In case this escaped attention due to Cobie's inane King Kong post... Originally posted by Officer Taylor: Originally posted by Arachne: The more I think about the finale, the less I like it. I think this article covers why pretty well. I just read the article. While it makes a lot of points very fairly, I feel that it generalizes how fans feel about how the show ended too much. Everyone interacts with this show in their own way, I feel. How each fan reacts to how the show turned out differs from fan to fan. Those that were concerned more about having every bit of mysterious minutiae spelled out were bound to be dissappointed.
To me, this show is, was and always will be about the characters and where their lives take them when they come into contact with this weird, mysterious island. As fascinating as those mysteries are, they are window dressings, conflict-stirrers and plot movers that still only served to move these characters forward.
I'm not gonna lie and swear that I didn't give a crap about those mysteries--I most certainly did! But there's always been much more of a focus in this series on getting into the heads of these characters and illuminating their motives, their pasts and their futures. If you didn't give a damn about these characters, all the mysterious happenings in creation wouldn't be enough to keep this series afloat.
I feel the series accomplished what it set out to do with these characters and brought them all to a satisfying conclusion. And, oh yeah, we did get LOTS of answers along the way to those pesky mysteries! And we have lots of reasons to continue revisiting this series in the future and continue debating those mysteries left unsolved and, most importantly, what it all meant. If that means we don't have perfect answers to all our questions, I'm still really happy.
I'm not saying that's how everone should feel, but it's how I feel. The article tends to go too far in its proselytizing, I think.

Interesting...I was reading a Wiki article on Walt (which I had looked up to see what the character's last name was for "Miscasting Classics"), and I found an interesting theory on what Walt's purpose may have been. It's proposed that it was originally Walt, not Desmond, who was supposed to have the electromagnetic powers and serve the role that Desmond eventually served. As Desmond really caught on with fans and Malcolm David Kelley presented large timeline problems with his obvious aging, Darlton modified Desmond's role and pushed Walt aside.
It isn't presented as fact, but it seems pretty compelling, given how Walt had unexplained powers. Food for thought anyway.

Interesting. I kind of assumed that the powers were supposed to imply a potential candidate.

Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

I liked the finale, BUT....
I think there is a legitimate complaint to be made about a lack of answers and/or plot resolutions. I agree the story is ultimately about the characters, and Jack in particular, but the show was presented as a combination of mystery and mythology and that's what drew people to the show and was part of the fabric that that wove the narrative together (the show wouldn't work if you removed these elements and still had the same character arcs).
A number of elements played a major role in the show and even took focus for major portions of various seasons: The Valenzetti Equation, Walt, the nature of the Smoke Monster, the Dharma Intiative, the structure and purpose of the Others, etc. I think a lot of these go beyond just nitpicking, and it is a narrative cheat to leave them on the table at the end.
I'm all for leaving mysteries to discuss, but these aren't David Lynch style mysteries where all the clues are there and the creators leave you to do the heavy lifting, these are mysteries without context or clues (inside the narrative itself anyway, there's actually a lot of "Canon" answers on-line, but that's almost worse).
I don't begrudge people for wanting more out of it.

I certainly think there are things that we probably should've been given more info about.
However, I blame the "Across the Sea" episode for not giving us enough answers, not the finale...

I agree, having over a solid week to think about it. The finale felt close to perfect for me. "Across the Sea" should have delivered a few solid answers to get that out of the way. I'm not saying they needed to spoon feed us the entire history of the island, but some solid answers were appropriate.
I'm definitely more in the 'positive' side of the spectrum in my feelings to the last season, but I will certainly concede the above.

The more I think about it, I would've moved "Across the Sea" earlier in the season, and then gave us more of a "recent history of the island from Jacob's perspective" episode where "Across the Sea" was. We could see such things as the foundation (corruption?) of the Others, the coming of Dharma, etc.

my only fault with the ending / resolution of the series is that i'd planned to go back and re-watch from the beginning ( and although i WILL !! )
watching it all over again ( with hind-sight ) will not really reveal anything more on the mysteries that were played out to us during each season !!
so it's almost like there is no need to re-watch it again ...... as you won't really see anything further ( hope that made sense !!?? )
of course i'm not putting the series down ( i LOVED it !!! ) i'm just a little sad that i can't re-watch it and find out new stuff, or have that moment where you can say to yourself, that's what that means etc ...

I actually DO plan to rewatch this summer and expect to get quite a bit out of it. One, it's always an excellent watch. Two, I suppose I want to see for myself what is left hanging and what feels resolved.

Yeah, I want to go back and see stuff like exactly how the MiB's manipulations of the Losties played out.

i hope people didn't take my post ( the wrong way )
i really will re-watch again ( and will be still entertained and excited ) but i think what i was trying to say ..... was because certain story points were not revealed at the end, which i thought may have been !?
by going back to the beginning and starting again, i had hope to watch certain scenes with 'hindsight' about them, which i won't have now ....
again ... hope that made sense ???
cheers
Matthew.

Makes sense to me. I plan to rewatch, too, and I'm really afraid now that the story won't hold up to seeing it all at once.
I should say that my main problem was with the last season as a whole ore than the finale itself. I hated the purgatory thing, though. (Loved the on-island part.) Imagine if Shakespeare added a scene at the end of Romeo and Juliet where Romeo and Juliet met up in heaven and existed happily ever after. Kind of ruins the impact.
