcony: Statler and Waldorf
Rainbow Connection: One of the best songs ever written, PERIOD. Particularly when sung by a frog with banjo.
The Muppet Movie is a classic! "Sparkling Muskatel...one of the finest wines of Idaho. Would you like to smell the bottle cap?"

Looks like they've come down a bit in price.
I haven't been able to work one that I really love, though. I've heard they have more options if you do it in person. I'll have to remember that if I ever make it to New York.

Because icon_uk over on the Dreamwidth boards reminded me: Today would be Jim Henson's 75th birthday!

Just watched 2 episodes of THE MUPPET SHOW this morning. I never got around to taping the show regularly, and every episode I have is on the back-end of some other tape, acting as "filler". So the easiest way to watch these, since they're filed all over the place, is whenever I watch the main thing on a tape, afterwards, watch the stuff after it. Otherwise, there's too much fast-forward searching involved.
The eps. I watched today had Paul Simon and Gladys Knight. I was reminded once again of how dull so many of Simon's songs got after a certain point, and how some of those MIGHT have been infinitely better if Art Garfunkel had sung them instead. The Gladys Knight ep. opened with one of the most bizarre versions of a song I've ever seen on that show, "Night & Day" sung by mummies in an Egyptian tomb. (It's like... what were they smoking???)
The one over-riding thought that crossed my mind was, the sheer overwhelming amount of WORK and craft that went into each episode of this show, to make it look totally CHAOTIC and half-baked. Crazy stuff!

I loved the Muppet Show and Muppet Treasure Island, as well. Those song numbers always got me laughing. Cabin Fever

That is such a great picture .... I never did see it before now!
It's always sad losing someone so talented but he was also waaaaay too young! Plus when throw in how ridiculously easy it would have been to save the man (if doctors who were checking on him had checked for everything (including flu) then he would still be with us today.
That makes it even more sad.
